Noise cancelling headphones

I was looking at the Sennheiser PXC 450 but they look too massive, especially to be carrying around. So now thinking about going all out for the Bose QuietComfort 3.

Is it worth shelling out for top of the range or can I get away with something cheaper?

They will mainly be used with an Ipod.
