Watching this game was so frustrating - partially because had we played like this last week, we'd have been in a better situation this week, and partially because we were so wasteful (as we've been most of 2021).

I know this may come off as knee jerk yaddi yadda yadday but ...
1) we need another 'front 3' player of high caliber - be it to add to the current 4, or to replace Salah/Mane/Firmino. It's stale, and this era is over (THANKS FSG YOU CHEAP CUNTS FOR NOT INVESTING IN A WORLD CLASS TEAM)
2) Gini should be allowed to leave. He is not a player who deserves more than his current wages as his best quality is his presence - time and time again, he just adds far too little to a team. A passenger most games.
3) I've said it before, I'll say it again, Thiago was a poor, unnecessary signing. Pity a team with little money had to waste so much on him.
4) Mane today was so so below his level. Bench player the rest of the season in hope that gives him the necessary break to do go again next year.
5) Salah could have further raised his place in our history books - but he was so wasteful. As in the 'fight for 4th,' we'll go as far as Salah's goals take us as no one else in this team is capable of doing so.
6) Kabak should be signed, he's good enough and a fair price too.
7) Philips is good enough to be our #4 but I'd sell him for 20 million to Brighton or Newcastle so we can buy a new player.
8) Man City will win the quadruple.
9) If we come out the rest of the season as we did today, we'll get 4th ...

There are definitely positives to take from that. Another clean sheet, looks like the tempo is back. We just need to be more clinical.

Baffled why he didn't play Thiago from the start over Gini

How have we gone from the football of 2 seasons ago, even last season for awhile to this? Cross, cross, cross, cross.
Its fucking baffling! It’s pathetic

Good effort from the lads. I thought Fabinho, Trent, Phillips and Gini in particular worked tirelessly, they all played their part in terms of effort. Once again though it's just not happening in front of goal, they all had chances tonight in the frontline and fluffed them. And I'm loathed to agree with McManaman but the whole cross after cross after cross thing does my head in too. We're not a big side, we do score from headers, but we're not aerially dominant, so why the fuck we resort to tossing in aimless balls is beyond me.

As said in the commentary, we lost the game in Spain. Tonight was just a token performance, too bad that it's the sort of performance that's only been the result of trying to turn around one of many abject displays. And the likes of Gini need to look at themselves and ask why they can only put in that type of performance when it's stacked against us.

Pile of shite that. The team looks broken, they lose heart so easily this season it's pathetic. Our play was so laborious and slow we made them look a decent side which i don't think they are in champions league terms.
We've been debating over the last couple of years who was our most influential player but without the Kop none of them look good.

Because we wanted to press - and Thiago is useless in that (either picks up a yellow within 5 minutes, or tires out, or is useless as he's so slow).

Think we might have to score a few goals though!

I find the lack of investment thing a bit ridiculous when despite it actually being true we still managed to spend 120 odd million on central midfielders who aren't as good or reliable as an ancient James Milner.

Bringing Thiago on took the sting out of our game.

Mane is hopelessly off form. Bobby is too, but he looked like he might put one in tonight. Taking both off for the Oxo-Cube (all credit to DSE) was like waving the white flag.

YEP to all of that!

We've struggled to score goals for months so I had very little hope of that changing tonight.

We've seen that kind of game again and again this season. It's frustrating but we've known for a while now that we're just going to have to wait for this season to end and see what the summer brings.

Firmino can't be relied upon, I've got no idea what's going on with Mane and so it falls to Salah more often than not.

I can't see us embarking on a major overhaul so I just hope we spend enough to buy a few genuine first team contenders and that VVD, Mane and co don't come back broken.

So I guess we spend the next few months reacquainting ourselves with the Europa League ?

I don't think Thiago took the sting out the game, it'd already gone flat about 5 minutes prior to him coming on, he also set up Salah for a great chance towards the end. It's too easy to blame Thiago. He came on and kept the ball moving quickly, the problem was that we compressed the space by leaving 4 forwards on and trying to play everything through the middle. Then we took off two strikers and brought on two more players who tried to play everything through the middle. It was just wrong. We say every week that the subs are wrong, but it's as much down to our lack of variation and quality on the bench, as the actual choice of subs. We need to sell the deadwood and buy some quality. FSG need to pull their fingers out of their arses, but the Thiago blame game is missing the point in a big way.

Too many times we've created chances and not scored, or the defense hasn't been good enough. Not enough times have we looked clinical AND defended well. We defended well as a team tonight, but we lack a killer edge and it's not coming back with Mane and Firmino. And Jota alone isn't enough. We lack balance all over. At the back because of injuries, in midfield because we need to buy (and we miss Hendo) and in attack because two of our strikers are past their best.

Exactly, I think Thiago came on and played well considering the circumstances. Created a few chances despite Madrid parking the bus.
Salah missing that chance in the beginning would have made it a completely different game.
Oh well. Hope we manage to get 4th.

No truer word said by the commentator about AOC, "dashing run, No end product"

Just feel that this is the case running through the whole team at the moment...

Whether.it is down to covid or not the team is fucked

When Casimiro picked up the yellow card in the first half I was hoping that Mane or Frimino would run at him all night and force him into picking up another yellow card. But that never happened. Only a player like Gini,(Often to far away from the coal face) or Keita would make the sort of surges or incursions carrying the ball into their box from midfield to draw a foul.

We need a good look at the squad over the summer, and we need to bring in some real qualitiy player, but just as important some diversity in those players.
Players that can offer something different

Never thought I would be saying this but, If we can get a decent price for Mane, Salah, or both, we should sell and re-invest the money...

Mane looks shot, and the opposition knows how to neutralize the threat of Salah. He is not as effective as he once was. We had some great night out of these players but, while we have Klopp at the Club, a manager that can put a title winning side together lets take advantage of it, and rebuild

I think we are now ready for Klopp 2.0 (cheers @737Max ) I wouldn’t be arsed if we made huge changes this summer looking to get us ruling from 2023 to 2027. Fuck that sounds mad.

Lose Salah, Mané, Firmino, Wijnaldum, Keita and a few other non contributors. Get more dynamic midfield and the next Salah and Mané.

Agree with most of this excpet your 7th point. I would keep him, as £20 mil will not get you much in terms of quality, and instead move both matip and Gomez (The injury twins) on

- For me we played well as we could have, the players gave 100% we just didn't have the final bit of brilliance or luck to be good enough.
- Klopp has to look at his tactics, yes I know we won the league with amazing stats, but sometimes stats can be deceptive. We lack a ball running midfielder who can run in and break up the opposition lines. As we have seen before with this team, when you put up a wall against Liverpool, you can repel them because we are sometimes extremely predictable. Those through balls become predictable. We never really replaced Coutinho and I would like to see us buy someone of that ilk/mould next year so at least we have someone as a threat. Minamino/Shaq/Ox are not a good fit for the midfield dribbler role. Maybe Harvey Elliot can be that guy, or Grealish or that midfielder from Norwich (I forget his name). Regardless this is the glaring hole in Klopps system for me.

Really strange in a way. Kinda proud of the performance considering how shit we've been. Trent was excellent really, Nat could honestly be our #3 center back (him and VVD would be a rock), and if our front 3 could score then we would be in the semis.

Hey ho.

We couldn't get in behind them, they played like a great side and well, if we get top 4 we can probably fix a lot of our issues in pre season if we tune the squad a bit. Get Curtis playing week in week out, get some better bench options, find a suitable FB guy to the tune of Arbeloa, and we can get back up a gear again

They are a decent side. Just like us they had some of their best players missing. Two differences
a) They have quality running though out their squad
b) Their belief in themselves

Yeah said it all. I stopped believing we had a chance when I saw these two getting ready to come on
