Anyone seen Sotiris Ninis play? He is rated very highly, and has spades of pace. He has a 10m euro buy out clause. He could be got for lesser than that, if Panathanaikos are looking to get a deal.

Nothing wrong with Baines. He is probably the best left back in the league after Evra and Cole.
No offence but we should be looking for players who are better or just as good as Evra and Cole.
Coentrao is an option.
.
None taking and I would love Coentrao. He was great in the world cup. There is nothing wrong with Baines though and he is a fine player. Pity we didn't snap him up when he left Wigan.

It was a costly fuck up by Everton really. They had him as a kid but let him go because they didn't think he was big enough.

I agree with Modo about Baines. Not saying he's a poor player, but he is often overrated IMO.
His left peg is fantastic. His delivery from wide areas is the best from any fullback in the league. Other parts of his game let him down though.

He looks a decent, trickery winger, however with him beeing outshoned by players from the Danish Superleague in their two games against FC Copenhagen this Season, as was the case, it doesn't bode too well. Don't think he's ready to make the jump based on the three or four performances I've seen of him in the Champions League of late.

It has to be said though that Panathinaikos was wank and this could've affected their younger players performances. Ninis and Leto (we could've used him to be honest) where their best players however.
We couldn't have used Leto as he was when he left us, Kristian. At that stage he was hopeless, a boy among men.
I know. But he's grown both in stature and class. Looked Pana's best player probably whenever I've seen him and he's a lefty. Not saying we couldn't do better but we sure could use him now.

Love these threads btw. Good one KJ.

1. Eden Hazard
We've simply got to buy him. Seems like one of the biggest talents around and whenever I've seen him play both for Lille and Belgium I've been impressed. He's simply got something about him we haven't seen at the club for ages. Pace, technique, class and well cabaple of doing the unexpected. Should be our prioritized target no. 1 in my opinion.

2. Javier Pastore
Big, strong versatile attacking midfielder whom I believe got a great career lying ahead of him. Classy on the ball, great first touch and vision and the fact he's Argentine and say not Italian fills me with confidence that he can easily take the step from the Serie A to the Premier League. We need to buy him soon if he's not going to end up somewhere well above our prize-range.

3. Mathias Zanka Jorgensen
Instead of splashing the cash on someone well-known, probably over-prized Enlgish player we should go for this young lad who's got all the attributes in the world to become a splendid if not world class defender. Big, strong, athletic, ball-playing defender who's destined for greater things and would be able to push our currrent crop of defenders from day one despite his tender age. Would fetch a fee in the same region as Agger's.

4. Nik Bendtner
I know, not the most popular figure on here and I've got to take my part of the blame for that. SOZ. Still, he's Prem-proven, he's young, he doesn't play for Arsenal at the moment and he's hungry. The fact he's a very big lad, strong in the air and decent on the floor too whilst almost always scoring goals makes him a very good prospect, whether you like his air-head style or not. He's been cheering Liverpool on in a few interviews of late and I'm sure he'd jump at the chance to be united with good pal Agger. Him and Torres has got the potential to be a rather unplayable attack especially if you could add players like Hazard and Pastore to feed them alongside Gerrard and Meireles.

Otherwise a lot of interesting (and well-known) names in here with loads to pick from. I wouldn't mind any of;

Ashley Young, Coentrao, David Luiz, Suarez, Dzeko, Schweinsteiger, Eriksen, Honda, Cissokho, Holtby, Brian Ruiz, Tino Costa, the sprinter from Tranmere, etc.

Good list and a good post, KHL.

It's a shame numbers 1, 2 and 4 are unrealistic for us atm. Hazard is somewhat possible but I can't really see any way of getting Pastore or Bendtner, though I like them both.

I would guess from the PL it would have to be Baines, Santa Cruz and Nzogbia

Then one prospect from abroad.

hopefully not SWP or Bentley ???

Cheers mate.

You are probably right but on the other hand, this is still Liverpool FC we are talking about. I firmly believe that we can still compete with the best when it comes to attracting top talent.

A colleague at the office has thrown in a few interesting names over lunch. Bastos, as has been mentioned already, Maxwell (Barca left-back) and Falcao from FC Porto. The last name made me think of Hulk, could he be another potential prospect perhaps? (I'm not talking the green one here although he'd give us a bit more strength too).

Anyone seen Falcao much, apparently he's a bit of a Tevez type who scores silly ammounts of goals too.

I find it strange that people who say that Roy should be doing a lot better with this squad are not questioning the need of signing four to five players who are at a first team standard.

I think the squad is a lot more average than many of you are prepared to accept, and it's going to be a long process in turning it around.

I think there will be a strong French bias to our signings now with Comolli pulling the strings.

So, Fanni, M'Villa, Hazard and Remy are prob as good as its gonna get.

Winger: Eden Hazard (Lille)
Winger: Ashley Young (Villa)
CB: Neven Subotic (Dortmund)
ST: Falcao (Porto)

Oncy also said Mancini (the Roma Winger) was World Class, which destroyed any credibility he had.

The suggestion that he rated the above names before anyone else is equally as absurd
First off, i didnt say i did rate them before 'anyone' else. I said i rated them before Brendan had heard of them. So:
A)Learn to read.
B)Think before posting.......or just dont bother.

By all accounts it's our best team in twenty years.

But you are right, there is too much meh in our squad and affection covers the eyes

Unsurprising that many of the posters who are heaping most of the blame onto the squad are the same posters who were initially happy/ pleased/ confident that replacing Benitez with Budgie was a going to be a positive move and we'd so well

Now it's the squad's fault.

Laughable in so many ways

Look, I don't wish to absolve Roy's failings in any way, and it's only fair to say that Roy has added to the problem with the signings of Konchesky and Poulson. Defending Hodgson is akin to flogging a dead horse. I've got no interest in it.

The point here is that getting in a new manager is only the start of the process, and the fear is that high expectations will be placed on Mr X to take us back to amongst the European elite and compete for the Premiership all too quickly.

The reality is this squad doesn't need tinkering with, or subtle tactical adjustments to maximise performance - we're not lacking the 'missing piece of the jigsaw'. Instead it needs ripping apart and starting afresh; with a mass exodus either shit or unreliable players - replaced with young, hungry players on sensible contracts, who have been properly scouted, and can learn from our remaining world-class talent (providing we keep it). This is a process which will take at least two to three seasons to get right.

And besides, you spend enough time calling our players "shit" for this not to be an all together new concept.

Of course Roy's atrocious, but you must admit some of the squad have played likes cunts at times?

Johnson early on this year, Lucas for most of this year, and so on?

Yes the manager should motivate them, but £50k plus and (alleged) football ability should not mean you play like a cunt on the pitch either.

Brendan-> Improving the squad and improving on the manager are not two mutually exclusive events, are they? I can't think of any normal Liverpool fan, who would have said we didn't need to improve the squad at the back end of last season. You only need to look at the summer transfer thread.

We needed to sign players for the position that Konchesky and Poulsen/Lucas occupy. We bought shit players. We have needed t o buy wingers for the last 10 years and failed in that, and everyone on this site was crying out for a Striker to support Torres. I don't see how any of that has changed because we changed the manager.

We needed a change from Rafa because he has had his chance for 6 years and proved inadequate (If winning the league title was his remit), but who would have known that Rafa would be replaced with a chump like Hodgson?

Anyway, it was never an either or situation, and we needed both to be taken care off. Now that we have the chance some people are asking for that change....

I don't quite see how you can convert this into an "i told you so" opportunity.

Its one of his special gifts
