S'all the rage in The Times. He's refusing to sign a contract with City and we're leading the chase for him.

Super player Milner. We'd do very well to get him.

YES! Its only been 7 years since I was excited that Rafa was trying to sign him from Newcastle.

He and Silva absolutely ripped us open in that 20 minute spell after half-time in the City game at Anfield last year. He's a really really good player.

Yep, I agree with that. But, you and I have been banging this drum for years (I checked back a little, found a horrible post where I championed Ashley fucking Young in 2009).

He'd add work rate, pressing, intelligence, composure, and goals to our side. We actually need some old heads to add to our young squad. Add to that the experience winning titles. We'll absolutely need that next year. I would have taken him for 12M in 2007, and I'll take him for free and on probably big wages now.

I love that he has embraced the boring cunt persona on twitter. Pretty humorous.

For arguments sake say we sign milner and shaquri. We then have

Milner
Shaquri
Coutinhio
Lallana
Sterling
Lazar
Ibe
Origi
Plus another striker

All trying for 2 spots, Assuming strurridge is fit. I am also hoping we have got rid of mario, lambert and borini. If not you can add them to the list of players above fighting for 2 places.

The point I am trying to make is, do we really need milner? We don't want another high earning squad player. We should be looking to strengthen goalkeeper, striker and a quality centre mid.

I think we are about 7 years to late for milner.

I'm not at all surprised by this - it would almost seem like an obvious choice to replace Gerrard.

This sounds too good to be true, sadly. Expect Ayre & Co. to somehow screw this up and we only get Delph in the end.

This would be terrible. "Refused to sign a contract" my ass. More like City want an ageing player off their books and his agent knows there are stupid clubs like us who continually fall for it.

He'd be a good signing considering he can play pretty much anywhere ahead of the defence, and play it well, also as has previously been mentioned, an old, experienced head is very welcome. Two questions though, surely he's leaving City because he wants to start most games, and surely he's on a bucket at City, can we offer him though two things?

In fact, I'll do it for you, here's a few of my past posts on Milner:

When you watch him for City, he usually does what everyone around him doesn't (usually when they are having a bad game), he'll be less flashy, no nonsense, but what he does do is put in a good pass or a cross that actually picks someone out in a dangerous position, as opposed to be blessed with all the skill and ability in the World, and producing FA.

The whole argument against him seems to be settling on the fee rather than his actual talent, anyone with eyes who enjoys watching the game can see his quality. Forget the fee, the market and our own financial clout at the time helped dictate the fee. People might say similar about Milner, he's a good player and has contributed heavily to what City have achieved, he might not be as pleasing on the eye as some players, but his end product is always there.

He is, I can't understand why he's so underrated around most parts. He's a clever, no-nonsense player and very effective. He'd be a really good signing for us, even more so for Arsenal because he's exactly the sort of player and attitude they lack.

Milner is not shit. Fucking hell.

It's more a factor that he wants to play consistently in centre midfield. He's shunted all over the place for City, which does show his quality, but at 29 years of age he wants to be more than just a utility player.

Interesting post, fairly put, but I don't agree. Ibe isn't here yet (and probably won't be till the summer at the earliest), we haven't signed Shaqiri or that other striker yet (plus given our record with transfers it's far from certain we will at all) and the 5 players that leaves on your list are contesting 4 places, not just 2. We clearly need more than that for the rest of the season and Milner, besides being very consistent, is possibly the most versatile player in the Prem. I don't share dantes' cynicism about why he might be leaving Citeh - it's equally likely he's naffed off with not holding down a regular place despite always performing when given the chance.

Fair enough, could Henderson and Milner work well as a midfield two?

Against certain teams, possibly. It would depend on the formation we played I think and the personnel in defence. Milner is very very good at pressing and harrying the opposition, so if both he and Henderson are playing well we could potentially have a midfield adept at winning the ball higher up the pitch.

I still think we need to spend on a Matic-type holding midfielder though. Oliver Kay in his Times article says that we're pursuing Milner as part of a revamp of the midfield - so if that's the case it would be interesting to see what else is involved in the revamp.

I cant remember the last time I saw him play but I still think he could be an upgrade on Gerrard next season.

I've always thought he was shit but then I know fuck all about football..

He's a very good player. Works hard, can play in just about every position and scores a few goals.
Would be a great free transfer.
Being 29 doesnt matter at all. When Gerrard leaves we need some experienced players.

He gets about 40ish games for City each year which should be enough to tell you about his quality.

You're displaying memory loss and also making statements that Milner is an upgrade on Gerrard. It's a cause for medical concern in my opinion.

Although different players, cant help thinking of joke hole with this transfer.

Ageing England midfielder, looks good when played in good team, all he needs is a run in the team. However, a large part of game his game is based on being high energy, which surely is going to decline as he hits his 30's

On the right wages he could be a good pick up.

Annoys me that people don't rate Milner. England fans especially want a team of ronaldos. You need millers around your 3 stars. Did nobody see Germany in World Cup. They had a few milners.
