Milan Jovanovic claims he does not want to play for Serbia until he wins back his place at Liverpool.

The forward, who moved to Anfield on a free transfer from Standard Liege, has lost his place under Roy Hodgson.

He insists he is prepared to stay and fight at Liverpool and claims that takes priority over playing for his country.

Speaking after Serbia's 1-0 win over Bulgaria last night, Jovanovic said: "Did I go to the airport to wish my friends good luck before the game in Sofia? No, because I didn't want to be in the spotlight for nothing. This isn't how I do things.

"I am 29 years old and I have a career which is quite good.

"But I know when I am not playing well and that is why I told my national coach that I don't want to be called up until I am playing first-team football at Liverpool.

"This is the honest thing to do and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Just start him up front for fucks sake. He's full of running and strong. plus he might win us some free kicks by diving

He's been pretty meh on the wing though, would like to see what he can do upfront, I'm not convinced though in any way, he looks like Rafa's typical seasonal 'free'.

don't get me wrong, he looks meh, but he must have been top scorer for a reason. Plus the way we play i'd begrudge to call them wingers, so no wonder he's struggling

I wouldn't expect him to tear up the league up front but he's clearly not a winger in a 4-4-2 (or same with withdrawn striker) as we have played much of this year. If he's not on the side in a 4-3-3 he should be up front or not at all. We have far too many players who aren't good enough to bang them in up front, aren't good enough on the wingand, oh who am I kidding, just not that good period.

Although I genuinely like his attitude and hope he gets a chance up front.

Wow. What a refreshingly decent attitude.

I still quite like him. He's big, fast and strong, and he does have a brain on him too, but, like Riera, he seems to disappear all too easy in many games. So he's got to sort that out.

Why is it always the shithouses that have a moral compass?
lol probably to compensate for being a shithouse.

I want to like him but his running style reminds me of Milan Baros and as soon as he gets the ball I'm waiting for him to run towards the corner flag. Fast and powerful but still towards the corner flag.

Riera showed loads more for us than Jova has ever done mind.

Has Jova actually played one good game so far? I can remember a few decent ones but has he had any good ones too?

I know he's been played out of position but still football-wise he looks a poor mans Riera at best. Not really blaming him though as it was just obvious from the start he'd struggle with the giant leap from the Jupiler League to the Premiership aged 29.

Maybe he'll come good but I really doubt it.

He had a good game against the Arse in our opening fixture. It can't be easy for anyone coming into our team at the moment.

You are right and maybe I'm beeing a bit to harsh on him after all. I just don't think he's suited for the wing-role at all as he's lost far to much possession outthere.

He could be used as back-up for Torres I reckon.

I agree Jovanovic hasn't taken his chances when played wide left but could be an option as back-up for Torres, or alongside him as target man if we play two up front. One way or the other, I wouldn't write him off until he's had some kind of opportunity to play in his most familiar position.

Sometimes you've just got that feeling that a player will never make it.

That's the feeling I've got with regards to Jova. I've actually believed that ever since we signed him but I'm hoping to be proved wrong of course.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave (for Belgium) come January mind.

He's 29 already. and doesn't seem to improve much.

I don't think he's got much of a bright future at Liverpool.

Serbia coach Vladimir Petrovic has called for Milan Jovanovic to be given more game time at Liverpool.

The former Standard Liege player endured a slow start to his Anfield career during former boss Roy Hodgson's rocky reign, and has featured just twice for the club since Kenny Dalglish took over as caretaker manager.

He came to Merseyside with a reputation as one of Serbia's most talented players and started all three of their World Cup group matches last summer, scoring the winner against Germany.

His lack of competitive action with the Reds has seen him slip out of Petrovic's first XI this season, but he put in a hugely impressive display in last night's victory over Northern Ireland after being sent on for the second half.

After 45 minutes Northern Ireland were 1-0 up, but in the second period, and in no small part due to Jovanovic's energy, the hosts hit back twice to take the points.

Petrovic told Press Association Sport: "I am not surprised by Milan. I know he is a player who can play at a very high standard.

"It is impossible that such a good player would forget how to play football.

"He is special and he had a special desire to play for us here.

"In the past he has been one of our best players and I think he deserves more chances [with Liverpool]. If he gets chances he will soon be on the same level again."

Asked if Jovanovic should consider leaving Anfield in the summer, Petrovic was less forthcoming, adding: "Only he will answer whether he should leave or not. I don't want to speak about that."

Would've liked to see how he'd have fared as a striker but with no more games left for us to experiment, I suppose that's it for his career here then. We should be able to move him for a fee though, at least back to Belgium, given his success there.

Did he really turn down a 6m move to Wolfsburg in january?

If so, can someone please kneecap him?

He'll be off in the summer, no doubt.
Here's hoping.

Tbf, Jova has kept fairly quite, throughout his time here, he's not the greatest, he's Rafa's annual shit free transfer, but I wish him well.
