Luka Modric claims Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy threatened to leave him sat in the stands if he pushed for a move away from the club.

The Croatian midfielder has been the subject of sustained interest from Chelsea this summer, with the Blues tabling a £22million bid at one stage.

Spurs have made it clear that they will not be sanctioning a sale, especially to a Premier League rival, and rejected the Blues' offer out of hand.

They have also held talks with Modric regarding his future, with it hoped that they can convince him to ignore the speculation and focus on his duties at White Hart Lane.
The 25-year-old claims that he has been left with little option other than to accept that stance, with Levy having backtracked on previous claims that he would be prepared to discuss a deal.

Solution

"I reminded the chairman of our gentleman's agreement when we were in Dubrovnik last summer and I agreed a contract extension with Tottenham," Modric told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti.

"At that time, I had an open chat with Levy - that if a bigger club came in with a concrete offer, we would consider it and agree the best solution for all concerned.

"Now Levy doesn't want to talk to me and said there is no possibility that I can leave Spurs. He threatened me - he said if I didn't accept the club's stance, they would make me sit on the bench or in the stands."

Quotes of the week
Levy held crisis talks with Modric last week and reported immediately afterwards that the player would remain at White Hart Lane, but the former Dinamo Zagreb man has a different view on the success of the discussions.

"A lot has been published in the press about the meeting with Levy, who gave the public a twisted account of what happened," he added.

"I must say that I am genuinely disappointed about what Levy said to me. He didn't care about what I was telling him. It only convinced me further that I was right to consider moving on to another club.

"I hope that eventually he will understand the situation and that we will reach an agreement and go our separate ways in an appropriate manner."

Dream

Modric maintains that joining Chelsea would be a 'dream' for him, adding: "There is no doubt that Chelsea want me - they sent a concrete offer to Tottenham.

"I know that the new Chelsea boss (Andre Villas-Boas) said he wants me in his team. Of course I am flattered by this interest in me - it's a club that all players dream of joining, fighting for every competition available.

"It wasn't a snap decision - I talked a long time with my family and people whose opinions I respect. I thought about it, weighed it all up, and finally decided this was the best option.

Levy right to say 'No' to Luka move
by Brian Reade, Daily Mirror 9/07/2011

PEOPLE around Luka Modric claim his predicament is similar to Samir Nasri’s and Ashley Young’s.

That he wants to move to a “bigger stage” so it’s only right to let him.

No it’s not. They had (or have) one year left on their contracts, Modric (below) has five.

Which is why Daniel Levy is showing him that contract and asking where it says he can walk out after honouring 17 per cent of it.

Levy isn’t thinking of anything other than Spurs, but if he sticks to this stance he will strike a blow for managers and fans everywhere.

Modric’s agent is now saying all he and Luka want to do is sort things out by sitting down and talking, presumably about how Spurs can win back his loyalty with another pay rise.

I hope Levy does allow his agent to sit down. On an uncomfortable chair he’s pointed at the wall.

And tells him to talk away.

Spot on article that.

A gentleman's agreement to consider an offer? Well it sounds like Levy has considered it and said no so Modric throws his toys out the pram.

All players should have a minimum release clause in their contract and if a club really wants a player, thats what they have to pay.

how the fuck Levy managed to get Modric to sign a 6 year deal on £42k a week last summer i'll never ever know. it was a brilliant piece of work and harry redknapp deserves a huge amount of credit.

I assume Peter is being funny, as the media credit 'next England manager' Harry Redknapp with everything positive & nothing negative.

Christ footballers are cunts arent they.
'Yes i know i signed a 6 year contract last summer and commited to the club that i would spend the next six years here, and yes i know ive only actually been here for ONE of those years so far, but dont you understand that i am being offered more money! Is it not unfair for me not to be allowed to break the contractual agreement we had, the one i signed with such glee that made me a multi multi millionaire just last summer though?'

I hope he dies of monkey aids.

Isn't monkey aids the same as human aids?

"Soccernet: Redknapp rejects Modric transfer request".

At least they should have said "Redknapp emphatically rejects..."

Now the caption is: "Harry Redknapp is still hopeful Luka Modric will remain with Spurs"

Fuck me, just seen sky sports talkign about tottenham, and they're NOT talking to redknapp, but their assistant

i'm still reeling

Of cos, the chairman can make the decision but shouldn't he at least inform the manager? Not sure how Redknapp's comment on the Modric bid will turn out to be though. :-\

Harry Redknapp has revealed he first heard about Sandro’s new contract at Spurs from the TV.

The Brazilian midfielder negotiated a five-year deal with chairman Daniel Levy on Thursday night.

And Tottenham boss Redknapp admitted yesterday: “Yes, I was pleased to see that on Sky Sports News.

“But I never had a clue, I didn’t know anything about it. The first time I saw it was on Thursday night on Sky.

“I don’t get involved in it really. As I’ve said many times, I couldn’t tell you the wages of a single player. I don’t get involved, the chairman does all that.”

But he insisted Levy made the right decision over the 22-year-old. “It’s a no brainer,” said Redknapp. “He’s a player who has come in and done great.

“I think the chairman probably thinks, ‘Get him tied up on a long deal’. I wouldn’t be saying, ‘No, don’t keep him’. He’s a player with a great future.

“He knows I think that anyway. But I didn’t know anything about him signing a new deal.

Redknapp, who takes his players to Wolves this afternoon, said he operated on similar lines before.

He added: “At Portsmouth it [worked the same] more or less. It’s changed over the years.

“Managers don’t get involved any more in negotiations or anything like this. For years and years it’s been that way, which is fine really because I’ve enough on my plate worrying about the team and working with the players.

“Daniel loves [dealing with negotiations] so he just gets on with it.

“The chairman would ask me if there was some doubt over whether I wanted to keep a particular player but in Sandro’s case it was a young boy who will be a top player.”

However, Redknapp did not agree with Levy’s decision to turn down Chelsea’s £40million bid for Luka Modric.

The Croatian is in line to start at Molineux and Redknapp said: “I’ve always been brought up with the belief that if people don’t want to play for your club then you move them on and bring in someone who does.”
