Dmishra & Peekay remarked in the Spurs match thread that the Lovren extension was proof of how poorly we evaluate players - we had every single bit of info you could want and years of first hand experience with him. And we gave him 100k a week until 2021. We're not even 6 months into that new contract and it couldn't look worse.

To be hooked after half an hour illustrates the extent of the braindead performance he was having.

His days should be numbered, but he's going to virtually unmoveable on that contract.

I was trying to figure out where he ranks in the Premier League - is he even in the top 30 in the league ? Would any Premier League side want him ?

P.s I'm really hoping for some Lovren memes / photoshop

Remember when we gave Traore a new 4 year contract in the summer of 2005. I honestly didn't think we could make a worse decision than that. But at least he was young(ish) and might have been considered to have potential

Djimi had potential:

Don't need no memes. Just follow Lovren's Instagram. Oh wait, you can't cos he's just deleted his own club from his account bio and disabled all comments. Boo hoo.

With the right coaching and a bit of luck he could have been scoring goals like that every week.

Nobody thought giving Lovren a 100K a week extension was anything other than fucking madness, apart from Klopp and whoever else agreed it at the club.

Even on 6cm the verdict was pretty unanimous, apart from the usual retards who would describe eating one of Klopp's turds as 'fragrant and delicious'.

Agreed - it was an amazing decision to not only extend the contract on existing terms, but to increase them too! What made Dejan think he was in a position to demand higher wages?! Maybe he knew about the lack of VVD back up plans.

I think he needs giving 2-3 weeks off to train, refocus and be protected for a bit.

Even if he gets dropped then he will still be on the bench because the defensive options are so threadbare. So if one of the other centre halves is injured or suspended then this clown comes back into the team anyway.
The way the defensive side of our game has been neglected under Klopp is ridiculous and if it carries on then it will be no surprise when the pressure grows.
Intransigence costs more managers their jobs than anything else and Klopps refusal to admit for so long that we are fundamentally weak at the back will catch up to him.

Don't get me wrong, he's shit, and mongolet is shit, but I do wonder if their inadequacies could be covered by top quality DM and a manager/coach that is an expert at bus parking if they need to.

A few people? Virtually everyone in that thread said either he wasn't good enough or wasn't worth the money or both.

A few said he should be 3rd choice and only Insignificance actually supported the decision to give him a bumper new contract.

Bears out that this forum isn't populated by swivel-headed mentalists who condone every decision made by the club, I bet the corresponding thread on RAWK would be universally in favour.

He was good as saints and has had periods of good play with us. Too prone to errors and at the moment looks as tho his head's gone. I said befoe the window that we needed two CBs and we still do.

Well, I've learned a new word today.

Good point though. Houllier was a prime example of this. For years I longed for him to just evolve the way we played into a more fluid, passing game. After 2001 I really thought we'd start progressing in that area. We had a great base - tight defence and Hamman in front of them, but could never seem to string two passes together going forward. Houllier never seemed to want to improve the way we played.

I keep coming back to a point I made a while ago.

Our defense has been shite for 4 seasons now. It's no co-incidence that in all that time we've had Mignolet in goal and refused to play a proper DM (Gerrard, then Henderson).

The defense is very poor, yes. But put a Makelele or Hamman type in front of them and you'd be amazed at how much better they perform.

Even at our best under Klopp, we tend to play headless chicken football. We're always one step away from meltdown - primarily because we lack that calm, clever player to get the ball to, to just calm everything and everyone down. Remember how many times Hamman would get us out of a tight spot or heavy pressure by drawing a foul, at the annoyance of the opposition.

It amazes me how stupid we are in recruiting.

Yup. Most people realised it was dreadful.

But anyone that thought he was worth signing as a 3rd choice was hoplessly wrong.

I agree that a genuine defensive midfielder would help us immensely but Klopp does seem very reluctant to sign one. He used Lucas plenty of times last season to try and shore up games and praised his influence over the team and squad but when he was sold in the summer along with Stewart he didn't try to replace or improve on them with new signings. Fair enough if they weren't good enough but look how much better defensively United are now they have Matic or the Improvement in Chelsea last season with Kante's arrival. It's not like the midfielders we already have in Wijnaldum , Henderson and Can are that good that we'll miss their passing ability with a more limited but defensively sound player instead of them, far from it.
Naby Keita looks like a great player but by all accounts he's not really a defensive midfielder but more of an all round midfielder rather than specifically there to protect the back four so he may well improve us but will it be enough.

The first thing Klopp should have done when he got here should have been what most top managers do when they join a big club (or us).
A new keeper. A new commanding CB or two. A top class holding midfield player. He did none of theses things, so he only has himself to blame. I'm amazed, frankly. Just one more disappointment in along line.

I wasn't vocally against the contract extension as you were at the time, to be honest. But the more I think about it, this could potentially be one of the worst contracts we ever gave to a player in terms of the knock off effect. Any half decent defender (Shawcross, Duffy) we attempt to sign will ask for a minimum of 150K.

Clyne, Gomez contract extension - their agents will point to Lovren's as the baseline.

I know Lovren isn't the best defender about and there was general amazement a large number of Lyon fans when we paid £20 million for him but I do wonder if the reported personal issues, his wife allegedly running off with some bloke or other, has had lasting mental damage. It's just that he keeps committing the same elementary errors pretty much every match to the point of insanity.

He hasn't always this bad for this long and last season he gave some cause for optimism with some strong performances, I recall he was good against united away. He is a good squad option like matip. Unfortunately he has doesn't quite have the concentration to play at the top level consistently well.
