Hi All - I have a 10 hour lay over in Bangkok and so need to pass the time somewhat. Of course I could venture into town and explore Buddha statues and the like (Not mentioning Pat Pong of cause) But the truth is I've been here a few times before and quite frankly in my eyes it's been done. I just want to get home to good old UK. So I'm holed up in a hotel waiting for my time (A few hours now) until my taxi arrives. I have found a spot in the hotel with a power point/WIFI and regular beer delivery. So I'm all set. Ignore if you will but responses would be good.

How about a healthy debate on the season so far, the future and maybe a retrospect on KK and how's he's done?

First up - Transfer Stuff In January - Tragic news about Lucas :-( I was gutted when I read about it this earlier. I know there are threads about this (and probably a lot of others I will touch upon - but please indulge a weary traveller) He's gone from zero to hero in about 18 months in my eyes. Enough has been said about his progress for me to add anything but I'm truly glad and now sad for the lad (poetry not intended). I could put it all down to his haircut change circa 2009 but that would be churlish - After all I'm not 'Brendan' 😉 Still I think most fans of every club not just the mighty reds would agree he is an awesome player and probably one of the very best DM in the PL. A great loss indeed.... - There is talk of a January signing - M'Villa, Tiote, Personally I would go for neither. There sometime seems to be a trend of following the latest zeitgeist in terms of transfer speculation. Some have been acted upon this and it's worked, other have not (Yes Arshavin I'm looking at you) In My opinion let's go with Shelvey and Spearing. They may not be names that spring from the transfer speculation zeitgeist but fuck! It's obviously a tightrope whatever you look at it. Both are proven to some degree and could be considered a gamble but what the hey. Give them a chance I say. There is alway Hendo and not forgetting our team captain to come into the frame.

How about our season so far? A 'B+' would be a fair assesement. Room to improve and become great but there is still big question marks. Let's look into them a little.

This seasons form - A sticky subject for most regular Anfield goers this season I know. I am not one of them. I'm a London based red as Spion and Peterhauge (Both gents BTW) will attest - I'm just looking at the results and what I have watched on the telly. I don't attest to be a tactical footy pundit but even I can see the wheat from the grass. Norwich, Swansea, and yes Sunderland. All matches we would all like to see win. Coupled with - Man Utd, Man City etc (Both pretty good results in my opinion) - I know it's poor given them stats but that has been the trend of the last few years. What has also been a trend is how Liverpool tend to finish the season waaaay better than we start. What are we now 11 games unbeaten? That is huge progress what ever way you look at it.

Lastly - lets quickly look at KK - I read some reports about that tart Savage saying that KK was not a world class manager. Those were the headlines BTW and not what he said fully. To some extent I agree with him. Or at least the full article. Sure he's not up there with Cruyff, Beckanbauer, or Guardialoa. He has never, as a manager been proven on the European stage (We all know why this was not the case sadly) But I would not have anyone else in charge of our beloved football club than the King. I'm not stating this as a matter of opinion to be debated because I know (Or or at least I hope I do) we all feel the same. Just look at the his picture with Bellamy the other day. Or his utter distain for the gutter press (Including Sky) It's his obvious passion for the club. I watched (along with Spoin and PeterHague) How he applauded the away fans at West Brom every time we sung his name. Every single time....

A quick round up of other random points - Carroll - I really like him. He seems massively low of confidence though. I haven't seen the latest Chelsea match but reports that I have read on here seem to suggest he played well (Apart from the pen miss of course) I am just desperate for the lad to do well. Although I always feel like that with new signings. Clough, Colloymore, Smicer and Kewell I had the same unfounded affection for. Some proved me right (Beautifully in Smicers case) Other sadly not.... Let's hope for the former.

Adam - I am very happy we have signed him. Not least because he seems to be doing a great job at filling in for Stevie G and now probably Lucas - I feel he could be LFC most important s ummer signing.

Carra - His time is far from up as some on here have said. Sure - Agger (When fit) And Skrtel - seem the obvious choice right now and that is the right decision in my opinion. If I was a betting man I would say that Kelly (Or possibly Coates - although Ive not seen much of him)would end up as CB at some point in the next year or two anyway. Still he will always remain at Anfield I think and provide support, Cover and leadership in whatever capacity offers itself to him.

Kuyt - He annoys me and elates me in equal fashion. I hate the way he loses the ball a lot but obviously I love I his workrate. This has been said many times and there is a part of me that wants to get rid and go for a different option (I'd be much happier with a right wing signing that a DM) Still he is the man who always pops up just when you least expect him to.

Bellamy - Is the new Gary Mac in my opinion and should be used as such. They were similar ages when they arrived I think. He plays in a different position so I'm not sure how that will work. I do love him though.

Thanks for reading. That post took 90mins of my time along with some good Pad See Eew as well. Be great to see some responses if anyone feels inclined 😉 5 hours till take off!

I agree with pretty well all of that.

Hope the rest of your journey goes well. 🙂

I think drinking Chang to while away the time might be better and no need to debate what you wrote.

I had a bottle of Chang at a hospitality event at Goodison once. I thought it was quite a nice and distinctive beer - not like standard lager. 🙂

Good post. Possibly far too fair and sensible to create much debate but that's a compliment not a criticism! One thing i did note is you failed to address Downing?

and not to mention the failure to address the debate on the most punchable face in football...

Chang, like most Asian beer are quite distinctive. You must try Tiger and Anchor Beer if you get a chance. St Miguel is nice too.

But I am not sure I would touch China's Tsingtao though. Chinese do not like malt much.

Steve clarke?

I think he should get a few more plaudits.

Chelsea have been gash since clarke left and in retrospect I can't help but think he was the perfect coach to joses manager role and likewise kenny - the two appear to work well

Steve Clarke and Ray Wilkins, both had effects on Chelsea when they left.

I think we need to buy a DM in January for a possible title run in the second half of the season and in case Lucas never comes back the same.

Carra wont sit around and be a back up. He'll go to another team or he'll retire and become a manager.

Kurt is really lulling us to sleep now, so whenever he does score next it will be the surprise of the year.

Thanks All - In regards to the 'Chang' Beer you really do need to make a distinction between 'classic' and 'Draft' one is significantly stronger than the other - I have found that out to my shame and have now moved onto 'Singha' - a good drop by all accounts!

In Regards to FFF - Downing is a good player for sure. But he seems to me the football equivalent of a roast beef brisket. Namely it gets better the longer it cooks (or plays for the same team by all accounts) To get the best out of him you need to wait. Look at him at Boro (We were after him there if you remember) And then at Villa (Where he was arguably one of the best wingers in the PL last season) For me I'd have in my team for sure (Forget about price tag etc)

How would Hendo, Bellamy, Downing, Adam or one of Shelvey or Spearing? Faire - could that work? Now even mentioning Maxi which is gonna open a who can of worms!

BTW I *Doths my cap* to FFF and Portly both posters I read regularly with interest. - Thanks also to everyone else too 😀

Hmmmm Clarke by all accounts should get more credit. An astute appointment to be sure. Time will tell I guess but so far he's been great. I'm not sure I have read any quotes from players singing his praises (feel free to prove me wrong) but in a way I like that. Did Fagin or Paisley get plaudits? Different time though maybe. Results have been good and along with the appointment of the King - Clarke has undoubtably been a factor. I'm glad he's here for sure.

Sadly Neil my head says no! I would bite your hand off for a top 4 though. Onwards and upwards - Especially in this age of Oligarchs and Sheikh's..... Sorry but that it is my opinion........ VERY much hope I'm wrong though. After all there is always good play, Good football philosophy and just a plain old bit of good luck... We'll see mate...

Well I said possible and by that I mean if you can give up on the title this early with the improvement we are showing what the hell is the point of supporting a team. We always have a good second half of the season. If you have no hope you must always be depressed. The fact that you are so unsure of us getting 4th is sad.

I don't get it, Mike. What has that second sentence got to do with the first?

Incidentally I often get Tsingtao from our usual Chinese takeaway over here. It's not outstanding, but it goes down OK.

Tsingtao is a great beer! Well I like it anyway...

BTW - great initial post RA, nothing really to debate about. I think what hasn't been said is that the team seems more of a team, everyone pulling together, good to see and although teething problems has meant the league position isn't ideal, Liverpool is definitely improving and heading in the right direction.

Sorry for being disjointed. Malt or hop are not natural produce of China and had to be imported. The Chinese usually use rice and wheat and other stuff to produce their alcoholic drinks, so they would not know how to brew a good beer.

good to see you posting mate. give me and Chucky Egg a bell when you're back in town, we'll have to meet up for a few beers n that.

Thanks everyone - All back now after a 13 hour flight. The missus was great and got me a few Changs in when I got home. It's early but I'm still on Thai time so feel no guilt 😛 Big shout to PeterHauge - let's meet up for beer or two soon fella 8) Or any other London Reds for that matter!

I've got about 3 MOTD's to watch and a good three or four Red games to watch which I recorded while away. Bring on the Chang! 8)

Top post Red Astaire.

There is not a world class manager out there who could have galvanised Liverpool like "King Kenny" He was always my first choice ahead of Roy. We were proved right in the end. Kenny has succesfully returned us to the Liverpool Way by re-introducing us to the core principles that made us a bastion of invincibility. There's a more familiar feel to the club with Kenny back at the helm. We're moving in the right direction at pace with the new Bootroom, back to the basics of pass and move, a strong English core, not to mention keeping all our business in-house. In the end, the return of Kenny is about the best bit of business conducted by the club.

The Bootroom:
Getting Clarke in was a masterstroke. His experience and credentials precede him. His sterling work with the squad and the individual one-on-one training has improved us no end. The type of free flowing pass and move football is a throwback to our glory days. He compliments Dalglish.

Carra is at the end of a glorious career and has accepted the challenge of not been an automatic starter with dignity. Fiercely competitve, he'll always give 100%. His experience is immeasurable and he'll be putting in the work to help the next generation. Hyypia turning down a coaching stint with us works to Carra's advantage.

Kingpin:
Lucas' injury comes at an inopportune time and with Gerrard out is a double blow. He has been our standout player helping us to play some fantastic football. The lads has been immense and he will be a loss. Trust Kenny to come up with a winning solution. I believe that De Rossi is available on a free in the summer as he has refused to sign a new contract. The lad is class with plenty of experience at the highest level of the game. He is a ready made replacement and will likely excel in the Premiership because of his style of play. Looking forward to a Gerrard return. May it be swift.

Off form:
Carroll is a player short on confidence. He put in gym work to bulk up as he still gets shrugged off the ball too easily, has to raise his fitness levels and game to new heights. In short he must adopt Lucas' attitude to get into the starting XI or risks been left on periphery.

Kuyt is for the moment a good option off the bench. He is in poor form much like Downing and Henderson to a certain extent, but his hard running creates gaps for other players. Needs to be more incisive and finish better.

Game breakers:
Bellamy has the potential to be our most important signing. He is a pacy game breaker and match winner with loads of experience. He should be starting ahead of Kuyt, Downing and Henderson as should Maxi. Step it up lads.

Adam, after slow start where his fitness and stamina were called into question has blossomed in Gerrard's absence and formed a fantastic central partnership with Lucas' no less. His form has dramatically improved as a direct result of improved fitness and stamina. looking a class apart and a great bargain.

Suarez is an amazing player but simply doesn't score enough. He can't do it on his own even though he often tries to. The lad needs a partner upfront. Bellamy is the man for the job.
