It seems Rafa's youth policy is bearing some fruit...

with the emergence of ngog, nemeth doing very well for AEK Athens, Insua regular first team player and the Reserves banging them in and looking a classy outfit.. and there is also kelly who looks like he could be one future..

Is Rafa getting it right?? Lets be honest the youth structure was pants when he joined...

I think the future looks a lot brighter for the club than some people tend to believe... Let be honest our current form has tarnished a Dark Cloud over the club at the mo, so you can Understand the negativity... We still have a way to go, to become the next 'Arsenal'

If we can bring some quality players through.. then surely that can only be a good thing for future... meaning more money for that bringing in top quality World Class player.

thoughts ?

Yes, I think so. After a shameful period of political stalemate, he's really shown some vision and urgency in this area and it does seem to be working. We basically stepped aside from youth recruitment in the late 1990s and the first half of this decade, but we're finally being serious again, and the reserves are bright, disciplined and effective under McMahon.

I know what you're saying but to be fair the players he's brought through aren't really good enough for this club. Insua, N'Gog, Spearing, etc.

He hasn't tried to bring Spearing through. And N'gog is been everything I'd want from a youngster breaking through. Sadly hes been one of our best players this season.

then there is Nemeth & Kelly who looks a bright prospect...

I am not sayin 'oh look at the players where bringing through' it just looks a lot more promising than it has done in the past...

Not good enough for this club? This is what I don't get, fans bang on and bang on about youth players, yet the likes of N'Gog, who have actually come into the team, gotten stronger and given a good account of themselves are instantly deemed not good enough for this club. Arguably this year's reserve team has several promising players who have progressed and could quite feasibly make it in the future, not everyone goes into the first team Gerrard style and instantly becomes great.

The time to start judging the results is at least two or three years down the line. First of all Benitez, in more of an interim move, replaced some of the old dead wood with good young prospects from other clubs and youth systems. They, and the best of our old system, are the ones you're mentioning (and Insua has since been capped for Argentina - that's hardly a bad sign as far as giving young players a chance is concerned). The players found and brought through the new system are only just starting. Dalglish only started this season, as did McMahon, McParland and Segura. The new structure is really encouraging IMHO and it's one area of the club that gives me hope. And, as Houllier showed, it's very easy for a Liverpool manager, even one with a reputation for youth development, to ignore the whole thing because of the immense pressure to get results with the first team here and now, so, whatever his faults, Benitez deserves some gratitude for expending so much time and thought on this aspect of the club. It means he'll leave a real legacy, unlike Ged's atrophied system.

Spot on.

I would've thought he'd have been appeased by playing for the reserves regularly and getting a bit of first team action, however it's not *that* surprising given the rumours of him being unhappy / wanting to leave (can't quite remember what it was) last summer.

I think Spearing rejected a contract and it was redrafted. It might just be something like that. But Eccleston is quite a cocky young lad, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's had his head turned. (He was born in Newton Heath but came to us via Bury.)

FFS.

The first youngster to break into the first team & make any sort of impact in ages & he doesnt wanna stay.

Great Post. I also think it is unfair to expect the youth system to produce the next Fowler, Gerrard or Macca. We were tremendously blessed during the 90s to have such talented lads breaking through our system. Generating good premiership squad players will be a success. Some of the "stars" during Houlliers time are barely even playing in championshp or League 1. However, if we look at our current batch, there are many who have the potential to be more than useful squad players for us, thus saving money in the process. We can then focus our transfers on game changing players.

Also I read on other forums that the King nowadays spends a lot of time on the field encouraging young players and giving them tips. This has had a very positive influence on the academy setup. He is also playing an important role in the recruitment of young local talent.

In fairness, he's not really broken through nor has he made any impact in the first team. He's looked very good for the reserves however and I'd be disappointed if we couldn't hold onto him.

Does N'Gog fall into that category ? He has not really "emerged", he went straight into the first team squad as soon as he arrived.

Insua has a little way to go, I think he is doing OK, but perhaps expected a little more given the run he has had.
I think Nemeth is a strong possibility, but Pacheco is probably the most talented .

Things are better than they were though.
