Maguire

Good player but has some shortcomings, With the English premium, Leicester have 70£ million defender. I cant see us spending big on him. I like lasessles from Newcastle, who would probably be available for half the fee.

Last summer I consistently said we should have looked at Keane, Maguire or Gibson.

I also said Ward should have been #1.

Vida is what? 28/29? He's at his peak now.

Vida is just a smooth-chinned Voronin, so by default is not worth looking at. NEXT!

Decent defender but fucking slow so no thanks. With the high line we play he would get roasted.

And he wasn't his partner Paul McGrath was stand out Irish defender at USA 94
Cheers for the education mate, you really didn't need to go to all the trouble of making 2 posts just to put me right on 2 things that have absolutely nothing to do with my original statement.

Maguire has also been excellent all season for Leicester, he's quality.

Harry Maguire just hasn't been on my radar at all, probably because I don't usually watch Leicester City or England. He didn't stand out for me in any of our games against Leicester last season, but I'm happy to admit that means nothing. He certainly looked good against Colombia last night but, in my blinkered existence, it's genuinely the first time I've noticed him and I've only heard his name mentioned once or twice before.

I wouldn't get carried away.

Defending well but passing not always crisp enough.
Playing in a back 3 for an England side not yet sorely tested.
Hasn't come up against a top class striker this tournament yet.
Looks something of a Ruddock type physically in time.

70m or something? Fuck no.

Ha you said Babb looked great in a WC, he didn't.

No. As DB said, Paul McGrath was really good in the world cup, and any fool knows it is not possible for two CBs to play well. At least, any fool in DBland ...

He'd make a great subject for a Mr Men book.

Mr Dreamy goes for a walk and ends up wandering out of Dreamyland into Reality World, where he meets a town full of adults who use actual facts to form their opinions.
Hilarity ensues.

Maguire has been very good in the PL, not just the WC. Chances are he's a proper, good player. He'll cost now though.
I don't really blame us for not going for him when he was cheap, remember Michael Dawson etc.
I think Maguire is a cut above that though.

Maguire was great last night and has showbil that he is a good player. Well worth it at 20 mill last season, but not at 50-60 mill this season.
Spurs paid 42m for Colombia's Davison Sanchez. Harry definitely on par. I rate Harry from the first moment I see him you can tell there is a player on there. It not just his height it's his ability to shut players down too and start attacks from defence. Like VVD he wins (most of) his headers. I know I'm going to get slated for saying this but in my opinion the quality gaps between Harry Maguire and Lovren is greater than the quality gap between Karius and Allison. If we got Maguire for 40/50m I wouldn't be upset... I haven't seen any reason why we are interested in throwing away 80m on Allison. Oblak yes, but not Allison.

Sanchez is much quicker, Maguire is better in the air and a better passer.
Whose better on one on ones? I think Maguire would edge it, those long legs of his are difficult to get around. Davinson is a fine player though, should have signed him last season.

Maguire got mugged by Salah memorably, and Sanchez wasn't much better in the 2-2 draw last season, but it depends on the player; quick, tricky types, I'd say Davison has the edge.

We probably splitting hairs lol!! They both good...that Mina guy was also good although admittedly I think his release clause is 100m...we at Liverpool complain about defenders but there are some good ones out there. Spurs getting davinson for 40m odd was a steal! I hear talk of Newcastle's Lascelles? Is he any good, I hear lots of positive things but Newcastle struggled last season at times.

Lascelles is probably the reason they finished as high as they did.

The points dropped when he didn't play is startling tbh

He's come on in the proverbial leaps and bounds since Benitez got there.

I remember he was highly-rated back in his Notts Forest days, but it went a bit quiet for a year or two, and then he was Captain.

I know there are some that are part of the leave lovren alone brigade but for me I wish we would replace him. There's a few predictable things about life and one is lovren misjudging a high ball that leads to a goal. Even with header magnet VVD next to him he still managed to misjudge that first goal for Roma at Anfield. Klopp loves lovren but I think it's his blind spot!

In fairness, Maguire / the defence had shut down Salah quite well for most of the game.

Sign a top class player that the one time the CB got too tight, the result was a goal.

I like Maguire but it would worry me that his left foot is only good for standing on. That's gone under the radar a bit so far, but opposition teams in the Prem will soon wise up to it if he joins us.

I refuse to believe that if you have noticed this, then the dudes at clubs who are actually paid to notice this haven't done so.

I never noticed, mind.

I didn't think he was that great, though I was watching it from the perspective of wanting Colombia to win. He seemed to give the ball away a lot, performed one great swan dive, and got lucky when he switched off in extra time expecting a second ball to come onto the pitch, leaving Colombia to break and have a goal disallowed.

He's a decent player, but wouldn't be worth the monstrous price he'd command now.

Great header today and pretty impressive all round. Would have him alongside VVD all day long but that kinda money needs going towards a keeper
