So McClaren's doomed, with yet more ammunition for those that said he's a good coach or number 2, but not a great manager.

The media is claiming Rodgers, Moyes and a few others are "in the frame", but that Benitez is the preferred choice.

He also appears to be a popular choice with the fans; one poll I saw had 92% favouring Benitez (admittedly it was one site, and the poll was "Benitez: yes or no?", with one poster saying he'd prefer a "sack of shit" as manager to McClaren, so it's not that useful)

He's out of a job, back in the Wirral. There's been contact. Do you think he would seriously agree to manage a basket-case club like Newcastle?

Would it be a good idea for either party? I always felt that Benitez knows he's best suited to European football, and that's also higher profile, but I suppose anything's possible.

I think Moyes will be the new manager, assuming Benitez and Rodgers don't want it, but it could be an interesting appointment.

Rafa or Moyes ...

Benitez is a better manager. Neither are exactly renowned for scintillating teams, fairly or not. Benitez is far less likely to accept any of Ashley's bollocks, though.

Moyes seems like an easier, more obvious choice, who would also want the job more.

No doubt about it ... but Rafa has never dealt with a team like this before - bottom half team thinking they should be challenging for the league.

Would he improve them? Sure .. but he's already been thrown to the side with Real Madrid sacking ... He should really find a better job for him (He should have never left Napoli).

I don't think you can blame Benitez for taking the Real job, even if everyone knew it was going to be a disaster. As for Newcastle, well, he used Chelsea and Napoli as shop windows/ stepping stones, that would be the only reason I can think of for taking that job

Oh definitely - he had to fulfill his dream.

Good point re: Chelsea/Napoli as stepping stones but Newcastle? Mired in a really difficult relegation battle with 1, maybe 2, decent defenders? That's a large ask ...

Yeah. Even with a decent team, they haven't won anything or even challenged properly for a title in decades. All they really have going for them is a big, decent stadium and no competition for fans locally. Everything else is fucked.

He would probably make them challenging for a EL place every season. You know that he would build a very good squad if he get the final say. They wouldn't need to worry about being relegated and that is worth a lot of money.

Wouldn't surprise me if he would sign Lucas and Reina.

I think they'd be better off with Moyes than Rafa, I don't think they'd take to a tactical manager on the sidelines taking notes and not batting an eyelid when they score. Rafa is also too good for them.

I think Benitez would be the wrong man for Newcastle right now. With 9 games to go and morale in the pits, I think the most suitable manager right now is someone who can come in and motivate the guys. The new manager bounce itself is good enough to earn you some points - I'm not sure you want Benitez's stone coldness at this point. He'd be a better hire in the summer, with the morale issue less of a worry and with time for him to get his guys and get the team to buy in to his methods.

Yeah, Moyes seems a better fit right now.

Surely Rafa has no interest in managing Newcastle?

The idea of being manager and being on the clubs board would likely appeal to him.

Doesn't Graham Carr control all the signings and act as a DOF there. I highly doubt Rafa will be happy there. Given that he is the first choice of Valencia next season, pure madness to consider Newcastle. Moyes is a better fit for Newcastle.

Hard to say... The top jobs aren't available in the summer, and even if Wenger leaves, I'm not sure the Arsenal board will identify him as the new man, and I doubt their fans will want him too. There aren't really too many options in the Premier League if he wants to return - maybe there's Southampton, if Koeman leaves. Spurs if they lose Pochettino could be an option, but their fans may prefer someone to carry on with their current style (not that Levy gives a shit what they think though). Newcastle has fervent, deluded fans and a shit owner, but if he's desperate to return to football quickly, he might just take on a club as a stepping stone first and see what's available after that.

The intriguing one might be Everton - they've the personnel that fits his style of football, and they're just lacking someone who can organize a proper defence. Now, that would be quite an intriguing development if the job does get offered. 😉

So anyway, I'm not sure who could be able to turn them around right now for the remainder of the season. Someone who can get the spirits up, yet be stern and kick the players' arses when needed without antagonizing them and losing their support. I think their best route right now is to pay a bit of premium for a caretaker manager, but with a definite plan to part ways after that (yes, even if the caretaker does well).

Garry Monk perhaps? He's done this before with Swansea (although not as bad a situation), though that might not sit well with Shelvey.

It's as if someone fed in to a computer all the factors that would cause Rafa's head to blow up and then asked: 'what job would this be?' Newcastle.

Poor squad, check. Someone in situ who thinks they know better when it comes to signing players, check. Meddling directors, check. Meddling owner, check. Stark staring mad fans, check. Local press with the patience of a gnat, check.

If he takes that job he'll out himself as a masochist.

Everton would be the perfect fit for Rafa atm but he'd never take that job.

Hahaha...Spot on.

Newcastle would be Madrid minus the glamour, prestige, world class players, and money. Essentially a mad owner and delusional fans.

There's a lot about Everton which in theory would make it a good job for Rafa, but in practice the mere fact that it's Everton rules it out straight away.

Rafa would be better off going back to Valencia when Neville gets the sack.

Moyes is a much better fit for Newcastle. He'd probably get them to at least mid table or challenging for a EL spot. They have the funds but have bought horribly bad and need to set up a defence.
Moyes is good at spotting a decent deal and would make them hard to beat I think.

I don't want to see Rafa do really badly, but I'd hate to see him succeed with that mob. They epitomise everything's that unhealthy about one club cities - supporters who smugly assume they're far more passionate and better than other fans because they all support the same team (duh!), even when the daft bastards slump off with about 70 minutes left because they're losing. If they started winning they'd immediately decide they're the most important club in the country, if not the world. They have absolutely no sense of perspective, and deserve to wallow in misery for ever, preferably in a lower league.

Coincidentally Sean O Driscoll is available ;-)
