Guess Saturday night shenanigans means the hacks couldn't be bothered writing any new rumours or lies and there is little innuendo to report either.

Roy Hodgson is happy to see Liverpool linked with Joe Cole, but insists he has not held talks over a deal for the midfielder.

Cole is looking for a new club after being released by Chelsea and he has attracted interest from London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.

However, bookmakers have suspended betting on which club Cole will join next season amid rumours the England international is bound for Anfield.

Reds boss Hodgson has not spoken to the 28-year-old recently and refused to expand on rumours he could become a Liverpool player.

"I'm not a betting man so that doesn't actually play a big part that betting is suspended," Hodgson told Sky Sports News.

"I don't even know enough about betting to know what that means.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club.

"I know we've been connected with him, and it's good to know we're connected with players of that quality, but I don't have anything to report on the subject.

"I haven't had any discussions with him, but I had a brief chat a while back.

"If you want to know about transfer targets, and how things are progressing, you'll have to ask (managing director) Christian Purslow because he's the man looking after those discussions, not me."

Hodgson also revealed he met with Liverpool co-owner George Gillett prior to the club's opening pre-season friendly against Al-Hilal in Austria being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

He added: "It was nice to meet him, of course. I don't know him very well, but it was nice to speak to him.

"It was good of him to come to the game. It's a pity that, I'm sure, like the rest of us he would have liked to have seen Liverpool play."

Roy Hodgson could return to his old club Fulham and sign Paul Konchesky with Liverpool currently without a recognized left-back.

The 29-year-old was a regular for Hodgson's Fulham side last season, playing 39 games to help them reach the Europa League final. However, the England international has a year left on his contract and is thought to be keen to cash in on a move at this stage of his career.

Fulham reportedly turned down a £1.5million bid from Birmingham City several weeks ago and Blues boss Alex McLeish could increase his offer for the left-back.

Liverpool are set to begin the season without a recognized left-back unless they make a signing in the coming month. Brazilian Fabio Aurelio has left the club and Argentinian youngster Emiliano Insua is also set to leave Anfield, with a £5million move to Fiorentina likely to be completed this week.

Liverpool are pondering a bid for Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen, according to reports.

The Danish international is, like many of his Turin teammates, available for transfer at the right price.

According to whispers, the Premiership outfit are considering a move for the player at the request of new boss Roy Hodgson.

Juventus are ready to sell one from Poulsen, Momo Sissoko and Felipe Melo after the outfit failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Premier League giants Liverpool are looking to sign Christian Poulsen from Italian powerhouse Juventus, according to latest reports.

Tuttocalcionews.it reports that the Reds want to sign the Danish international medio and are ready to barter midfielder Dirk Kuyt in exchange. The Bianconeri are looking to sell one of their midfielders in order to raise funds to invest in other departments, and it appears that they would be willing to listen to Liverpool's offers.

The News of the Screws reports that Hodgson is prepared to push the boat out to sign Cole, which would send a statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League. Apparently, Cole will be offered a massive £4.7million-a-year deal, equivalent to a £90,000 three-year contract in order to become Hodgson's first major signing.

Liverpool's England contingent, Steven Gerrard , Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson, return to training at the end of the week and Hodgson would be delighted if their World Cup team-mate Cole were to join them.

Werder Bremen have admitted that they could yet sell Mesut Oezil this summer, despite previously ruling out any transfer.

Clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus are all closely monitoring the situation of playmaker, following his superb performances for Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

The Bundesliga outfit had made it clear that they were determined to hold on to their star player, by stating that Oezil was not for sale at any price. However, general director Klaus Allofs has now seemingly had second thoughts, revealing that the 21-year-old could leave the Hanseaten after all.

"We're keen to hold on to Mesut for a couple more seasons and we want him to sign a new deal with us," Allofs was quoted as saying by Bild.

"However, if that turns out to be impossible, we might have to look at other solutions."

Oezil's current contract with Werder runs until June 2011, but the Bundesliga outfit could cash in on the gifted midfielder this summer if an offer in the region of £17 million comes in.

Chelsea have ruled out a move for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres due to a surplus of strikers, according to manager Carlo Ancelotti.

He said: "I don't think we need any other strikers. Nothing has changed, because in the next few days Drogba, Anelka and Kalou will return - and we have Sturridge."

So we haven't held talks with Cole, but Hodgson has spoken to him.

Confused ?

If we let Dirk go for Poulsen I'm going to drive to Melwood and wedgie the shit out of hodgson.

I still think that buying Ozil at a reported 17m (given he's only a year left on his contract) is a good long-term option. With Gerrard 30, buying a 21 year old Ozil will sort that position for years to come. There'll not be another chance to buy him at this price.

he's done really well to lose insua. don't worry about konchesky and poulsen, he should just focus on getting rid of el zhar and plessis next. right now is not the time to make hasty decisions lets just enjoy not having shit players in our squad for a a little while at least. is that too much to ask?

Having missed out on the UEFA Champions League, it is imperative that the Reds make inroads in continental competition this season.
That means the pressure will be on Hodgson, who guided Fulham to the Europa League final last term, to deliver results.

However, the experienced coach has made it clear that he will not throw the likes of Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres into action ahead of schedule. "Possibly none of our World Cup players will play in the early Europa Cup games," Hodgson said in the News of the World.

"The sports science people are telling me we would be foolhardy to use players who have been training for only three or four days on the back of the World Cup that early on because it will affect us further on down the road. "If we feel we are endangering our chances in the Premier League, it will be a decision the club will have to take."

We've got our first competitive game in two weeks time and currently have no left back and all our internationals are on holiday. So yeah, I can see where you're coming from.

Kelly is a better defender than Insua, has played at LB and is available.

Ok, but the fact remains, our season starts in two weeks. We need players.

Expecting Kelly to be the next big thing is a bit like expecting Torres to play more than 20 games this season. He's been through the Melwood dehamstringing machine. It's a worry.

we don't need average squad players. we need to give a chance to kelly, pacheco and shelvey and other people who we are paying money to already.

and if we do that, it presents the club in a better light when torres and gerrard consider the future. if we go ahead and sign konchesky and poulsen then we're going to lose far better players as a result.

the way I see it is this;

* we have a paper thin squad
* we don't have a lot of money to spend
* mash will leave (its more likely than not)
* he'll be expensive to replace (properly)

so I would pay the lion's share of the transfer kitty on a striker and CM and hope that our supposedly talented youngsters can pull up the slack for the rest of troublesome positions in the team rather than buying several low grade cloggers to pad the squad out.

First of all, there's no concrete evidence to say we're after either player, and secondly, it's bollocks to suggest that the way to win over Torres and Gerrard is to offer our future as a couple of young lads coming through the ranks, especially when the alternative is playing alongside the likes of Ronaldo, Kaka and Drogba.

He's good enough for the early EL matches.

I'd wager torres and gerrard would be more satiated seeing the arrive of 1, maybe 2 quality players (with kids picking up the slack) then several absolute cloggers to pad out the squad.

I love the way some posters have blind faith in 'our talented youngsters' to make the step up with ease, despite having watched in agony as Insua and Wash tried (and failed) to do that last season.

having personally watched kelly he is a hell of a lot more talented than insua and as for ngog I have no problem with him being 3rd choice with an established striker being bought.

That Gerrard lad went on to do ok.
[/quote]

Yeah, it's a good job that was under the exact same system & it hasnt been utterly & completely dismantled, changed & every member of the staff moved on.

you're wrong, i have no faith they will step up. but everyone will look forward to seeing if they can and feel more positive and hopeful.

also the step up isn't as bad this season because there's no title challenge and no champions league. so there's not going to be a better oppurtunity to take risk than right now

Yeah but it was only 12 years ago!

Is anyone seriously comparing Pacheco and Kelly to Steven Gerrard? Look, I was very impressed with Kelly in the ONE senior game that he played, but he's been injured practically all the time since then and I remember most people being quite impressed with Insua just over a year ago. We don't want to be in a situation where we're forced to shove an injury-prone youngster in the first team because there's no decent cover available. We need two new LBs, it's as simple as that.

Agreed, and it's probably his worst position in the back 4 as well.

I reckon it's a big year for Pacheco as well. He needs to step up now.

Roy doesn't have as much pressure and expectation isn't as high so the kids should get more chances.

It wouldn't surprise me if deals for the likes of Figueroa, Remy and hopefully even Cole are completed soon :

Woy quote :

"Things can happen before the 29th of July, we will not be speculating on that and there is no point in me making predictions of what the team will be like for that game.

"The sports science people are advising me not to use the players from the World Cup.

"Therefore new signings would become important for the Europa Cup."

A snippet I heard was he was to be farmed out for the season.

Yeah I think it was mentioned that a Spanish club wanted to take him on loan.
