Rafa Benitez believes midfielder Lucas Leiva has illustrated over our last three fixtures how important he is to Liverpool's future.

With Javier Mascherano suspended, Lucas - who turns 23 today - has been charged with protecting the back four as well as connecting defence with attack.

Benitez said: "Everybody with some idea about football can see that in the last three games, he has been the one controlling midfield and trying to hold the team together.

"We have a lot of players with an offensive mentality, but still Lucas was there in the middle, doing a fantastic job for the team. I was really surprised, then, to hear some people still give him criticism. Our fans have been choosing him as the man of the match, though, and that says everything.

"He is going to be a very important player for us in the future. The lads love him because he trains really well, he is always chatting, always working hard. They know he is a very good professional and a very good lad."

Lucas has played in each of Liverpool's 20 Premier League games so far, as well as the vast majority of Champions League and cup fixtures.

Benitez would like to give the Brazilian a chance to catch his breath sooner rather than later.

"Lucas is improving all the time," said the boss. "But it is obvious that if he has to play every single game, it will be really difficult because our idea is to play him sometimes but also give him a break, as we have Mascherano, Aquilani and Gerrard.

"But circumstances have meant that he has played almost every game. If we can manage the situation and we have some more players back, it will do him good if we can give him a break. It is hard to play so many games.

"If he gets that break, he will come back even better. I know he can improve so much more. When I was talking about him before he signed, I was telling people that we were signing the captain of Gremio - and he was only 19.

"That means something. You do not captain teams in Brazil at such a level at that age if you are not a strong character or someone with a very good mentality. Hopefully he will continue to grow with us."

From ESPN Soccernet's lighthearted predictions for the year ahead:

"Shock England call-up. Lucas Leiva is a surprise name on England's flight to South Africa after it is finally discovered that he is in fact NOT Brazilian. Circumstantial evidence such as the misplaced pass at home to Manchester City makes the case for appeal futile."

Lucarse is all that is wrong with Benitez's Liverpool in a microcosm

I really hope that both of them are gone soon.

I haven't got the energy to explode anymore; he's at *best* a diffident, wholly average player, and that is apparent whenever you watch the useless cunt play

I agree he is central to all our great play this season. He is at the centre of everything we do....

Reels back in his bait.....

Never have I witnessed so much easily given praise. The worlds most average player is being lauded as a new Beckenbauer over on RAWK. A group wankathon on who can wax the most lyrical about our very own Barry Manilow. This is LFC Superfanism at its worst.

Xabi Alonso said: "Hahahaha. Fuck you!"

I suspect this is posturing from Rafa and beleives Mascherano will be going soon so Lucas will be a more 'dominant' figure in our play next season - thats how I am beginning to read this i.e. the praise and resting of Mascher ahead of Lucas.

*cries hot salty tears*

No player has depressed as much about the fact that he plays for my team more than Lucarse

Not sure where that piece comes from but if ever anyone needed proof that Rafa will never win us the league then this is it

That's worryingly feasible.

We might just pull it off though if we can spend about 700m and have the 10 best players in the world occupying the other places on the team.

I dont think he's as bad as you're all making out but he has no business starting for us as much as he does(even last year). I would insist on getting Veloso or Moutinho if we sell Mascher. plus another. but we wouldnt get the all the money to spend right?

The thing about Lucas is that his footballing mind is very good. He can spot a pass, knows where to pass the ball, its just a shame his weaknesses overshadow the positive elements to his game. He is improving as a player, getting a little more stuck in. If he could play like his mind works he could actually be a useful player to us, but this league is just too fast paced for him. He is easily overrun in the midfield and tends to mostly if not always come out second best.

Good player, but very very frustrating, he'd be better off in another league.

He'd be excellent in some leagues

a bit desperaye from rafa there .... good management to hlp paper over a mistake however... and it is true in the the last few games Lucas has been one of our best players.

Sadly we are still playing like shit and that dont matter much.

Us nonbelievers clearly dont watch the game properly or truly understand the tactics being displayed by this deity of a player. We dont notice the sheer alchemy being conjured up by this goliath, if only we could understand Rafa's genius like tactics, truly ALAS!

"They say he is not good enough for the Premiership but they haven't seen him play," Benitez told the club website.

"Only if you know nothing about football could you say he is not good enough to play in the Premiership."

Rafa Benitez on Mark Gonzales.
