lots of new players learning to play with each other. i do think hughes is also a weak link here. strange really the spending power, the stadium, the stability at the top - its everything that we could ever want.

once they attract a top class proven manager they will be a much better team although i think its only a matter of time before this group of players gel and start getting the results.

heh.

Draw masters.

Let's not take the piss to much though eh? They're on two more points than us.

they've spent something like 200 million and are dog shit.

i get the feeling 4th place would be seen as a success for city this season. i reckon they'll be in the mix for this till the end of the season.

Yet they're still above us, dog shit or not.

wonder where LFC would be if we had 200 mil to bring in some stars, why the fuck didnt they buy us

[/quote]

Because they had a ready-made stadium, thus saving, even the "Super Rich," about £400M.

And cost a lot less to buy, hence saving them a few more hundred million.

they're above us FFF because we've had about 10 players injured and not been ourselves. You know as well as I do we will improve and go on a tremendous run

City have all their players available, all the hype and excitement and to be honest the results are shocking considering their resources.

I dont think Hughes can handle or manage the big 'star' players or build a defence. They need a continental type manager I think.

I'm not disagreeing that hughes isnt the man for the job.

I hold great stock in a managers ability to win away games. That's when you learn a lot about how much he can do tactically to get an advantage over the opposition, & last season Hughes had the worst away results in the league.

I am disagreeing that it's acceptable to be disparaging of them when they're above us in the league.

Let's not talk to much shite aye? Karma has been biting our asses all season. We play them in 2 weeks time and desperatly need to win.

Exactly.

I think Hughes' target from the owners is to get into the Champions League for season.

Yep, & he may just do it. Let's hope not though, cos at the minute it looks like we'll be the ones missing out if that's the case.

Our long run of winning games needs to come soon to prove otherwise.

I would jump at 4th now if it was offered. I know Rebel was castigated for it a while back when he said we need CL footy every season but City will definitely pose a threat from here on in and we really need to reaffirm our status in the top 4. We need to do it before City really start flexing their muscles and get a top class manager in with even better players, otherwise we really do run the risk of lagging behind them just as much as we are Utd and Chelsea.

Like I said in the summer, i'd take third now. don't fancy a tough qualifier after the World cup, can easily go out.

City still have to learn the culture of winning and time will tell if Hughes can instill it in them. Us, on the other hand, despite 20 years without the league, still have that culture, even if our resources suggest otherwise.

The main thing I've noticed about City - and this is going back to last season - is that they lack discipline and organisation, which has always struck me as weird when thinking back to Hughe's Blackburn side.

The game today was a perfect example of that. City finally got their noses in front after getting outplayed in the first half and yet instead of cooling things down and taking the sting out of the game, they left the game very open by pouring forward as quickly as possible every time they had the ball.

I think this was the first City game I've seen this season - perhaps a bad example as they were obviously well off form - but based on last season, Hughes has struggled to really get them to perform as an efficient, consistent unit that can control games. They've got loads of quality that will always get them goals, but to be a top side, you need to learn how to control games.

Maybe City should sign Lucas.

Apparently he's great at controlling games, according to Benitez and O'Hare anyway

Ken, I think the difference between Hughes' Blackburn and City sides has a lot to do with the quality and character of the players in each. Hughes really molded an effective and efficient unit out of players who really had no business doing that well and thus were dependent on him to give them direction. City is a work-in-progress of players with a lot of talent who really haven't accomplished a whole lot (in the team sense) in their careers yet (off the top of my head, Tevez is the only one who stands out as otherwise and even he left United because he didn't feel a "part" of that team). I don't think anyone should write Hughes off yet and the idea that City is just biding time until they can attract a top, top manager is incorrect in my opinion. Time will tell if he can get the job done but I wouldn't rule it out. Might take a little longer than some expect. Despite their big budgets of late, they had a lot farther to travel to get to the top than Chelsea did when Abramovich took over.

Bren: HAHA!

I dont think I wrote Hughes off in that post. I was just making an observation about how Ive seen them play.

As for City having more talent and thus less of a dependency on the manager, I dont agree at all - are you saying that he is allowing them more freedom? If so, that just proves the point. What it is, as you say, is still a work in progress with lots of new players and Hughes will have to get the balance right.

Except I never said that.

Good work Chandler.

Do Citeh actually have any 'big 'star' players.

You could probably say Robinho and to a certain extent Tevez are, but apart from that, I wouldnt say so. So, I dont think its Hughes' inability to manage such players.

Citeh were always going to have a blip in form - teams figure out how others play and its only after a while of getting the team to gel that it can learn to adapt and vary its style of play. Of course, that is helped by having better players, which is why more often than not, the top teams are the top teams and tend to stay that way.

I can only assume Hughes is radically different as a personality behind closed doors, because in public he sounds like someone who's had a particularly boring day working at the abattoir.

I think the players have larger egos and it will take longer for him to get them all to buy in, beyond that initial period of enthusiasm displayed at the beginning of the season and the intimidation factor they began to (briefly) have over other teams.
