Steven Gerrard has thrown his hat into the ring to succeed Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager.
The Reds skipper says he sees a future career in management and insists taking charge of Liverpool is his dream.
Gerrard’s current contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season and although he isn’t considering hanging up his boots just yet, the England captain has already given thought to life after playing.
‘The dream come true would be to manage Liverpool, when the Liverpool job becomes available,’ he said.

‘There are world-class managers there ready already, but we’ll have to wait and see, it would be the icing on the cake.
‘When you get to a certain age… my age, you need to start thinking seriously about a life after football.’

The 33-year-old is preparing to take his coaching badges before the start of next season, although admits there is still time for him to change his mind over his future career path.
‘I just signed a one-year extension, I need to start planning for the future. I am planning on doing my badges and qualifications over the next 12 months,’ he added.

‘I definitely see myself as a manager rather than a coach, but that could change. I remember speaking to Jamie Carragher and he really fancied it but he’s decided media is what he wants to do.
‘It’ll be strange seeing him on Sky but I’m really delighted he’s doing it… He can leave managing Liverpool to me!’

Future Liverpool boss? Steven Gerrard can do the job (Picture: AP)
Liverpool fans have enjoyed years of watching Steven Gerrard ‘spreading balls with wisdom’ and they could see him ‘shouting peals of wisdom’ from the Anfield dugout should he go on to become the Reds’ boss.
The Liverpool and England captain has, for the first time, admitted he would like to one day manage the club where he has spent 15 years as a professional, captaining the side for a record 11th campaign this season.
It’s interesting that Gerrard could end up taking such a route after he retires. The general opinion had always been that Jamie Carragher – a so-called ‘student of the game’ – would be the more likely of the loyal duo to head into management but Carra, for the time being at least, has taken the road into media work.
Gerrard is a different sort of leader than the traditional all-guns-blazing John Terry-type and other former England captains. In fact, it was labelled at him that perhaps Gerrard doesn’t have the attributes to actually be a captain in his early years at Liverpool.
Rather than shouting or screaming at team-mates, Gerrard leads by example. He has carried the side for years and dug them out of the mess on more occasions than you can recall. He is a true leader.
Attracting players to a team with Gerrard at the helm certainly wouldn’t be an issue
More recently, especially under Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard seems to have taken an even greater sense of responsibility. He is more disciplined with his play, has adapted to a different role to benefit both himself and the team, is quick to engage with referees – but not in a hostile manner – and appears to be enjoying life as he nurtures the abundance of youngsters coming through at Liverpool.
‘Steven Gerrard is a great captain for club and country,’ said newly appointed England Under 21 captain and Liverpool team-mate Andre Wisdom yesterday.
‘It doesn’t matter what position you play, you can learn a lot from him, especially training with him every day and seeing the way he presents himself and lifts teams in times of need. I can see the way he lifts the team and hopefully I can do the same.’
Quite right.
Gerrard certainly has the correct mentality to enter management and also the experience in his playing career. He’s worked under an superb list of managers, each of whom have different styles which will ultimately help him when choosing his own approach as a boss.
We’ve seen the success of Michael Laudrup with Swansea and Gerrard is a player of a similar reputation in football. More recently top players appear to be signing for managers rather than the team itself, so attracting players to a team with Gerrard at the helm certainly wouldn’t be an issue.
For now though, Gerrard can concentrate on prolonging his playing career and giving Liverpool fans even more memories of him as a player.
