Liverpool will sign James Milner and eye Man City teammate Stevan Jovetic

LIVERPOOL are convinced they have won the race to sign James Milner and are already planning more signings this summer.

By Steve Morgan and Steve Millar / Published 25th April 2015

Arsenal and Roma are also in the race to sign the Manchester City star, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
But an Anfield source described it as a "done deal" that Milner will choose the Reds instead.
The 29-year-old has been promised that he will get the chance to play in his preferred midfield role at Liverpool and that appears to have swayed him.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini has repeatedly stated he expects Milner to sign a new contract at the Etihad.
But Liverpool officials are confident he has decided to turn his back on City and look for a new start on Merseyside.

Liverpool first tried to sign Milner from Aston Villa in 2010 but he snubbed them to join City in a £26m transfer.
Milner has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup at City but is unhappy with his role in the team.

KOP DEAL: Milner looks certain to join Liverpool [GETTY]

“We need to bring in a few players to improve the starting eleven but it certainly won't be as many as last summer. It will be more settled”
Brendan Rodgers
He has often been overlooked in big games and has rarely been used in his favoured position of central midfield.
Liverpool could offer him the chance to partner Jordan Henderson, who has just signed a new deal, in exactly that position following Steven Gerrard's decision to quit the club.
Brendan Rodgers has also earmarked Stevan Jovetic as his No.1 striker target but insists he won't spend, spend, spend in a bid to capture Champions League football next season.
There will be no repeat of last summer when the Liverpool boss went cash crazy, splashing £116 million on nine new signings.
Rodgers has identified just three positions he needs to address - goalkeeper, a central midfielder and a striker with Manchester City hit-man Jovetic a £16 million target.
The Kop chief tried to sign Jovetic before he joined City almost two years ago and was hugely impressed how the Montenegro international handled himself when preliminary moves were made.

Rodgers has never lost interest and with Jovetic failing to establish himself under Etihad boss Manuel Pellegrini the time would now be right to bring the proven striker to Anfield.
It's been reported that PSV Eindhoven goal-getter Memphis Depay flew to Liverpool last week for secret talks but either Manchester United or City will be his next destination.
Rodgers insists that Liverpool demand quality and not quantity for next season with captain marvel Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Brad Jones leading the list of players heading for the exit.
Iago Aspas, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini, Rickie Lambert, Sebastian Coates and Luis Alberto are expected to follow.

But Rodgers is keeping a tight grip on the purse strings to find his limited replacements.
Rodgers said: "The likes of Stevie are moving on and that's something we have to deal with. But I think the nucleus of the squad will hopefully be the same next season.
"We need to bring in a few players to improve the starting eleven but it certainly won't be as many as last summer. It will be more settled.
"We have to look to improve the team and that's going to be critical for us."

Hopefully the keeper will be a cheap backup.

I don't think Mignolet is the long term answer by any means, but (assuming sterling doesn't leave for big money) then our (assumed limited) funds will be better spent elsewhere.

I like milner, he's a fantastic player. I'm not sure how many seasons he's got left at this level though.

With those 'squad' players leaving we need a couple of filler players too.

I think this is going to be the transfer window we get 'right'. A few quality additions and we will be challenging for the title again. Markovic, Sterling, Ibe and Moreno will all have gained valuable experience from this season and will be ready to go all guns a blazing come pre-season.

Yeah, Milner would be a very good signing.
Jovetic sounds like those expencive flop we've made loads of in the past and should try to avoid in the future.

If we think Sturridge is injured quite often then what do we make of Jovetic, I think his injury record is worse than our own sick note

There's nothing wrong in principle with taking a player who couldn't get to be a regular in one of our would-be rivals - after all, we got Sturridge for that reason - but they need to be young enough and good enough in terms of potential. I don't honestly know enough about Jovetic, but from the odd performance I've seen he's not struck me as a player who'll improve us.

Everyone seems to want Jovetic since he was good against us once in European competition. Fellaini was also boss against us in Europe before he moved to Everton but doesn't seem to get the same love.

At some point you just have to look at the big picture and notice at 25 having been in two top leagues for the past seven seasons he's scored 43 goals.

And I agree with what Macca says there's nothing wrong with taking a player from a place he's not appreciated when you know there's more to them, but I can't see what there is with Jovetic.

The only scenario that you could hope for is a similar one that RVP went through, Mid twenties plagued with injuries but he had a couple of years where he was unusually fit and scored loads. But even taking that as a scenario Jovetic has never scored a goal every two games anywhere, but RVP did it overall

Milner's been known as jack of all trades, often played as a defensively sound wide player. However, i think his future might be as a more disciplined centre mid. Like Lucas but fitter, more mobile. I wouldn't be averse to seeing him play behind Henderson and Coutinho in a three, which also has the versatility to be a two-one midfield during games. Could also play behind Can, Henderson and Coutinho in a diamond.

He'll probably be more consistent than Gerrard has been in the last few seasons whilst also allowing our better players to play their own game, something which has been an issue when Gerrard has started recently, particularly this season.
There's £250,000 a week coming off the wage bill this summer with the departures of Gerrard and Johnson and Milner's an experienced player with medals in the bag - exactly the type we lack.
A solid right back shouldn't cost a great deal. Primary targets should be a shit hot left sided player and a similarly skilled striker.

If we get him, my bet is he's not going to be played in just the one position. CM may well be where he first gets into the side, but Brendan likes to switch his players around anyway and will find it especially tempting to do that with Milner, plus there are always injuries and maybe suspensions to cover.

Jovetic's injury record is a worry. We cannot afford to populate our squad with players with the injury record of Sturridge, Lallana, and Jovetic and then complain about bad luck.

Milner's off the ball movement is also excellent. He has been used as a false nine earliee this season due to injuries and did well holding the ball up and bringing the other midfielders into play.

He is an intelligent, versatile player and one I'd love to have in our side. My only concern is how many years he has left at the top level - so my endorsement of his purchase would be dependent on his transfer fee and wages.

Jovetic is pretty uninspiring. If you struggle for goals in a side supplied by Silva and Toure then you don't get much respect from me.

Milner signing makes a lot of sense and ticks all the right boxes.

Its such a pity we didn't get Milner when he was leaving Newcastle.

I'm such a massive fan of his and what he does on the football pitch. There is an air of intelligence with every movement. I'd love him here. He'd instantly be on the same love plane as Henderson, fitSturridge and Coutinho for me.

Both players I wanted us to sign before they went to Citeh.
Jovetic was ace in Italy. Especially when we played against him (remember when we were in Europe every season?).
He'd be a risk now, but who the fuck knows?
We are capable of making him a highly paid flop or a rejuvenated brilliant talent.

Milner isn't exactly a world beater, but he's consistently solid, he gets the basics right and he has passion. Some of the characteristics we're seriously lacking at the moment.

Jovetic? Nah.
