Masher: We are cursed

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano thinks his team are cursed following their draw against Stoke on Saturday.

The Reds were undone by a late equaliser from Robert Huth at the Britannia Stadium, having taken the lead through Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos in the 57th minute.

In a week when they also crashed out of the FA Cup after a home defeat to Reading, Mascherano is beginning to feel like there is a spell on the Anfield club.

"It seems like we are cursed in terms of injuries and letting in incredible goals in the last minutes of games," he said in The People.

"The situation is enough to get anyone down, but this team is going to keep going forward because of the spirit and history of the club.

"It is normal that we are being criticised - we are all to blame for going out of the Champions League and FA Cup."

Manager Rafa Benitez has come under severe pressure following a dreadful season for the Reds, which has already seen them slip out of the title race in the Premier League.
Responsibility

However, Argentina international Mascherano says the whole team must take collective responsibility for their bad form of late.

"We share the credit when things go well and the blame when things go badly," he added.

"Rafa has a difficult job because this season key players are getting injured, which would upset the plans of any coach.

"Torres (Fernando) and Gerrard (Steven) are fundamental for us and any team would miss them.

"It is true we are not in certain competitions now but there are still things to resolve.

"Being champions of the first Europa League sounds good and getting into the top four after all the problems we have had, anyone of us would sign up for that now.

"They are the objectives and nobody is going to drop their guard, because it is impossible to do so with our manager.

"We have to sort out the problems and win. For once, I'd prefer to get the points over the level of our performance."

I don't agree with "we'll keep going forward because of our history" comment, but it's good to see Mascherano caring about the club and taking responsibility on behalf of the players. We need more of this from our senior players if we're going to get out of this.

Another of our key-players sticking up for the manager shocka!?!

Masher's joining the likes of Torres, Reina, Carra, Gerrard and Agger in sticking up for the manager of late.

Really makes you wonder where the lost dressing-room clique, that some posters on 6CM seems to be well aware of, are hiding these days doesn't it?

You're conveniently forgetting Danny Murphy has hinted Gerrard and Carragher want Benitez out.

And it's not really a staunch support of his boss. He just acknowledges that Benitez has it "difficult" at the moment.

i made a cup of coffee in my lfc mug this morning and then noticed it had a crack from top to bottom and was slowly leaking. coincidence? i think not.

To be honest I wasn't aware that he did.

Anyways the reason why I replied to this article was only to underlines the obvious fact that there's a lot of key-players still believing in the manager.

Nothing is black and white and I can surely understand why players would feel down-hearted and lost for words at this stage, but that's not the same as them not backing up the gaffer.

Carra and Gerrard in particularly can actually thank themselves for some of the mess we're in this Season if you ask me. THey've both played well under normal standards and to blame the manager for this would seem a bit rich after we ALMOST won the first Premiership-trophy in soon to be 20 years last season.

I don't think we'll get a true account until we read players biographies after Benitez's departure.
,,
There's so much spin and everyone has their own agenda, but the best evidence for me is the gutless performances on the pitch. Not that the players should be excused of course, but nonetheless it's the biggest indictment they no longer believe in the manager.

Well, we are certainly 'leaking' at the moment.

Goals, confidence, coffee, whatever.

Can you please buy a brand new mug mate, I think that could actually turn our luck to the better, for good.

Preferably do so before Wednesdays game.

Thank you.

This part is rather telling too;

They are the objectives and nobody is going to drop their guard, because it is impossible to do so with our manager.

i think the forum should all chip in, or you could just buy me one i suppose.

I'm sorry but it would suicide to come and say ye rafas shit. We've lost all confidence in what he does and says, especially since it looks like we could be stuck with rafa for some time yet. What players say pubicly and privately are sometimes two completly different things.

This is unfair - against Stoke, the players all gave of their best - the problem is that so many of the squad have severe limitations. Their best isn't good enough. It's the manager's fault for assembling such a poor squad.

I knew there was a reason for our curse. I feel so much better now that we've found it, and fixing it should probably not cost more than 5 pounds.

A mini resurgence of effort against Stoke cannot vindicate months of poor form.

The players attitude has been appalling in recent weeks.
