I don’t know how everyone is so sure about this guy.

I suppose we're basing our excitement in part, on his youtubes- in which he looks phenomenal- and where the material isn't being stretched out thinly, but there's just tonnes of examples of his amazing play. There are also all the reports about him from people who know their Bundesliga. There was a Bundesliga expert talking quoted the other day on a podcast saying that we don't realise how good he is, and the PL has no idea what's about to hit it– he's just an absolutely incredible player who is going to astound us all. What we can also tell from videos is that he comes alive in the 'transition', which is of course one of Klopp's biggest concerns. He breaks up attacks and then springs counters, often from deep, where his dribbling and acceleration is incredible. He seems to be an all rounder in midfield in terms of being excellent at interceptions – breaking attacks and countering, with wonderful forward passing. So he's got the skillz but he also looks a perfect Klopp player in terms of our system. It isn't a player where you scratch your head wondering how he fits in. His close relationship with Mane should help him settle quickly. All in all, this looks like a very high percentage signing in terms of what he's going to bring to the team.

What is giving you doubts @gene hughes?

I haven't watched his youtube footage, because I can't be arsed and it's usually pointless watching a carefully edited highlights reel.

However, there seems to be an overwhelming and varied amount of very positive reports, and I don't think I've seen anything negative at all, apart from his dress sense (standard), being a bit full of himself (whatever) and stupid red cards.

I can well understand the excitement.

The guy on Kieta's right looks like Sakho.

That kit was from 2006-2007 season and he is supposedly 23 at the moment. I wonder what year that pic was taken?

More accurately: how old is he really?

However, I'm not sure that just because that kit was current in 2006, means teams in Guinea were all sporting the very latest Premier kits at the same time.

Nobody knows. But i find it hard to believe he is 23. I'll bet he's 27.

You have to remember he has already been convicted of using false ID docs:

Keita was accused of producing forged documents from his home country of Guinea in December 2016 and again six weeks later. The state criminal office in Saxony said they were total counterfeits.

Keita was originally fined 415,000 euros ($515,000) for the offences in February, but his lawyer appealed for a lower fine.

That he has been effective in Germany where the standard is lower and anyone good who isn’t with Munich is considered ‘amazing’.

Also worried that his style of play is more suited to the Leipzig’s of this world than the Liverpools. In a lot of his clips he’s breaking against another team but our challenge is more often breaking well organized defenses that are sitting back. Is he any good at that? Or is he just a more skillful oXblood chambermaid?

When I see him in clips I just worry he’s another Leonardson.

I see what you're saying, but he can pass extremely well as run with the ball. He also seems to have a good shot. Last year we were trying to beat park the bus teams with a midfield of Hendo, Wini and Milner--- with the likes of Can or whoever thrown in. All good players, but surely Kieta has much more offensive magic about him for those games than our current midfield options. Don't worry Gene, he's going to be amazing.

As long as Barca don't know when we sell them a 31 year old pretending to be 27 for £400million, I couldn't give a fuck.

I think we scored from more counter attacks than any other team last season. Or close to it.
When we counter attack or counter press, with certain teams we know they’ve still got defenders and midfielders sat back. But it’s still got more space than when 11 are sat back. We’ve not had the midfielders post Coutinho to make the most of those situations. Every time our counter press occurs there are runners doing their thing up front. It’s about both finding them more than what our current lot can, and in joining in those attacks with the incisive one-two’s. Both of which Keita can do.

Yes. I see what you mean. But I’m more worried about teams that sit back. Will he be useful in those situations?

Im with you. We need a lock picker.
We sold Coutinho and no one else can do what he does.
Lallana on his day can but inconsistent and injured too often. Likewise Oxlade-C

We really need a player in that middle 3 alongside Fabinho and Keita to create.
I assume thats what Fekir was for.
So at least we know.

Fabinho
Keita
————-
Henderson
Lallana
Grujic
Oxlade
Milner
Wijnaldum

Thats a strong strong middle. IF we get that gap filled.

Xabi reckons Keita will be boss:

Xabi Alonso recalls competing with a ‘big personality’ when he played against Naby Keita, who he expects to thrive under the tutelage of Jürgen Klopp.

Keita will officially become a Liverpool player on Sunday after a deal was agreed to bring him to Anfield from RB Leipzig last summer.
Former Reds playmaker Alonso opposed the Guinea international twice while representing Bayern Munich during 2016-17 - the final season of his glittering playing career.
And the World Cup winner believes Keita - who was presented with Liverpool's No.8 jersey by its previous incumbent, Steven Gerrard - will prove to be an astute signing by Klopp.
“He’s a big personality. He has the hunger, the will to compete, and after in football terms he’s an all-round midfielder,” Alonso informed Liverpoolfc.com, regarding his memories of facing-off with Keita in the Bundesliga.
“[He’s] Good with the ball, he runs and dribbles very quickly with the ball, but he also likes to make things tick in the midfield.

“I think for this position in front of the holding midfielder, or even as a holding midfielder [or] close to the front three, he can have that role to find the space and to be up there. So [he’s a] good signing.
“He will have to adapt to the idea [of Klopp’s philosophy], but I don’t think that he will have many problems because he’s a great player and very complete.
“[Under] Jürgen you need to do [play like] ‘bang, bang, bang’ and if he gets it, he will do well.”

Keita's first LFC interview: 'I can't wait to get going'
Keita leaves Leipzig having forged a reputation as one of Europe’s most dynamic midfielders over the course of his two seasons in Germany.
The 23-year-old featured in a number of different midfield positions for Ralf Rangnick’s team, but Alonso thinks he is best equipped to fulfil the role associated with his squad number at Liverpool.
“[I see him as] An eight. I would say an eight,” the Spaniard said.
“Sometimes he can play as a six, but I could see him more as an eight behind the three strikers.”

Leonhardsen? No way. He was very good at running without the ball whereas Keita seem to be good on the ball. I actually saw Leonhardsen (and Bjørnebye also) played in a reunion/replay sort of thing against Brazils 98 world cup team a few weeks back. Celebrating the big achievment of Norway which was beating Brazil in the group stage of the world cup(!). Anyway Leonhardsen started the game, took his usual style of making runs and limped of injured with a hamstring after 3 minutes.

Same old then! Leo was a victim of Roy's tinkering with player positions. Brought in as an excellent attacking midfielder, we tried to convert him into a winger despite him having no pace. He was on a hiding to nothing here.

I love the way he seem to break through a whole press level when bringing the ball forward. And with our guys normally countering by default he should have plenty of options ahead of him. He is not a big guy but he is perching the ball nicely from opponents. And his attitude seem to be finding others and look for better option ahead instead of rolling the ball back safely. I have big hopes his head is about being a Liverpool player and not like i.e. Pogba that imagine he is some kind of icon accidentally playing for Man U as his agent told him it was the most lucrative choir.
