..have just beaten Bahrain and are now in next year's World Cup.

for comedy value only. ;D

Watched the game.

Bahrain missed a penalty, and that would have sealed qualification for them if scores remained 1-1.

Credit to New Zealand manager... put out a 4-3-3 formation and stuck with it even when they were 1-0 ... knowing very well a score draw would mean Bahrain went through.

Yeah NZ will be potential whipping boys... but making it to the WC is still a big achievement for them and best of luck to them.

Cant believe it. If Malaysia join the OCEANIA, wonder we can reach the world cup or not? ;D

Ong! It's been too long man! Do post more!

Hopefully South Africa draw them so they can get 3 points ...

Tell me about it. But in my case my parents are one half Malaysian, another half Singaporean, my great grandma was Japanese and I was born in the USA.

Neither country will win the World Cup.

Or even do well, I don't even think 3 of them have played in the finals. Kinda like Pakistan (or even worse azad Kashmir who I don't even think have a team, where I was born). I only claim them for cricket though

Canada: 1 World Cup (1986), 3 games, 0 goals. Though we had a creditable scoreless draw with, I think, either France or the Soviets. And we have to deal with Central American officiating every campaign. I'll never get to cheer them in the World Cup.

It is an absolute fucking joke that a shower of shite like that New Zealand side are going to be in a World Cup.

I watched Saturday's game, and a few others they've played this year; they're absolutely fucking rubbish, and will get destroyed by everyone in South-Africa.

The first New Zealand fans are already on their way to South Africa.

I have a strong suspicion that, had Ireland beaten the French on Saturday night, your bile would be somewhat diluted.

I saw New Zealand lose recently to a very poor South Africa team in a friendly match. to say that New Zealand looked to be weak in that game would be a massive understatement. The only regular they were missing that day was their captain Ryan Nelson (Blackburn) but I doubt his presence will improve them much. Cannon fodder.

New Zealand will be the worst team in the competition, no doubt.

I don't expect North Korea to be significantly better.

Haha. Good call but i still think the kiwis will win out. As in lose more and by bigger margins than NK.

Can they be drawn into the same group?

FFS give New Zealand a break.

They were set a qualification path and they did what they had to do to make the competition.

Are there better countries out there who didn't qualify? Sure.

I take nothing away from their achievement... to go to Bahrain and get a 0-0 in tough conditions, and then to do the job at home against a better opponent was great to see.

Furthermore, they play with a 4-3-3 formation and go out there to play open football and attacking football - and I respect them for doing that ... I rather see a team try to play football, than see a team like Greece ffs who pump it long from defence for 90 minutes.

NZ are not a top side, no one is claiming they are ... but New Zealand is a sporting nation and will get behind their side, and we'll see how they go. They have time to get things sorted - money and resources will be given to the side because of qualification and they can only improve from that.

...is a fair point. But its easy to understand where the Irish (hopefully the French by Thursday) are coming from.

Personally I don't have a problem with weaker nations like New Zealand having a place in the World Cup. I know it is meant to have the worlds best teams on show (and it does) but it is the WORLD Cup and thus I think it is only right that there is a global element to the competition.

Besides, some of my more enjoyable world Cup memories involve the exploits of the underdogs, Wasn't it Tunisia that almost knocked out West Germany in Argentina '78? Who could forget the impact Cameroon made in Italia '90 and also in Spain'82? Vive la underdog!

Hold the front page, they got a 0-0 in Bahrain. Wow.[/quote]

If you understand the Asian Confederation, you'd know that it is a good result indeed.

Playing in countries like Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia is incredibly difficult. These nations are hot, and the humidity there is absolutely incredible.

Players who are not used to these conditions lose up to 5kg's playing one match.

Then, let's not forget that New Zealand had to travel 14,500 kilometers to play in Bahrain... so that's a ridiculously long flight via East-Asia, limited time to train and adjust to conditions.

Long flight + hot and humid weather + limited preparation and time to acclimatise + Bahrain being the better and more experienced side ... 0-0 was indeed a good result.

If Liverpool reserves lost away to them I'd be disappointed.

edit: in fact I'll take that back. Make it a Liverpool Calring Cup team.
