New deals for Kuyt & Reina signal full-time role for Dalglish at Anfield- report

LIVERPOOL are ready to hand keeper Pepe Reina a £10,000-a-week pay rise to keep him out of the clutches of Manchester United.

And Dutch star Dirk Kuyt is poised to sign a new deal that will keep him at Anfield for the rest of his career.

It’s the clearest sign yet that caretaker boss Kenny Dalglish WILL be handed the role full-time by American owner John Henry, who is delighted with the Scot’s impact since he replaced Roy Hodgson.

Reina gave Kopites a major scare last week when he refused to rule out a summer move, confessing he is desperate for regular Champions League football. United, searching for a long-term successor for soon-to-retire Edwin van der Sar, head the queue of clubs in the running for one of Europe’s best keepers.

But the Spaniard’s agent Manuel Garcia Quilon is to meet Liverpool’s top brass next month to discuss a pay rise that will see Reina pocket £110,000 a week.

That’s hugely reassuring for Kopites, who have already seen one hero-worshipped Spaniard – Fernando Torres – leave Anfield this year.

And the feelgood factor will be increased by the news Kuyt wants to finish his career on Merseyside.

The Dutchman, 30, said: “My contract has one more season to go after this but there are things happening.

“We have had some talks and I can only say it looks positive.

“I feel at home in Liverpool and I don’t want to leave here.

“It has been a difficult time for everyone at the club with the changes that have happened since last summer but now I can sense something good is happening – I think Liverpol are on the way back.â€

Glad to see we're trying to end this Reina speculation, finally.

Not arsed about Kuyt.

Pepe is a mercenary. All this talk about CL footy and wanting to leave is a ruse to get a pay increase?

He should be staying because he wants to and sees that we're moving in the right direction.

Good, keeping Reina is essential if we want to go anywhere.

Kuyt has been much better when played upfront, and that is where he should finish his career. As a back up to Carroll and Suarez. His versatlitiy is only a good thing aswell.

We need at least 2 new wingers this summer. With pace.

Hahaha!

I'll be proud to have Kuyt spend out his career here.
A loyal servant who loves the club and would run through walls for each of us.
Im honoured when any player says he wants to stay with us and especially in light of the lack of percieved loyalty most were bemoaning from Torres i would expect more fans to be the same.
We cant moan at one player for wanting to leave and decry his loyalty and in the next breath say 'Im not arsed if this one stays'
Obviously if its someone like Poulsen who has no history with the club its different, but Kuyt is one of us and yet many who slated Torres would cast Kuyt out easy.

Well said mate. I can't believe some of the views over the guy, he's great to have in the squad and he's given his all for this club for years, unlike some.

Not really.

Mainly because I didn't slate Torres for his reasons to leave, only the manner in which it was acheived.

He acted the cunt. He played like a cunt for about a year, and then decided to jump ship halfway through the season where we needed him most, so he could play in the Champions League for an ageing Chelsea side who currently can't hit a barn door.

He's a cunt. Contrasted to Kuyt, he's a mega cunt.

[/quote]So you have no interest in player loyalty or loyalty from a club or fans to a player?
I dont understand that mate.

There is no such thing as loyalty in football.

If Kuyt had gone to complete shit or gotten badly injured, he wouldn't be getting a new contract and where would be the loyalty there?

Traore had been at the club for years and years and yet nobody gave a fuck when he left. In fact, people were very happy about it. But Traore had been no less loyal or hardworking than Kuyt.

We the fans only care about the players we like. Squiggs obviously likes Kuyt less than you.

I bet most people wished him well though. As for the Kuyt comparison, well Kuyt has worn his heart on his sleeve since he arrived, giving his all on the pitch everyweek and being integral to some of our best games since he arrived here, while constantly maintaining dignity and respect for the club off the pitch as well as being the model pro.

Traore was just 'here', he performed poorly and didn't endear himself to the fans like Kuyt has. Maybe he did work hard, you mean because he was a defender? Because aside from Istanbul, I don't remember too many games where he ran himself into the ground like Kuyt does most weeks.

Poor comparison really.

Loyalty is an issue which is generally been overly emphasised due to the manner of the departure of Fernando, and to a lesser degree, Mascherano, and it seems to be something to turn to in comfort as we, as fans, try to compensate for our best and most talented players leaving.

I believe we could go out and sign better quite easily, both as a striker and as a wide man, and Dirk isn't going to be squad-status wages; he'll be amongst the top earners I'd have thought and I have my doubts whether that's justifiable.

I have no problem with him staying. I do have a problem, if our squad gets better, that he gets an automatic starting spot during his rough patches (which you highlight too). He's Liverpool, through and through, and should be a part of this team as we rise up the ladder again.

Yeah I agree LTW, I've never really had a problem with that, though the issue mainly is that we don't really have anyone of note that can come in when he's out of form, which is why he's played so much.

All you've done is prove my point Mark whilst desperately trying not to. Kuyt has been good for us, whilst Traore wasn't. Kuyt endeared himself to the fans, whilst Traore didn't, largely because he wasn't very good. Therefore he deserves more than well wishes and "thank fuck he's gone" sentiments.

There are very few examples of real loyalty in football and even then it's usually backed up by the fact that it's beneficial to the club and the fans.

Only good players deserve loyalty in football.

Interesting subject - which ones are they in your opinion? Baresi has to be one of them.

You were saying Traore worked as hard. One of the reasons Kuyt endeared himself was because, like Carra, despite technical limitations, his willingness to constantly punch above his weight and give 110% on the pitch didn't go unnoticed with the fans. That's not really anything to do with quality, it's about attitude and application. Traore, for all his 'nice bloke' demeanour, didn't really do any of that. When he used to chase back his own fuck ups and put in a brilliant last ditch tackle, the fans applauded it, because we want to see players going that extra yard, that's the type of things that are rewarded in football, unfortunately moments of inspiration AND busting a gut were alot less frequent with Djimi than they are with Dirk.

Maybe the club instigated the talks to buy out the stupid release clause.

In all honesty, I think Kuyt's work ethic gets pretty overplayed. I've seen plenty of other players come off the pitch looking half dead from exhaustion and not get the kudos Kuyt seems to from Liverpool fans.

Maybe it's because he looks so old aswell, it's like watching your Granddad coming out of the trenches half the time. 😀

And his mad face. The superman picture comes to mind.

I agree there is something rather endearing about Kuyt. I think it was Vlad that made some analogy about the family's old retriever or something and it was pretty spot on.

It's because of his perceived commitment to the cause that it's become almost heresy at times - less so when he's in one of his horrendous slumps - to say that on footballing ability alone, we could do better.

I don't mind Kuyt getting a new contract as he's a valuable squad member, but it's be nice to imagine genuine quality on either flank leaving Kuyt on the bench and I'm guessing it's that kind of hope that provokes the "not arsed" attitude.

It probably deserves a separate thread this... Etxeberria? Didn't he have the opportunity to move a couple times? And played for free in his last season.

Traore saved our ass in Istanbul. True fact. Legend. As for kuyt I'm delighted he's loyal. As for Reina I hope a pay rise will increase his loyalty.
