Just read that Cameroon may ask for Joel Matip to be banned from club competition for refusing a call up to the national team. Meaning he'll have to sit in the stands if upheld. Tossers.

Saw that, and it seems very strange if thats the case. 7 players have said that they arent available and surely its their choice if they want to play for the national team or not?

Yeah Cameroon can do that and at the same time bury every chance they've got of him playing for them for the rest of his career.
Smart move.

He should apply for Norwegian citizenship. Then he wouldn't have to worry about those international tournaments anymore!

He has retired from international duty, it was announced a few months back.. Nothing will happen..

Paper Talk..
There's no such thing as retiring from international duty. In reality it needs to be mutual/gentleman's agreement. If a country wants a player to represent them, they can force the issue.

Agreed though it's likely to end in courts if cameroon try and force it. And will probably end in a rule change.

Since when do you ever have to play for your country? That's obsurd

Fifas regulations on status of transfers and players is clear on the issue (p33-35) a player can not actually retire from international duty, he can only request not to be selected but its that 'a request'.

Back in 2008 Claude Makelele was banned for 2 club matches for refusing a call up. Even though he said he had retired from international football.

Buckle up guys, this could get messy.

Messi retired from International footie in June or July. He managed to miss exactly 0 Argentina games before he reported back on duty in August.

id rather he was banned for the duration of Cameroon's involvement and stayed here and fit etc than travel half way around the world to play a bunch of cloggers for 10 days its not ideal but its better

Am I missing something here, this is the 21st century right? You can't just force a player to play international football, can't say just say no?
