Chirivella – I am ashamed I didn't think of him ahead of the game, given that he's the most experienced player in our U23 and we keep him around exactly for games like this. When the team sheets came out, that was the one position people thought would be the weak spot – instead he controlled the game from start to finish; his calm passing and superbly quick distribution was the key to making sure Everton never got settled into any kind of rhythm. Jones will rightly get the headlines for the goal, but if we're judging the 93 minutes of the game as a whole, I think Pedro more than any other player was responsible for keeping our structure of play together. Really superb display.
Lallana – he was a super-man, appearing anywhere help was needed and marrying his considerable skills with 150% effort. Together with Chirivella he ensured we dominated the midfield battle, particularly in the 2nd half.
Gomez – like Klopp said, for the first time in his life he had to take on the role of the senior defender and chief organizer in a back 4 – and was flawless, both as a player and as a leader. A big improvement on his performance against Arsenal in the Carabao cup where the leadership and organization part was lacking – in his defense, he was playing next to the hapless VDB in that game; having Phillips as a partner was a big step up. He looks every bit a VVD-type Rolls Royce of a defender these days. Please stay fit!
Honorable mention to pretty much everyone else on the pitch. It was an immensely enjoyable game; in some way more so than some of the senior squad games this season. And dishonorable mention to the senior players of Everton, the likes of Walcott, Pickford, Schneiderlin, Sigurdsson, Richarlison etc who were really, embarrassingly shit.
