Wolves owner Steve Morgan claims Liverpool would be debt-free if they accepted his investment offer before George Gillett and Tom Hicks eventually took charge at Anfield.

Morgan abandoned his bid for Liverpool in 2004 after "indecision" from the board, with Gillett and Hicks taking control three years later but having their reign heavily criticised by supporters for the debt taken on by the club.

"I was going to put at the time up to £70million investment into the club," Morgan told Bloomberg.

"It would have been cash into the club. It would have pretty much reduced the debt and got the debt down to nil."

Liverpool's debt has been estimated at £237million and chief executive Christian Purslow has been working on securing outside investment.

The club have to pay interest on their debt, but Morgan added: "If I'd have been there, there wouldn't have been that interest bill."

Morgan has bought Wolves since and is optimistic about the future after promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

"Our plan this year and hopefully next is to establish ourselves in the Premier League and to build," he said.

"But again, it's a step at a time. This year is about trying to establish ourselves and then to take the club forward."

Would he?

To a degree.

Right now, we'd again be looking for owners, but i think we'd be a greater attraction to prospective buyers.

Him trying to buy over Liverpool with his fucking piggybank investment, would be like the owners of this site offering Facebook some cash for ownership.

Morgan wasn't the solution for a club like ours...he's still banging on about it, always had an inflated opinion about what he could do for the club IMHO

He said at the time of the takeover that there was no way anybody could takeover the club without taking on debt.

70 mil invested and no debt sounds very attractive, but I doubt he has the money or the assets to secure a loan for the stadium. no biggie, it seems neither do the yanks.

I might be a bit thick on this one, but most of the debt on the club is the price the club the yanks paid for it.
They paid for it out-right then got a loan with the club as security.
In other words it's like any of us having a mortgage, we are in debt and have to pay interest but the house is still worth what the house is worth, or am I missing something?

regards

Not sure doc, but RBS or any bank, even then would be loathed to loan more than the security was realistically worth.
Three questions.
How much did they pay for the club? What is the debt, and what do we think the club is really worth now?

The cunt wanted to buy us on the cheap and whilst screwing over the shareholders then proclaims that any takeover of LFC woud've debt anyway. ?f he was such a big fan why did he sell up in a hurry and why the fuck did he buy Wolves?
The cunt can fuck right off as far as I'm concerned. He's always been a gobshite of the highest order and even more so during the AGM's.

I agree. I used to go to the AGM's and he loved the sound of his own voice, he was cringeworthy at times.
He threw his dummy out because he has for so long been used to getting his own way.

Back then the 70 Million investment would probably been enough to build a Stadium?
[/quote]

You are probably right Asbo, but it would have built the stadium that was originally planned, which would have been a waste of time, and money a new stadium with an increase of 15,000 seats and no ability to increase the capacity when built. (and that looked like every other cheap stadium)
At least the yanks thought bigger, thankfully. I am happy to wait until we can afford the 70,000+ jobbie

to be honest why do you or anyone care whether shareholders are being screwed out of money (unless of course you are a shareholder).
to be frank I wouldn't give a fuck if shareholders lost a few thousand but liverpool was debt free.

Plus he would have likely employed a lot of his own building company to do it and made himself a tidy sum out of it

If shareholders think they're being shafted they can take legal action which, in addition to being a massive distraction, could end up costing the club millions. It isn't something to be taken lightly at all.

at least you'd have thought Morgan would have the club's best interests at heart. i guess the success of his ownership would've basically come down to whether he could've financed the stadium or not - does anyone know what his plans were for that?

I thought his idea was to inject some quick cash, then sell the club again to someone who would build the stadium.

I think that must be right given the rock-bottom value his offer put on the club, which doesn't suggest he himself had the wonga he'd have needed to get the stadium built.

Well, bearing in mind the value of the club being many millions more than that, "piggy bank" is about right.

The value of the club is about 5 times that max and back it was probably only worth 3 times that.

So I totally disagree.

Not saying Morgan was the answer but to say he was trying to buy into the club with 70M was like coming with your piggy bank is just plain wrong.

Doyle, who in fairness we could do with at present.

No it isn't and you're a nice guy but slightly mental, so let's leave it at that.
