Stoke's £10m record signing Peter Crouch is set to make his debut against former club Liverpool.

The England striker is one of three players snapped up on transfer deadline day by Potters manager Tony Pulis, who will run the rule over the other new recruits Wilson Palacios and Cameron Jerome to see if they are fit enough to make their bows for the Staffordshire outfit.

Marc Wilson and Rory Delap (both hamstring) will also be assessed ahead of kick-off.

New signing Craig Bellamy is set for a place on the bench.

Captain Steven Gerrard is close to a return after a groin operation sidelined him in March while right-back Glen Johnson is in contention for his first start of the season after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Defender Martin Kelly is also close to fitness after sustaining a hamstring problem in Liverpool's last outing against Bolton prior to the international break.

Well he's on my unofficial line up so yeah. But I don't think it'll be because he's taken some flack.
A: He's barely played for two weeks so he's fresh.
B: Stoke play long ball football and are dangerous on set pieces. So big Andy might be needed in defence during corners.
C: They've got two(three) big aerially strong central defenders that need to be occupied.

Hmmm.. I don't think that having big aerially efficient defenders is a great reason for putting a big guy up against them, not always anyway, sometimes it's the likes of Suarez who give those kind of bruisers the run around. I think he'll play, but I'd rather see us pack the midfield a bit more by having three in there, than go 442.

I think we'll play 4-3-3 with Suarez having a "free-role" on the right. He'll probably swap flanks with Downing during the game.

Phooey. If Suarez is on his game the only one of those three who has a realistic chance of getting anywhere near him is Woodgate, and even that's dependent on him being fully fit.
