MK Dons v Liverpool Match Thread - LEAGUE CUP

Cheers for that.

No worries. After all the hype I was quite excited to see him, and you'd hope that against defenders at this level he'd be capable of giving them a hard time, but they dealt with him pretty comfortably for the majority of the game.

Elliott on the other hand was causing problems. He looks a talent. And a twat. But I'm willing to overlook the coiffurial catastrophe if he plays like that...

Stephen Wright's ratings on ESPN had Lovren at a 9/10. What in the holy fuck match did he watch? Lovren had a couple outstanding blocks but was largely out to lunch, playing strikers onside and not commanding the backline at all. I'd give him a 4 if I had a ratings column. Would have been punished by Premier League sides.

Him and Gomez both...and Lallana nearly got punished a couple of times - I'm not convinced by him in the holding role; cute little Cruyff turns leading to losing possession just outside their box ain't so bad, but just outside ours?

*shudder*

Yeah, Gomez didnt pull up trees either.
Lallana looked solid in this game but only because the pace was so tepid and everyone seemed content to go sideways and backwards. Like you, I think he'd get caught in possession against a good team.

Beginning to think Brewster needs to go out on loan and play some games. Hes at a critical point in his development and hes currently not good enough to get minutes playing for us as hes well below the required standard.

Is this kid really SIXTEEN?

Fuck me. He looked like the first teamer put in to guide the kids. Watched the highlights and he was everywhere.

What a gem .

He was perpetual movement throughout, no wonder he was feeling a bit of cramp by the end.

I thought this game played out like many games this season - we were worthy winners, but we weren't clinical and gave up a lot of good chances.
Granted, it's better to be saying this after wins (which has been the case bar Napoli and the CS) - but I hope we start tightening things up more.

Kellehr - sorry if I spelled that wrong. He doesn't seem to have a great presence in the box, but he made one good save and one great reaction one ... very good distribution with both feet and a clean sheet. Not bad and once Alli is back, we should loan him out to get consistent game time.

Hoever - didn't think he was great defensively but so calm on the ball and took his goal brilliantly.

Gomez - disappointing for me. He is clearly lacking game time but I thought he'd be more 'turned on'. Some nice interceptions but overall, not great.

Lovren - besides one brain fart, was the more imposing of the CBs.

Milner - MoTM for me. Excellent play throughout.

Keita - Very good introduction to the season. Not sure what game the mirror lads were watching, but he was positive in possession.

Ox - Disappointing. Didn't seem turned on either until the second half, where he started to be a bit more assertive and had a great effort on goal.

Lallana - meh? Dunno. Recycles possession well but I just don't see what he can add to this team.

Jones - outside of the box, he's smart, works hard and passes the ball well. In the box though I feel like he struggles more often than not to make the right decision - be it making the run or pass etc. He's an exciting talent though.

Elliot - fucking hell. Kid is smart, talented and has a great motor. Unlucky not to have two goals (he should have scored both) and was a constant thorn all over the pitch. He'll be getting appearances later on in the season from the bench if it he keeps this up.

Brewster - No goals, but I thought his work rate and never putting his head down was impressive. He was constantly looking for the ball, and trying to get involved ... and in games like this, where the ball isn't finding you in the box, that's what you need from the Bobby position.

It's "only" the League Cup, but where there is football, there will be RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRatingssssssssss!!!!!!!!!

We won with a very, very "ressies" line-up, only Milner and Gomez are really that close to being proper first XI players, with support from Lallana, Chamberlain, Lovren and Keita, and a generous helping of youngsters. MK Dons did threaten more than once or twice, with our keeper called into action in the later stages of the game, but overall we certainly deserved the victory. It was, however, a mixed bag on the performance front.

Kelleher (7) ~Missed one ball in, but otherwise did well, and looked confident. Two good saves later on will please him and his manager.

Hoever (7) Did well enough defensively, even if he was less than assured in the attacking part of the pitch. But scored a lovely thumping header, so an extra point for you my lad!

Lovren (5) Really wobbly start and looked like he'd been taken out of a leaky garden shed after a year, clanking about and blinking in the glare of the lights. But he did get better and threw himself in front of a goal-bound shot later on to preserve the clean sheet. But would not be happy with him starting.

Gomez (6) A couple of moments when he seemed out of position, and was beaten for skill once or twice, but we also saw glimpses of that smooth, Rolls Royce acceleration as he swooped in to win possession and stride away. Getting back to his best, but I still don't want him at full-back.

Milner (9) Man of the Match. Scored one (bit lucky, but he hit it hard), made the other, and generally bossed affairs in that granite-like Milner way, while giving away nothing defensively. Brilliant.

Lallana (5) Hmm. If we're scoring him as a holding midfielder, then probably a 4, as he simply has zero fucking defensive awareness, but he kept the ball moving well, and he produced a few lovely passes and the usual clever use of space and close control. Can he play as the deepest midfielder in the league? Hmm. Nah, not on this evidence.

Keita (5) Some nice touches here and there, but still looks as if he's expecting a monster to pop up out of a trapdoor on the pitch at any moment, he's so tentative. Made a few forward runs, but as usual overran the ball and lost possession. But he was still quite busy and bright in flashes, even if his overall contribution was ordinary.

Chamberlain (5) Made a couple of bursts forward and one vicious shot struck a post, but he spent most of the game wandering about, as if unsure where he was supposed to be, or where to run. He'll need to improve a lot to get back into the team, as there wasn't enough end product or brains on show here. Mediocre.

Jones (6) Pretty good, considering his age and experience, he worked hard, showed a few touches of neat skill, and wanted to test the keeper. Nothing amazing, but decent showing.

Elliot (8) Now this is how to make an impression. Quick, aggressive, lovely touch and some great vision. He looked like he belonged and totally outshone the £90m pairing of Keita and Chamberlain. Should have scored though, as his finishing let him down. And he's so one-footed it's laughable.

Brewster (4) Just couldn't get involved. Made some runs, but they got wider and wider as he tried to find space, and he was barely a threat. One glimpse of speed and skill was all there was. And that's not enough. Poor.

Missed the game but just watched the highlights. Looked like Milner was head and shoulders above everyone else, Elliot is going to be a baller when he cuts that shit hair off and Hoever took his goal really well. Senior midfielders and centre backs looked worryingly poor though

I take it Brewster was as anonymous as the highlights show?

He was indeed. Didn't get enough service from the midfield, but he also took himself away from areas where he could score, so had no goal threat at all.

Saw the game yesterday, and that kid is going to be a world super star Allah willing that he stays healthy. His postioning, passing and runs were amazing, and to be honest i got the impression he is a better reader of the game than some of the senior players that were playing. I dont think they actually kept up with him in that game.

I hope we can keep our success going coz this kid will be wanted by the rest of the Euro giants.

Holy shit I just saw that Hoever is still just 17 years old! He is some talent wow. To be at that level at 17!

It was nothing like that. Thought they all played really well, especially the young ones.

Harvey Elliott is unreal, he’s absolutely class.

He really does look to be quite a special talent, and the fact that he's a Liverpool supporter hopefully will give him extra motivation to knuckle down and do everything to make this work. If he has the application the boy is going to be a star, no doubt about it. If he develops his finishing, he really could be extraordinary.

That kid is ready for the first team or main squad, the finishing will come with actually playing.

Could it be this rule?
6.2.2 in the case of a Premier League Club, one who would be registered and eligible to participate in a Premier League match commencing at the same time and on the same date as the Competition match in accordance with the Premier League Rules, or would have been but for the operation of Premier League Rule U.1.1 (Squad List).
This our squad list:

Can't see who's missing. Thought it was Chirivella, but he's there.

Then there's this rule which I just find funny:

6.5 Each Club shall play its full available strength in and during all Cup Competition matches, unless some satisfactory reason is given. The Board will from time to time issue a policy as to what constitutes 'full available strength'. In the event of the explanation not being deemed satisfactory the Management Committee shall have power to impose such penalties as they shall think fit. The provisions governing disciplinary matters in relation to the Competition are contained in Rule 24.
