Manchester United have emailed supporters to apologise for the 'entirely unintended' offence caused by a Nazi Swastika-style graphic on a weekly bulletin to fans alongside the headline, New Order.

David Sternberg, United's recently-appointed Director of Media, tweeted a complete and unreserved apology for the publication of the logo on Saturday after being contacted by supporters on Twitter.

The Swastika-style image, made up of the letters M, U, F and C, prompted outrage among supporters, with the New Order reference also proving hugely embarrassing due to its use by Adolf Hitler during the 1940s.

Yeah it is a definite nod to popular Salford based beat combo New Order rather than the Nazi connotations.

New Order/Joy Division have never had anything to do with that type of imagery at all

I don't mean to be offensive, but what the fuck is happening to the world? I mean seriously - PC gone mad. It's nothing.

(The Mancs may be evil, but they're not Nazis)

Well, there was a hell of a fuss at the time, given the Anti-Nazi League was at its height and the music press was as political then as it's brain dead now. The group went through a very uncomfortable period, actually. The swastika claim is silly here, but there are still lots of people, me included, who'd never use that phrase.

It should be interesting when they notice the blatant demonic imagery that they have as a club badge

I know. They maybe should have picked a different name after Ian Curtis died though.

It would be a real revelation if it turned out that MUFC stood for Manchester United - Fascist Cunts.
Anyways, I don't see the swastika.

If I were as keen to find a pretext for getting offended as too many seem to be these days, I as someone of part Jewish heritage would be offended that anybody could seriously see Nazi connotations in that poster. The whole idiotic idea seems to me to cheapen the genuine horror of what the Nazis did.

Swastika is the very first thing that entered my mind when I saw that. The geometric pattern and colour scheme are identical to my aspergers way of looking at things.

Poor the David Sternberg.

I think what makes it worse is the "New Order" headline next it, because this phrase also has Nazi connotations. Had it been just red instead of red and black and without the "New Order" headline, people would probably not have made that association at all.

Sorry, I didn't realize it's so obvious for you Brits. I think here in the States not many people would associate the words "new order" with fascism.

Hang on a second, it was issue 39! The year the war started! The plot thickens!

Seriously? Of course it's deliberate. Just like that London Olympics one was.

Whichever design guy planted the idea definitely knew.
