NFL Off Season (Draft, FAs, coaching carousel)

I heard on the radio this morning that Ocho Cinco is planning on Twittering during games this year, and has challenged he Bengals to sop him.

Matt Cassel, a career backup in college and in the pros, parlayed a great 2008 season into a lucrative franchise tag. Now, he's locked himself into a deal to be the long-term quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel and the Chiefs worked out a six-year deal that will pay him in excess of $10 million a season, according to a source. The contract will keep Cassel with the Chiefs until 2014.

The deal is for $63 million, with $28 million guaranteed, according to a source. He's going to make $40.5 million in the first three years of his contract.

Cassel was designated as the New England Patriots' franchise player in February and signed a one-year deal that paid him $14.561 million. He was then traded to the Chiefs along with linebacker Mike Vrabel for a second-round draft choice.

Montana doesn't really count. Green was good though.

Anyways, this is what it's all about...

Although I hope he doesn't start AT ALL this season.

A woman has filed a lawsuit accusing Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger(notes) of raping her last summer in his penthouse hotel room at a casino in Lake Tahoe during a celebrity golf tournament.

Roethlisberger’s lawyer denied the allegations Tuesday, and noted that the woman, who was working at the hotel as an executive casino host, never went to the authorities.

“Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone. The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct,†David Cornwell said in a statement. “If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated.â€

Cornwell did not immediately reply to a phone message and e-mail seeking more comment.

The suit also alleges hotel officials for Harrah’s Lake Tahoe went to great lengths to cover up the incident.

It seeks a minimum of $440,000 in damages from the quarterback, at least $50,000 in damages from the Harrah’s officials and an unspecified amount of punitive damages “sufficient to deter†Roethlisberger and the others “from engaging in such conduct in the future.â€

The woman’s lawsuit says she didn’t file a criminal complaint because she feared Harrah’s would side with Roethlisberger and she would be fired. The suit doesn’t say whether the woman is still working for Harrah’s.

Err.... I don't think so, amigo.

Anyways, as reasonably successful as that trio was, it was a FAR different team (and set up) to the one awaiting young Matt.

Long time Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson has passed away ... He was one of the best defensive coordinators around.

First Cowboys preseason game last night, only watched the first half.

Heard on the radio today that Vick signed a contract with the Eagles.

Stafford's debut so far.... 3 solid passes, one for a first down, the other 2 were dropped by the receiver when under zero pressure.

It's gonna be another long year.

I watched a few highlights, and read what the dc.com boys had to say ...

Gonna be a long season ... but things could be very interesting with a healthy Felix Jones, the 2 TE set and a far more dangerous defense (Orlando Scandrick is going to be looked back as one of the best draft day steals in recent times if he continues his development curve)

Stafford looks excellent thus far (I've never seen a decent QB in honalulu blue before so am getting excited). Not been put under any pressure yet though.

Lions win on the last play of the game!

16-0 is on!

(although they did go 4-0 last pre-season before a not quite so favourable regular season record).

Has he been officially named as the starter for this season?

Goldenball has decided to remain retired.

Look for him in Vikings uniform by the end of training camp.

Ahem.

Vick's made his debut:

HILADELPHIA (AP)—All eyes were on Michael Vick(notes)—for all of six plays.

Playing his first NFL game since his release from prison, the Eagles quarterback got a standing ovation in a half-empty stadium, avoided any ugly protests and completed four passes for 19 yards.

“It’s been a long journey for me,†Vick said. “I just want to do it right this time around.â€

Though his minutes were limited Thursday night, Vick was ready to take on any assignment. He played quarterback, ran the wildcat formation, even lined up at wide receiver and completed a pass right-handed.
