Mertesacker to Arsenal ?

Plus they might have scored five but let in three, enough to ensure they lost the majority of games they would let in that many

He was very poor yesterday - forgot Lampard and Terry on their goals. He's slow, which is compounded by being around Santos being an average defender.

Yeah I thought he'd be great

He's almost as bad as Gary cahill

Don't try to deflect this on Cahill.
You wanted this shithouse defender now stand by it.

Walcott does flatter to deceive, but he's by no means shit.

When on form he can be a very dangerous player, but he needs to learn an awful lot still. He's not progressing as quickly as anyone expected. He's a useful player for Arsenal to have, but he's not ready to be an automatic starter.

He can be a dangerous player, so could Babel. If you keep making runs then your bound to get a few right eventually, and some defenders can't cope with pace.

However he doesn't know where to run, when to pass and who to pass to, and it will be very difficult to learn those skills (I can't think of anyone who ever developed those skills overnight).

It would be interesting to hear nornirongooner's opinion...

EDIT: 125 pages of mixed opinions here (granted I only read page 1 and page 125 so I'm making a few assumptions, also the last post was in 2008)

....and i have. He;s been shocking and i hold my hands up

Whenever Per gets mentioned i seem to be lumbered in with him, by some people at least. But i'm hapy to admit he's been proper shit
but so has Gary Cahill, someone you STILL think is good enough for us when he's only had 1 good season and its been followed up and preceded by average. For club AND country.

Stop being so defensive

To be honest I haven't seen much of Cahill this season but I keep hoping that the reason Bolton is doing poorly is because he's surrounded by shit. I still want to see how he'd do in a better club.
But since we got Coates I think there are other priorities. Especially the midfield.

All that defensive stuff isn't my forte, but this fella is pretty muck isn't he.
He's like Hyypia, except not good.

Nah....i don't think so. There is still a good player in there. I wouldn't be so quick to write him off.
He'll probably be better than squillachi, but he's never going to be above average in England I think. He seems like he can't cope with the pace

I agree with kj. Granted Mertesacker's not had a good start, but he's been too good a player for too long to jump to conclusions about him this quickly.

The people posting in this thread should be careful they don't get run over by the GREAT BIG BACKTRACKING BUS THAT MODO'S ROLLING OUT OF HERE.

"Gary Cahill? Haven't seen him play much this year as it goes..."

Like fuck.

In all fairness Fabio, Mertersacker has been poo. Saying that Modo, Cahill who you have continually bigged up and extolled the virtues of, has been fucking awful as well. It happens.

I still want Cahill despite Boltons poor start.
Really? He's been fucking woeful. Regardless of whether you think you think he's surrounded by shit - if he was any good he should be bolstering the defence (think of the difference Vermaelen makes to Arsenal) - but he's not. Because he's not very good.

Good enough to start for England?
Carlton Palmer played 18 times for England.

Tbf, I remember someone telling me that you don't buy centre backs off relegated sides, when we bought Henchoz. That said, he (Cahill) has been shit and the England thing is neither here nor there, look at the bellend who's in charge and the plethora of fantastic decisions he's made so far.

Fair point on Henchoz but teams can get relegated through being defensively or offensively poor. Sometimes both of course. Bolton have leaked 27 goals in 10 games. That's pretty shocking really and Cahill is a key part of that defence.
