Most seasons we finish strongly and we look forward to the summer signings and have great optimism that we will win the league because we're Liverpool and that's what we do. The thing is we haven't done it for 20 years now. It's finally dawned on me why we haven't and I believe the simple reason is ownership.
David Moores loves the club, but he's no businessman and no sports owner that much is clear. After reading the excellent book from Brian Reade I was astounded at the shambles the club had become. It was embarrassing to read how shoddy and amateurish the organisation had become. Had David Moores and Rick Parry had any kind of nous there would have been no reason to sell the club. But they did to the worst owners in history and we all know what happened there. Between David Moores' ownership and Hicks & Gillett it spanned the 20 years of hurt. We had some great successes in that period Istanbul and the cup treble spring immediately to mind. Most clubs would take that in 20 years to be fair.
What's different this time? Fenway. They brought the World Series back after 80 years. And we think we had it bad! They make all the right noises in my opinion, and are committed sports owners who want to win, and more importantly know how to do it. We've swapped the worst owners in American sport with the best. After the trauma of Hicks & Gillette, its natural to be suspicious. But I choose to believe.
We take pride in the 'Liverpool Way' quite rightly, but over the last 20 years its been a double edged sword in my opinion. It's held us back when we should have been moving forward. The game changed and we clung on top the past using this phrase, which meant different things to different people and there was never a clear definition. In the end the Liverpool Way was a misnomer for inertia and stagnation.
The Liverpool Way has been superceded by Fen-Way. Redefined. They under-promise yet over deliver and I choose to believe. They keep matters in house and communicate with the fans when they have something to say. They handled the sale of Torres magnificently. They listened to the fans when when we demanded Hodgson's removal and the installation of King Kenny. By all accounts they wanted to spend more in in the January window.
We have committed owners who know how to win, the last Liverpool manager to win the league is back in charge. The circle is complete. We've immediately seen the difference on the pitch for a net spend of 2 million. What will it be with a net spend of 10, 20 times that or more? We have the best crop of young players probably in the history of the club. I choose to believe. Going from 5th to first is unlikely and we may have to make a stop at second before we get there, but guess what? I choose to believe.
Next year will be our year.
