Matip to be banned during Afcon?

Can't swear to it but I think there may be some kind of FIFA regulation which limits the reasons players and/or clubs can give for refusing international call-ups and prohibits unexplained refusals. I'm fairly sure such bans as the one being spoken about in Matip's case have been enforced before. More's the pity.

If I remember correctly (Must admit I seldom do), there was some talk about players reporting injured for the International game could be banned to played if they suddenly were fit to play the next domestic game?

Am I missing something here, this is the 21st century right? You can't just force a player to play international football, can't say just say no?

Of course he can.

The rules state that we we can't refuse to release him.

If we say we're happy to release him and he won't go they can hardly punish LFC.

Exactly, so whats this talk of him being banned if he says no?

Poor the mystic who just doesn't get it because it doesn't fit with his own thoughts.

Mystic read my words... THEY BANNED CLAUDE MAKELELE FOR THE SAME FUCKING THING - 2 CLUB MATCHES. GET IT?? There is already previous examples.

They didn't, it was just threatened.

And Chelsea were refusing to release him.

It seems a bit mental that they could punish someone for not wanting to play for their country.

Has there ever been a precedent?

It's restriction of trade and will never happen, aside from in the fantasies of a few deluded African coaches, and a few even more deluded journos.

Mourinho said the French Football Federation (FFF) had threatened Makelele with a club ban if he did not play in the Euro 2008 qualifying ties against Georgia on Saturday and a 2006 World Cup final rematch against Italy in Paris on Wednesday week.

Fifa spokesman Andreas Herren said: "The general situation is that any player is free to decide that he is not playing for his national team. There is no Fifa rule to prevent any player stopping his international career, that's up to him."

Just read that Cameroon may ask for Joel Matip to be banned from club competition for refusing a call up to the national team. Meaning he'll have to sit in the stands if upheld. Tossers.
Unlikely to happen. He refused to the call ups prior to AFCON tournament. We'll be just fine.

I blame the media for misreporting, there are many instances where a player has been threatened with a ban. *cough* makelele *cough*, ribery and Moses being high profile examples.
