Not what you were expecting, he came close to snagging himself a WSOP bracelet.

Max Kruse cut from World Cup, goes to WSOP

By Frankie Price on June 19, 2014

Germany kick-started its World Cup campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Portugal and is one of the top favourites to lift the trophy in Brazil. There is no better place to be for German football players than among their peers, but unfortunately for Max Kruse, there is no chance for that to happen.
Instead of dwelling on sadness and thinking about how manager Joachim Low decided to leave him outside the squad for Brazil, the striker made different arrangements. He booked a flight to Las Vegas and is now playing among the best poker players in the world at the WSOP. Kruse is better with the ball than with poker cards, but this doesn’t mean that he should be ruled out for a bracelet.

The German footballer has high expectations for this edition of the World Series of Poker and will be playing with a sense of urgency. There is no better way of forgetting about his professional setback than by making a deep run in the biggest poker event. The best case scenario is to win a bracelet, but even if he only makes the final table in one of the events, he will still collect a nice paycheque.
Max was halfway there, as he secured a final table placement at the Event #36 – $1.5 NL 2-7 Draw in which, he finished third. This is a remarkable performance for someone who is still making his baby steps in this highly competitive environment. Kruse learned the basics from his buddy George Danzer who is a successful poker player and he put this newfound knowledge to good use.

Along with his third place finish, the German took home $36,494 and although this didn’t ease the pain of the World Cup absence, it is still a great achievement. Football players make much more than this and it goes without saying that the ones who play for their national team in Brazil will earn bigger amounts. Nevertheless, Kruse could be the only one bragging about being paid in the World Series of Poker , while providing his teammates with an incentive to win the event.
Let’s see how he fares from now on at the felt.
