There is a cliche in football about "a game of two halves" – well, this was a game of three half-hours – first 30 mins of total domination, second interval failing to react to Salzburg's change of system, getting sloppy and getting punished, final half-hour of scoring the go-ahead goal and holding on with full concentration the rest of the way. This makes it somewhat difficult to judge individual players over such contrasting game periods. My take:
Fabinho – the only player who I thought was faultless throughout. Great passing, won his duels with ease and made some lovely runs forward.
Firmino – created 3 out of 4 goals. I wish he looked for a shot instead of a pass more often though. Twice he was clean through and still tried to pass.
Tough to choose, but I think I'll give it to Mane for his excellent play in the first half-hour and then solid level of effort in the last. It means something that Klopp chose to sub Salah who was on a hat-trick rather than Mane.
I absolutely love some of Robbo's plays in this game and he created and took his goal brilliantly, but he was also among the worst culprits with sloppy passing letting Salzburg back in the game, particularly early in the 2nd half. I thought Gomez was poor and Hendo very much meh; Van Dijk looked great at times, but won't be happy with being beaten for the 1st and 3rd goals. He definitely missed Matip next to him. Special mention to Trent, who locked down his flank defensively after we went ahead 4:3 – it shows he can be a good defender when he is fully concentrated on that task.
Very tough to choose as no player was truly on his game for 90 mins.
Fabinho - some lovely passing (bar one giveaway) and that professional Yellow as Rurik mentioned).
Mane - seemed unplayable at times. But that miss ...
Firmino - gave the ball away as much as anyone but those assists cannot be overlooked.
Everyone else either gave the ball away too often (and not under pressure - there was not much of the much vaunted Salzburg Press on view) or were involved in errors leading to goals. The worst match I've seen VvD play (equates to average for a normal human being).
