just think we have way too many midfielders and i don't think any of them have much pace.

Downing is fast. I dont know why people think he isn't.

We may not have the Thierry Henry type pace in the team but Gerrard, Suarez, Carroll and Downing are no slouches while Meireles and Kuyt gets about the field. While pace is a potent weapon to have, I'd settle for balance first. With the amount of left footed players brought in, I daresay we have it and it will add another dimension to our play.

Some of our key players this season will be squad players next season.

There's something we haven't heard in any of the many threads about our midfield.

quite frankly i'm surprised this hasn't been discussed in depth already

Gerrard's quick, Henderson's quick, Downing's quick, Adam has a burst of speed over 10 yards. Don't see the problem myself.

got to love these threads that revolve around people's subjective idea of "fast" and "slow".
"downing is slow"
"no, he is only deceptively slow"
"well maybe not slow slow, but he certainly isnt fast"
etc etc

I think we could have done with a pacey winger / attacker, but I don't think that's going to happen this summer.

Hopefully one of Raheem or Sterling will step up to fill in that void over the next couple of years.

It's not subjective so much as its relative to the average premiership full back. Downing doesn't have much more pace than those full backs, and therefore people describe him as (relatively) slow. The fact they both him and the full backs are both quick is mostly irrelavent. Only their relative speed is important.

Take insua. He makes any old fucking winger look like usain bolt

Again, does Downing not fit into this category?
Would you have rathered Aaron Lennon?

Well, Downing isn't really the type of player I had in mind when I wrote that... but if his is a name that pops into your head when you think of a pacey winger then I guess he does fit into that category.

As for Aaron Lennon, yeah and Djibril Cisse would have been great too. Any other average pacey players you'd like to mention to try and make some kind of point?

Pace doesn't come from central midfielders so it's a moot point.

It only ever comes from wingers or full-backs, and a striker if you're lucky. We've got Glenjo, and then Downing who's kinda quickish but that's it, even then I'm not that fucking arsed cos the importance of pace in your side is grossly overrated.

Suarez is no slouch Ryan. Gerrard is a very strong runner and is rarely out paced.

Henderson looks lively and Downing can move too.

Dave:

I'm not saying anyone of those players are slow. Or fast. Or whatever.

Just that pace isn't that vital. Every side has 2 or 3 speedy players, but the team isn't built around them and they're not that fucking pivotal to be honest.

The only position where pace is more or less a pre-requisite is full-back. You don't have to be lightning to play there, but if you're slow then you're fucked. Can't really say that for any other position imo.

My point is that very pacey players, like Aaron Lennon, arent necessarily the answer.
I'm happy that Downing fits the bill.

I think it's safe to assume that when someone is talking about adding a bit more pace to the side it's going to be coupled with quality.

It's the same thing every time this comes up and it's boring now... Lennon.. eh? eh? That who you want? How about Cisse? Huh? Huh? He was fast, but shit!!!

Anyone would think that people are advocating sending our scouts to 100M sprint events.

I drove past a billboard with Messi playing football on it yesterday and my 3 year old daughter pointed out the window and said "Look Daddy, it's you!". I should say I look nothing like Messi, but apparently - according to my daughter - I am a famous footballer.

So I propose that Liverpool sign me.

I bet you could....

As long as we've got Suarez and perhaps a new pacy winger-type I'm not to concerned. This could also be a new pacy LB in the Cissohko mould of course.

Adam has already showed glimpses of why he's going to be a bargain. Gerrard's industrious when back to his best and both Downing, Henderson and Kuyt can run.

As long as you've got pace in the right positions you don't need a whole squad of Carl Lewises.

Can't wait for the new Season to get underway, it's GOING TO BE OUR YEAR!!

Obviously.

Bollocks. He's actually quite fast for his height.

I know Ryan, I agree with you. Was just saying that we do in fact have some players who can move, which is a good thing.
