Scotch has no "e", Irish and American (*) have an "e".
Apparently whisk(e)y was first distilled in Ireland, but was used as a horse rub - it was the Scottish who came up with the idea of drinking it, which is why whisky will forever be superior to whiskey (though I do drink the Irish variants as well)
* I don't think the American crap even deserves a different spelling of the word, it should have a completely different name, such as "gnat piss".
Now try telling me this is not far more interesting (and manly) than discussing bloody pizza dough.
Wasn't Irish whiskey the more dominant product until the 1890s? So said the guide at the Teelings distillery....
Anyway, they are both nice, and frankly American whiskey can be pretty pleasant as well.
