Well, he's maybe not THE player who's going to transform us, but if we could pick Valbuena up for a few million and sell Babel for the same price, I'd be happy with that kind of trade. He's a good player - reminds me of Lil Luis, only more direct and aggressive. Good attitude, great shot. Could be an interesting squad player/impact sub for us, at the right price...

Liverpool and Wigan are chasing Marseille ace Mathieu Valbuena, skysports.com understands.

Valbuena is a target for a host of clubs across Europe as doubts grow over his long-term future at Stade Velodrome.

Reports emanating from France have suggested Wigan have tabled a bid for the diminutive midfielder, while the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea have been credited with an interest in the player.

Valbuena's agent, Christophe Hutteau, has confirmed Wigan have expressed an interest in the 24-year-old, but that the player would prefer a move to a top club in the Premier League with Liverpool also monitoring the skilful midfielder's situation at Marseille.

"Mathieu would very much be interested in playing in England as the Premier League is the best in Europe," Hutteau told skysports.com.

"Wigan are interested in Mathieu, but I think Mathieu would like to go to a big team in England.

"Liverpool are also interested in Mathieu, but so are teams in Spain, Germany, Italy and Russia.

"I think Mathieu will leave Marseille and I think it is very possible he could play in England this season.

Yeah, I saw that article. He has always impressed me when I've seen L'OM play.

He scored the winner at Anfield aswell if I'm not mistaken, great goal too..

He's only scored 7 goals in 70 odd appearances though. Better stats than Valencia like, but not prolific.

Tell us more about him Bunnyman, where does he play? Whats his stats like?
As said, he scored that rocket against us when Marseille won 1-0 at Anfield a couple of years ago. He's very short, but reasonably strong. Quite fast, dribbles a lot. Can play on either wing or behind the striker.

He's only 24, but his goal stats are less impressive than I'd have expected - only 7 in 70-odd games for Marseille. And according to wiki, his contract runs to 2013, so I wouldn't have thought he'd be all that cheap really. The Marseille fans love him.

He scored against us at Anfield..

I remember him as small and annoyying..
Haha, that's pretty much what I was going to say.

according to a rather messed up wiki.. he has already joined us...

I remember this chap though.. good little player... scored an absolute belter against us..

kinda like a very good El Zhar would be the best way to describe him..

In fact we should consider a trade...

EL Zhar + Small lump of Cash for this chap...

The goal at around 50 seconds is an absolute corker.... worth a watch in itself even if it is just a youtube clip and a semi link to a player

He was class against us every time weve played them recently, he could be a great little signing, he creative and could help unlock tight defences

yup .. be a useful option from the bench... Ideal impact player.. that step up we need from having El Zhar as an option.

Likes to get stuck in... but with a bit of skill...

I like how it was preceded by 20secs of him getting kicked in the head.

To be fair to him, he's more in the little luis category than El Zhar, although deoesn't he play a little more central than both of them?

true he kinda reminds me of both in some ways..

Right, a cheap(ish) player that I finally like.

This cunt can play, no doubt about it. In the game that they beat us at Anfield a few years back, he was the best player on the park by a fucking mile. Can somebody dig out the post-game thread from there (does it still exist?)? Cos I remember waxing lyrical about the chap.

He's injury-prone, he's seriously prone to dips in form, but I'm certain that in a good side, playing regularly that he could be a super addition. If he gets his head out of his arse of course.

If we are seriously interested, this is yet another case of Rafa being seduced by an opposition player that's played well against us; cf Zenden, Crouch, Pennant, Benayoun, etc etc...

Talented little player, but I don't see why Marseille would want to sell him. They seem to be pretty strong financially these days; they just bought Lucho from Porto for 18M euro. They want to do something big next season and Valbuena has been their best creative player.

in fairness they probably don't want to sell him, but as it is with french football.. a lot of talented players want to play in england... and this is just another case of that..

Liverpool target Valbuena and Cambiasso as potential replacements for Alonso or Mascherano.

Bbc.

At least it didn't say Alonso AND Mascherano.

It's a while since I've done maths but here goes;

Alonso + Mascherano = 10,000(Valbuena + Cambiasso)

It's just nonsense. Valbuena's not a CM at all.

Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena is set to snub a move to the Premier League in order to play for Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman impressed during his current side's unsuccessful challenge for the Ligue 1 title over the course of last season.

A number of clubs from England's top-flight were rumoured to be interested in securing the services of the 24-year-old, but Valbuena would prefer a switch to La Liga.

"Mathieu has seen all the offers and destinations, he had contact from Premier League clubs but he prefers Spain and Atletico Madrid," Valbuena's agent, Christophe Hutteau told, Rmc.

"(Atletico is) a big team and good team in the UEFA Champions League."

Despite his desire to move away from the Stade Velodrome, Marseille are thought to only be considering offers in the region of €7million.

He'd be a steal at that price.
