Glen Johnson insists he bears no grudges over his Liverpool exit and claims he rejected the chance to stay at Anfield.

The defender made 200 appearances during his six-year stint on Merseyside before joining Stoke City when his contract with the Reds expired in the summer.

Johnson, 30, faces his former teammates for the first time on Sunday when Brendan Rodgers' side visit the Britannia Stadium for the opening game of the season.

However, the former West Ham right-back claims he has no regrets over his departure as he left on his terms.

He said: “I had a very good time [at Liverpool] and enjoyed the majority of it. But I turned down a new contract at the end of the day, so it ended exactly how I would like.

“I met Mark Hughes and everything he had to say was what I wanted to hear. I'm settling in well and I've been made to feel welcome, so it couldn't be going any better at the moment.

“It's just typical my first game [for Stoke] is against my old club. That's football and we'll do what we've got to do. It's my job and I'll treat it as any other game.

“I've been in the Premier League for 12 years – I've got nothing to prove. When I was fit I was in the team, simple as that. There's no problems at all.”

Liverpool missed out on a Champions League spot after a disastrous end to the season that saw them win just one of their final six matches, including a 6-1 drubbing at Stoke on the last day.

Rodgers has brought in Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and James Milner as part of a massive overhaul that has seen skipper Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling join Johnson out the exit door.

But the England international has warned his old club they need to get off to a storming start to the season if they are force their way back into the top four.

He added: “They've made some signings, but not ones that are going to walk straight into the team. They've lost Raheem, who was an important player, so I wouldn't say it's a better squad than last year.

“It will be key for them to get off to a good start, but we want to be difficult to beat and try to improve on last season's points tally. That was a record for the club, so if we beat that we will be happy.”

Good player for us if sometimes frustrating to watch. Good luck to him except when he plays against us!

Either blind or obtuse, but I don't care either way. I'm sure he'll do a 'job' for Stoke, and we won't have to look to the RB position and wonder where he's got to again.

He'll probably have the game of his life on Sunday and then be typically half asleep & positionally shite for the rest of the season.

Not too bitter are we Glen.
'But I turned down a new contract at the end of the day' - yeah, a probably pay as you play or a get paid every time you have a good game contract.

It was a reduced contract at first only on a one year deal, which he wouldn't entertain, so we didn't go back to him. Which is why he came out claiming we hadn't offered him a deal. Now he's saying he turned a contract down after all.

At least we know in real life he's as indecisive as he is on the pitch.

Always had a penchant for going AWOL, but for much of his time with us he didn't get enough credit IMO. There was good defending (and a good deal of effective attacking) to go alongside the bad, and he adapted well to being switched to the left - in fact I thought he was better defensively over on that side. He didn't seem bothered towards the end though, and we've defo upgraded defensively with Clyne (provided Clyne maintains his previous form). I liked Magic and wish him well, once this weekend's game is over and done with anyway.

Strange player. I do think he was underrated at times and I feel his defensive frailties were often over-stated. I witnessed a lot of good defensive work which often didn't receive much credit and his adaptability on the left was a welcome surprise. I wanted Johnson for a long time before he arrived and, although the price-tag was steep, I was happy to see him in red. His first few months were probably best we ever saw from Johnson. His average defending was more than made up by some world-class attacking play. So good was he in those first few months I thought we had next Alves on our hands, possibly even better. Whether Rafa coached it out of him, restricting him or he lost confidence I'm not sure, but that form quickly subsided and despite always showing evidence of being a top level footballer he rarely appeared to influence games in the opposition half like he used to. That combined with lapses in concentration made it easy for critics to pick holes in him as a player.

It was the right time for him to go though, and whilst I haven't seem much of Clyne, I'm confident in the views of others that he will go on to be a more than decent replacement.

As for Johnson, I'm just left with the impression he could have been something a lot more.

I thought he was often better on the left, at least defensively. He had lots of ability but never the concentration to use it...
All in all you'd have to say he failed to justify his price tag, I don't wish him I'll but I'm not arsed he has left, much like the lad himself it seems.
