English press reporting on the rumour:

Roma have set their sights on Dirk Kuyt and hope to tempt Liverpool with an exchange for Philippe Mexes.

Anfield boss Roy Hodgson is unlikely to countenance an offer for the Holland international while he remains short of attacking options, but reports in Rome claim Kuyt is open to a move to Italy.

Rafa Benitez remains keen to take Kuyt to Inter Milan, but Liverpool put off the European champions by demanding a prohibitive £20million in the summer.

Roma can’t even offer half that and a straight swap for France centre half Mexes looks far from value for money as the 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

Kuyt is under contract at Anfield till 2012
and Roma fear Liverpool will ask for Montenegro striker Mirko Vucinic in exchange.

Vucinic has many admirers in England, including Manchester United, though coach Claudio Ranieri wants him to stay at the Olympic Stadium.

Roma see Kuyt as an ideal addition because of tactical versatility and physical robustness.

The 30-year-old can play on either flank or up front and rarely seems to pick up injuries.

Rafa likes Dirk because he did exactly what Rafa told him to do. Unpredictability is not a quality that Rafa appreciates.

As things stand I wouldn't want to swap Dirk for Mexes because we have centre-back options available with Kelly proving his worth and Kyrgiakos in form, but we don't currently have many options available for the right wing.

If we were to sign one or more such players, I wouldn't personally regard Dirk as indispensable.

Swap deals rarely happen if ever bar the crazy Eto'o plus cash for Zlatan.

Hahaha, a swap deal with a player that has 6 months left on his contract and can pre sign for a new club in a months time for free.

Yeah, that would be an amazingly good deal for Roma and ditto bad for us. It will never happen.

Dirk will probably be here until he goes back to Holland for a last season at Utrecht/Feyenoord.
