They're talking to him now on BT sport and I actually feel sorry for him.

He's just saying he always wanted to come back to Liverpool and it never worked out and his hamstring was permanently damaged at 19 so full pace never came back.

I think this has all been said before but he seems like a human with a personality this time.

Yeah I seen that segment.

Basically said when he left, he agreed with Benitez and the chairman that he'd come back after two years.

Said Madrid chairman Perez fucked him over, gave him a straight choice between Newcastle or stay at Madrid. Madrid wouldn't accept Liverpools bid of £10m

Said his contract at Newcastle had a clause which allowed us to buy him back. But his injury scuppered a deal.

Following season. Suarez blocked his route back, so was left with a choice to either stick at Newcastle or leave to try and win a trophy.

Says he loves Liverpool, it will always be his club, and was gutted he could never find a route back.

Also said he was done at 19 and a half, was running with 1 leg not at 100%.

I can still see in my mind that moment when he got the hamstring tear - it was brutal. He clearly felt all was fun and possible before that. After it, he was a fearful athlete, always worried about injury. And he was frustrated when he wanted to return to LFC. It just doesn't explain or excuse his readiness, even eagerness, to embrace the mancs when he went there. For someone so precociously adept at PR, he made one almighty mess of navigating his way through that political minefield. But I don't really mind him these days. He's just not that interesting.

I'd heard about the film aversion before - he always talks about movies like ordinary people talk about lethal viruses or earthquakes or Richard Madeley - but the tea and coffee thing is new to me. I wonder if he uses pens, or even knows how to write.

His face looks odd now aswell....

He always looked like a kid, now just a 40 year old one. It's kinda like Michael J Fox or that different strokes fella

How is it even possible for him to have money troubles. Fucking hell that's pathetic.
You obviously don't know any heavy gamblers.

I don't mind Owen at all. Loved the 60 mins with Owen show he did for LFC TV.

Didn't mind him going to Madrid either.

Just a shame he didn't come back

I minded him initially pretending he was thinking about staying when that was clearly bullsh!t, though at least he didn't rob the club of a fee like McMoneyman did.

As for coming back, he could have if he'd forced the issue with Madrid. They were keen to get him off the wage bill and he could have made a return to LFC happen if he'd told them he'd only come to us.

I remember it too. I believe that was in the Roy Evans era. With wisdom of hindsight, Evans had played him too much in his desperation for results.

I think nowadays, Premier League clubs are more careful about how they develop the talents of teenagers.

Fuck was Evans still around then?

I thought it was in Geds time.

Just checked it was Ged not Evans in charge that season

Owen did his hamstring in April 1999. That season had started off with the ridiculous "joint managers" fudge, but you are right in that Evans had gone by November 1998. You are right, Houllier carried on where Evans had left off with flogging a teenager to death.

His version of events was that he did say that. For which he was told ok, stay at madrid.

Reading between the lines basically being told he'd be playing for Real Madrid B. If he didn't go to Newcastle. In a world cup year.

He must have earned at leat 30 million over the years: crazy to think he can broke. How big were the bets and did he ever win big

Not sure I buy what Owen has said. He was still pretty good for us until he left 5 years later.
