No. Each sequence of plays each team has 4 goes to move the ball 10 yards. If they move the ball 10 yards they get a new set (4) more downs.Wonderful
Now i've been reading the rules. The 2 things I don't get are 1) safety's and 2) downs
Re: 2) i get the drives and downs, but I saw spin mentioning "4th and 1" earlier. What? Is that the 4th quarter 1st down, or something else

So for example.
Vikings get the ball on the opposition 30 yard line.
First down they run the ball 3 yards.
So they now sit 2nd and 7 (second down and 7 yards to go)
Then they throw for 2 yards.
So now they sit 3rd and 5 (third down and 5 yards to go)
On the third okay they run the ball 10 yards.
So they have a new set of downs and sit 1st and 10 on the opponents 15 yard line.
The important part here to note is that if you use all 4 of your plays without getting the 10 yards the opponent gets the ball from exactly where you were stopped.
So most teams in most occasions only use 3 of their 4 downs and on the 4th down they punt the ball so that when the opponent has it back they are much further away from their goal.
If you watch one full game start to finish you will understand downs.
