Nice Gesture

Not surprising in any way shape or form.

His love and respect for the club and city should never ever be in doubt.

i know a lot of people disliked him
Plenty of people including myself felt that he had got to the end of the line as our manager, but I doubt whether many supporters actually disliked him as a man. I liked him and I always thought his facial expressions, while he was saying nothing during press interviews, were very amusing.
maybe, maybe not. the impression i always got is that a lot of people weren't fond of him as a man - his apparent coldness etc. maybe it's a warped impression due to sheer vociferousness of his critics.

Very true.

Too many of these gestures have gone forgotten in the last 12 months, and I guiltily include myself in that

Yep nice gesture Rafa. I wish he'd have got it right here. As Brendan said, he'll be part Scouser forever.

I reckon you're both right about the way people felt about Rafa. Unlike Portly I found his extreme guardedness in interviews somewhat irritating, but I didn't actively dislike him. However, I do think a number did, and I don't reckon they can really be criticised for it, as you can't simply choose whom you're going to like or not like (though some of the ungenerous reactions after his departure were a pity).

Former LFC manager Rafa Benitez donates “significant†amount to Liverpool’s Lily Centre
Jun 12 2010 by Staff Reporter, Liverpool Echo

THE co-founder of Liverpool’s Lily Centre today admitted she was “overwhelmed†after receiving a “significant†donation from Rafa Benitez.

The former Liverpool FC boss, who on Thursday gave £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group, yesterday helped another charity he holds close to his heart.

Though co-founder Peggy O’Brien would not disclose the amount on the cheque Benitez wrote, she revealed it would go a long way to helping the day-to-day running of The Lily Centre – a breast cancer support group – for a considerable time.

Mrs O’Brien said: “It was an absolutely fantastic gesture and we are all over the moon – it was completely overwhelming.

They now have 750 female volunteers and two men helping them when they open every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mrs O’Brien said: “This gesture will just help make things that bit easier for us and helps with the cost of running the centre.

“We do not get any government funding and we do not have any paid workers. Myself and Winnie both had breast cancer and we started this off from nothing.

“Everything is done on a volunteer basis and we cannot thank Rafa and Montse enough for helping us.

“They have supported us ever since they came to Liverpool in 2004 and there is no doubt they will remain our friends.â€

“We have known Rafa and [his wife] Montse for a long time but we did not expect this at all. You just do not expect people to give you money like that.

“Rafa and Montse have been good to us in the past and they did things that people would not know about, such as when he gave us Fernando Torres’ first Liverpool shirt for a raffle, which raised £4,900.

“But this just came completely out of the blue. We know they are moving on because Rafa has changed jobs, but we will keep in contact with them.â€

Mrs O’Brien and Winnie Keating set up the Lily Centre, which is based in Silvester Street, Kirkdale, 11 years ago.

Top man. You can't knock that.

Exactly. I've never understood the hysterical, reaction to our boss, from either the haters or the lovers. At the end of the day he's just a man, which makes him fallible like anyone else.

He clearly holds a massive affinity to the city and the club. I'd have no hesitation in having him back in the future once we've got rid of the Yank twats and all the other politics.

Ex-Liverpool FC boss Rafa Benitez makes donation to Rhys Jones fund
Jun 25 2010 by Ben Schofield, Liverpool Daily Post

Generous former Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez made a “substantial†cash donation to the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund yesterday.

He arranged for one of his old coaching staff at Anfield to hand-deliver a cheque to Rhys’ mother Melanie at the West Derby Tesco where she works.

Benitez said: “I am doing this on behalf of the people that cannot.

“I know that every person on Merseyside would have loved to give the Fund a donation but they are in hard times and can't find the extra cash.â€

Rafa Benitez and wife Montse offer parting gift to Hoylake Cottage
Jun 25 2010 by Gary Stewart, Liverpool Daily Post

As they prepare to leave for Italy former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez and his wife Montse have offered a final donation to the Merseyside care home they have supported since arriving in the city.

The couple left a “generous†but unspecified amount to the Hoylake Cottage Day Care Appeal. It is a parting gift from the couple as Montse gives up her voluntary role of chair of Hoylake Cottage’s social events committee.

She has helped to galvanise support for a £1.5m appeal for a new day care centre for older people.

Now, Montse is house hunting and checking out schools in Milan, as Rafael prepares to take up his new job in charge at Inter Milan FC.

Montse Benitez said: “I was very close to my granny who had dementia for 10 years until she died.

"Also, I would like to say a huge thank you to Montse for her support over the years; she has been a fabulous ambassador for Hoylake Cottage and has helped us to gain much-needed support for our events and campaigns.

“I wish her and Rafa lots of success in their new life in Italy.â€

Work will start later this year on the first phase of the centre demolishing part of the old building to build a new kitchen and laundry.

“She had a nurse at home, but not everyone is so lucky which is why I wanted to help Hoylake Cottage.

“I will keep in touch with all the progress and hopefully once the new centre is built, I will come back to join in the celebrations.â€

Hoylake Cottage Chair of Trustees Tony Twemlow said: “The gift from Montse and Rafa is extremely generous and we are all more grateful than we can say for their tremendous kindness.

“Their donation will go a long way to helping us to build a centre which will provide relief to older people and those who care for them at home.

I miss Rafa already and the more I see of our list of candidates to replace Rafa, the more he will be missed.
