New Year optimism

Does anyone have the feeling now that the only way is up? I've been as pessimistic as most on here recently, but I think maybe the Porsmouth match was us hitting bottom. We didn't play especially well against Wolves, but we got a bit of luck and took advantage. It's heartening that we managed both to score a second goal AND to keep a clean sheet.

Perhaps Mascher's suspension, forcing our ultra-conservative manager to start Aquilani in a few games, will prove to be a blessing in disguise? We'd be stronger with Mascher in the side, undoubtedly, but at least his absence breaks up the negative Mascher-Lucas CM partnership and forces us to play more attacking football.

Of course, this post will look like more khl-style delusion if we lose at Villa, or if Torres gets injured again, but I just have a feeling that the second half of the season will be a lot more positive than the first. I don't know... maybe I'm just sick and tired of feeling negative about my team. Anyone else optimistic?

I was optimistic that we were only 12 points behind Chelsea, until I realised that we were 8 behind Vill and face them at VP on Tues. Win that and I may feel vague optimism.

Tuesday is a crucial match. If we can nick it I think we really can finish in the top 4 comfortably. A lot will also depend on the January transfer window. Let's see what happens then.

Its weird because i sort of am optimistic but at the same time i can see why we are where we are in the table, if the rest of the season is anything to go by we will lose against Villa but at the same time i still find myself counting how many points off we are from Chelsea, ridiculous but true. We should be a shit load better than what we actually are but the truth is we are mid table because we have been playing like shit. All that aside however even with the misshapen rag taggle injured bunch of hurting sulkers we CAN put together a winning run and rise like the proverbial phoenix.

I wish this thread hadnt been started because the last similar one to it was just before the Arsenal game.

Its a 6 pointer tomorow night and Im not particularly optimistic about it.
Rafa will bring Kuyt back on the right and play Yossi on the left.

I'm optimistic that Rafa will be gone before or by the end of this season.

I feel your optimism maybe misplaced Wodge. I was the same when you didn't post for a while. I hoped it would become permanent.

You can only guess at my disappointment from your Audi, BMW, Porsche.

Not especially.

We've had a false dawn every season fortnight.

I'm not optimistic for two simple reasons;

1) Our squad is ordinary
2) Our manager is slightly mental

We certainly can't get any worse than the Portsmouth display, but I have no doubt we can play that poorly again

Villa will beat us, and beat us easily

I refuse to believe that the loss of Xabi alone has turned us from potential title winners to utter dross. The extensive and continuous list of first team players injured has killed us (inc. the delay in introducing Aquaman) and Rafa's tactical negativity, then affected the confidence throughout the squad.

To turn that around we need to go on an unbeaten run - then I think we will see the return of the swagger and performances that characterised the second half of last season. I'm still very confident of 4th, a good FAC run and a great shot at the Europa League. We are a far better side than Villa, Spurs and Citeh.

Yes but we weren't when I had my realisation on Xmas day.
