I don't this is going to be a great deal for end consumer though especially those who don't like BT broadband service.
Sky won't drop their price so end up now having to subscribing to BT as well due to market fragmentation.

BT have said each English team playing in Europe will be free to air at least once, and I think the final has to be free to air. UEFA asked for assurances as although the cash deal is great for them, their sponsors and marketing partners prefer big audiences.

So 4 free Games season, pretty shit terrestrial TV didn't get games

So long as it stays free with BT Internet then it will represent a really good deal, much better than the current one.

It will affect bars badly though.

You think?

I assumed you'd get more people going to pubs on a week night cos they won't be able to watch it free on ITV.

Stan Collymore (tit) was going off on a rant on 5-live last night, saying that because BT had bought the rights for the champions league, that this was a disaster for fans and that all competitions would shortly all be on different pay-tv channels and it would cost you 10x what you pay now. He thinks it's much better that Murdoch monopolises the market and there's no competition to drive prices down, and sky should have right to everything. The twat.

An interesting fact (well I didn't know anyway) he said that the only reason that they don't televise 3pm games here is that it's to protect the clubs from fans not going to the games and watching it on the box instead. How showing it on the same day at 5pm or 12:45 and showing it on the TV doesn't have the same effect I don't know.

That is to protect the lower league matches at the same time more I think.

How is it any better than current one?
Those who don't have BT internet and never want will have to spend an extra £12 a month which is probably likely to rise, while Sky are unlikely to drop their subscription even though they will be showing less footy ultimately so end consumer gets shafted. All in the name of competition. All started with that EU role which mean PL packages had to be broken down into 5 (6 ?) packages in order to help competiion but I think it's had an adverse effect.

Itv coverage has been poor a number of years now. They only get one game per round of fixtures and no longer provide a highlights package. Hope it somehow breaks up skys dominance

When Murdoch monopolised the games it was cheaper than it is now.

'Competition' hasn't reduced the cost of watching football.

The internet has though.

Further reason to make the Champions League

BT Sport could pitch to steal World Cup from BBC and ITV

By Thomas Newton on Wednesday, 20th November 2013
BT Sport could bid for the broadcast rights to future World Cup games, taking them from the BBC and ITV.

Matches would still be broadcast live on free to view, non-subscription services like Freeview, Freesat and YouView as well as pay TV platforms like Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk TV, as well as BT’s own TV platform.
The BT Sport brand would however receive a boost in profile, which BT chief executive Marc Watson argues would lead to more people signing up for BT broadband.

Read Recombu Digital's guide to BT SportSpeaking to The Guardian, Watson pointed to a recent surge in TV and broadband subscriptions following the launch of BT Sport and revealed that the £897 million spent on securing Champions League rights was just the beginning.
Watson said: “We have been able to afford some pretty eye-watering sums because it drives a position in a big and lucrative market, and we are in a position to invest more.
"They [Fifa] are welcome in my office any time. We will look at all opportunities but I think getting the World Cup off BBC and ITV would be a challenge."
Fifa has already given BT the go ahead to bid for World Cup coverage and the broadcaster has been keen to give Freeview viewers a taste of BT Sport.
As all World Cup games apart from qualifiers are listed events BT will be required to show games on Freesat as well, something which it hasn’t yet done.
When asked about Premier League games, Watson didn’t comment on whether BT would bid for greater coverage but said that he sees BT Sport as being a strong second broadcaster alongside Sky Sports.
BT Sport has the rights to broadcast 38 Barclays Premier League games over the next three seasons while Sky Sports has the rights to the remaining 116.
