Liverpool are reportedly in the race to sign South American starlet Mateo Musacchio.

The 20-year-old Villarreal defender is being monitored by a number of top clubs across Europe, and Liverpool are thought to be one of those who have joined the race for the player.

Musacchio has risen to prominence in La Liga after a string of fine performances, with Liverpool, Juventus and AC Milan those thought to be leading the chase for the player.

Villarreal aren't thought to be keen on selling the player, and his long-term contract with the Yellow Submarine means the Spanish side don't have to part with their man cheaply.

However, talkSPORT claim that Spanish reports state the El Madrigal outfit would accept a 'generous' offer for the player's services.

Kenny Dalglish is thought to be keen on bringing a talented young defender to his Anfield squad as a potential long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher, and Musacchio would fit the bill for Liverpool.

Damien Comolli, director of football strategy at Anfield, is also thought to have given the nod over a move for the player.

Club owners NESV have already shown that they are willing to back the manager in the transfer market after two big-money signings in January, and Liverpool could again look to spend big at the end of the season.

Davide Santon is another defender who has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past, and it appears likely that Dalglish will make a defender addition for Liverpool in the summer.

We are not going to splash the cash the way the papers think we will. We are going to cover our operations with our revenue. But we will be run properly; I am happy with that. Liverpool earned 40 million revenue last year, right?

About time we signed another starlet!

And one that could play RB and CB would be really useful.

A defender? We need more goalkeepers.

Ha

-sigh-

I watched him play yesterday, he's decent but he fell asleep for the Aguero 90th minute winner.

We'll probably buy Kun as well.

If this lad is viewed as a long term replacement for Carra, what of Kelly, Wilson, Wisdon and the lot?

Carra isn't getting younger. Kelly deffo has a future with us. The others - dunno

I like the look of Wilson but we need to introduce him with care IMO. For example there's no way I'd pick him ahead of Skrtel tomorrow. Skrtel's game has picked up under Kenny, besides which he's possibly the only CB I can remember who's taken Dogbreath on and beaten him in a straightforward physical battle.

Oh of course, I wouldn't throw him in tomorrow. I would however have him ahead of skrtel for now in 'standard' games, if there is such a thing. Not automatic, but give him 2 or 3 games then review the situation.

Is centre back the toughest position in the team for a young player to be given the time to get experience in the first team?

If you make a mistake at centre back it will most likely end up conceding a goal, penalty or red card. It's just too risky to put somebody like Wilson in against a premier league team and we don't get a chance to do that in the cups as we got dumped out early on.

Has it really? He was poor against Fulham and disastrous against Everton. In Wolves and Stoke games he wasn't really tested. I still have huge reservations about Skrtel. I agree he of course needs to play against Chelsea though.

There weren't many who played that well in the games against Fulham and the blueslime, and Skrtel was tested physically (if not much in terms of skill) against Stoke by your fellow Scando Carew, who's still a powerful so-and-so even if his legs have gone. Like you I don't remember him having much of a workout against Wolves, but it's often said that the less a defender is noticed, the better he's probably played.

Its going to be hard watching tomorrow - some part of me says we will lose becasue Chelsea will be really confident - no matter how you look at it they will feel they got the big name player and we have ended with 2nd rate. I am still finding it hard to take. That said I fully understand why Torres left - its unlikely we will get 4th position this year, and that means another season out of the CL. A player as high profile as him cannot be seen not to be playing in the CL, at least Chelsea guarantee that for him for next season.

This re-building shit is taking too long for us - we seem to take two steps forward and 3 steps back anytime we re-structure. We should not be in this position but we are. I think tomorrow our midfield will find it hard, and so will the defence. The front players will not get a look in for our team, and we got no-one to break them down with any magic.

I think it will be 3-0 to them, and 3-1 if we are lucky enough to get a goal. Don't be upset if you see Torres get a hatrick.
