Modern Football Is Rubbish.

If I really wanted to I could write my longest post ever in here, and of course coloured boots would be in there.

I assumed others would say it too (along with divind and poncing around etc) though so I stuck to the constant stream of unpunished foul throws 😉

I actually started this thread in the hope that you would put all your gripes out there, George.

Coloured boots
Gloves
those scarf things
keepers in tracksuit bottoms
keepers with short sleeves
long sleeves under short sleeves
diving
play acting
asking the ref for a card
swearing at the linesman
grabbing the ball when you think you've been fouled before the ref blows for a foul
the fact footballers are interviewed despite being unable to speak properly
the money they get
the fact we don't win the league
man united
barca play "great football" that we should all copy
andy gray and richard keys
talk sport
tabloid stories
deadline day on ssn
andy burton
no one caring when shit clubs go bust, but going on about big clubs all the time
ticket prices
ing-er-land
platini and blatter
fans thinking they are a tactical genius
people trying to be impartial to sound clever
SOS
fc united
green and gold scarves over official merchandise
most football chants
people slagging off their own players on a personal level
chalkboard type analysis
co-commentators
advertising/sponsorship
the champions league (it's the european cup)
football started in 1992
slavery
kissing the badge
fans with no knowledge of the history of their own club
barca players attitudes
penalties when they stop during the run up
foul throws not being called
players not standing 10 yards away from a free kick
the wall creeping forward during a free kick
throw ins being taken 10 yards further forward than they should be
dalglish swearing was apparently the same as rooney
why aren't players booked for diving enough
knocking the ball out for a fake injury
fans who have played champ manager so know it all
the notion that it means more to you if you're a shit team/nation
people belittling the FA cup
interviewers answering their own question within the question itself
religion still being brought into football
racism
young fans chanting about things they know nothing about (munich, hillsborough, etc)
footballers thinking they are above the law
playing semi finals at wembley
people thinking if we lose it's the worst moment of their life. it's not.

My answer (along with most of the things Rosco has posted) is the need these days a lot seem to have to be an expert or armchair pundit than a fan.

Too many fucking experts and tactical geniuses these days. To many people quick to critiscise their own team to be seen as a superfan or to try to microanalyze every facet of the game and ignore things like goals or PASSION in your team.
Microanalyzing every aspect of every game is lots of fun a big reason why I watch football. Even going over games we've lost holds great interest to me. It's all in the details.

George- Bravo !

Neil- erm....

What?

If George replied with that comprehensive list, we could of just said ditto. He's right on the money!

Haha SaintGeorge67!

Just to add to those already said:

- When players score, they point with their thumbs to the name on their shirt.
- Names on boots/gloves.
- Constantly Spitting.
- Players selected in the first eleven/purchased for outrageous amounts of money, based on reputation.
- Agents.
- Blaming the referee for defeats. Yes, they make mistakes, like you. But sure it's the easy thing to do to blame someone else especially when that person is on their own.
- When they receive a tackle, some players stop and throw their arms up expecting a decision to go their way. Get up and get on with it...Dirk Style. Or deal with it with the opposition player.
- Smug Referees.
- Celebrating when a fellow professional gets a yellow or red card.
- When they are treated on the field, the victim of the injury having to go off and then brought back on, therefore the perpetrator's team benefits with a man advantage for a minute.
- Players getting a round of applause from their supporters when they head the ball back to the 'keeper or switching the ball from right-back to left-back (vice versa)....Wowee!
- Kids going for millions of pounds.

One of the worst things about modern football is fans who moan about modern football.

Let's get it all off our collective chest.

What gets on your tit end about the game, these days ?

I'll start....

All that basketball-style running about in the penalty area as a corner is being taken, and, also, all the shirt-pulling and extra nonsense that never gets punished.

GO !
Neil lennon. Gobby classless ginger prick.

Tippy tappy walk it the fuck it without having a fucking belt like teh good old days where it looked so much better to score a sexy 30 yard screamer at the death than it did some shit dink.

Ball boys with towels as if it's a tennis break, so that some plodding trebuchet can hurl it into the box.

Watching FIFA talk about the insufficient incremental steps it could have made 10 years ago easily, just to get people to shut up until they give up on doing anything.

People saying that player y is the new player x, when player x is only 21.

Watching refs in an impossible situation take 3 minutes to sort out an incident, then listening to the commentators say that replays would destroy the flow of the game.

Caring about getting 4th place.

Some of the best analysis about football coming from the financial times, not a sporting publication.

More elaborate goal celebrations, less and less joy.

Fixture fatigue.

Goalies don't have to be insane anymore.

Extravagant goal celebrations are a tad premature. You perform four backward somersaults, tear off your shirt to reveal a message to your girlfriend, climb into the crowd etc. etc. Then you lose 2-1. :🙂

Footballers being booked for taking off their shirts and showing a tribute to their dead father underneath.

If you strip off and run to the fans...fine you go in the book.
If you reveal a t-shirt of your father and fall weeping into a teamates arms...no booking.

Mike jones will argue he had no choice. But the reality is he's a fucking coward.

For me, probably the worst part is how winning trophies has been so devalued that coming 4th from bottom in the Premiership has become more important than winning the FA Cup, the Carling Cup or the UEFA Cup.

Agreed oncy, was just about to make that cohen post.

Oh, and another thread has just reminded me of another for the list.... Soccer AM. Basically everything about it.

I know... but surely a trophy is a trophy, right? I just think it's sad that Premiership survival has become more important than winning a Cup. So what if you're relegated? If you're a well ran club, promotion will be a possibility again but a chance of winning a trophy may not come round for a very long time.

Back in 2005, I remember reading on Koptalk somebody saying we should concentrate on beating Everton to qualify again for the CL rather than trying to win it that season. Surely, that's just ridiculous?

Just about!

And I'm 30 imminently!

I do feel I was born a generation or so too late though.

Football and pubs in particular seemed much better back then. I'm probably just a nostalgic fool...
