Javier Mascherano says he quit Liverpool because of a lack of investment by Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
The Argentinean ace moved to Anfield in February 2007 and made 139 appearances for the Reds before switching to Barcelona in a £18million transfer this summer.
Reds boss Roy Hodgson questioned Mascherano's professionalism for failing to make himself available to play against Manchester City before his move but the 26-year-old insists he had to get out of Anfield because of a lack of investment from the then owners.
He told The Lying Rag: "While Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United were spending big money, Liverpool couldn't because they had no money.
"The situation is clear to me. When you want to fight for big things, titles, you must have a big team to win.
"But, at Liverpool, that wasn't the case.
"That was the main reason we didn't qualify for the Champions League and all players want to test themselves at that level."
Not easyHe added: "It is not easy to leave a team when you have been there almost four years.
"The Liverpool people and fans treated me very well. I cannot say anything against them and they will always be in my heart.
"But, though it was difficult, I knew my time there was over. Finished. I needed to go."
Liverpool have since been taken over by New England Sports Ventures and Mascherano believes the Reds can now push on.
He added: "I try to watch all of Liverpool's games on TV. They have had a tough start but I'm sure they'll get much better.
"There have been a lot of problems with the owners and this has affected things on the pitch.
"Now this has been sorted out, I think things will get better for the team."

Settling inAs for his Barcelona career, Mascherano has made six appearances so far and believes he is settling in well.
He said: "We are fighting for three titles this season and have started fairly well.
"I feel I have settled in OK. After only two months here I already feel at home and the people are treating me very, very well.
"I try to improve every day and adapt to the team - but La Liga is totally different to what I have been used to.
"The Premier League is much more physical but, here, they prefer to play more tactically and technically.
"Coming here is a step forward for me and I am trying to do better."
Mascherano admits he would love to see Fernando Torres join him at Camp Nou but believes it will be hard for the Spanish ace to quit the Kop.
He said: "Torres is so good, he could play for any club. I'd like to see him at Barca but don't know if that would be possible.
"Liverpool's fans love him so much and he loves them so much too that I don't know if they would be able to part."

Personally I thought that from a Liverpool fan's perspective the words were very encouraging.
Torres loves being at Liverpool as much as the fans love him and it would be an enormous wrench for him to leave.
Funny, I thought that he was angling for a move to Man U.

So much for those defending Mascherano and saying that we should consider his family.

He is a fucking liar and is using the lack of investment to dupe everyone once again.

We won't be fooled!

Cool it down there, Roland. It would be best if Masher just let the whole matter drop now BUT rumours about his wife being unhappy were circulating in Liverpool long before he left.

Well, that's his own fault though Jules.

First he plays the lament car about his family, then he denied it and said it was for other reasons.

His new whinging seems to actually confirm that it wasnt about his family.

JJ as you say, they were rumours. Mascherano's behaviour to engineer a move was disgraceful. Now I'm a strong believer in listening to both sides of the story but his comments are bullshit and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

There's probably even less chance of him shagging her now he's with his bum bandit corned beef dwarf mate all day.

Refusing to play and then talking to The Lying Rag to try and gain some understanding from the Liverpool fans.

Get bent, Javier.

It's just as likely he gave the interview to a paper in Spain and the shitrag nicked it and quoted him. Benitez was apparently meticulous in educating new players about not talking to them.

Yeah maybe, it wouldn't be the first time.

Didn't stop one or two jumping on him for it......

I'm not sure why anyone wants to get on his case about talking to that rag though.,even if he probably didnt.

What, he's a Liverpool player and therefore should know better than to talk to them?

The same Liverpool player who turned his back on us and refused to play against Citeh at the 11th hour?

You don't know he didn't speak to them at this point.

Who cares. Jog on Javier.

It just helps me come to terms with the way he engineered his move.
I loved Mascher as a player and his heart on the pitch, I know it might sound a bit melodramatic, but I feel betrayed by all these spoutings in the press.

What was this load of shite about him looking out of his Tower at Insua in his and how isolated he and his family were with few people to speak to.
Now it's about lack of investment, what a load of bollocks Mascher, you knew as well as anyone that was going to get sorted sooner rather than later, the more this pans out the more it whiffs of money in your arse pocket

regards

Not all football players are very intelligent.
Looks like some of them believe that we fans aren't either...

If you left for family reasons that's fair enough, Javier. I could live with that. Why tell some other stories now?

What does he have to explain exactly? He made a career decision, that may or may not actually pan out well for him.

He decided to go for more employers with more of a chance of meeting his ambitions, with the downside of there being far more competition there. People make career decisions like that by the thousands every day. It may not prove a sensible decision.

I presume we all read "matching my ambitions" as willing to pay me as much as I really want. Because if Wayne Rooney has taught us anything, that's it.

And Steven Gerrard.

Everyone could see right through it.

That's the point, so why bother with the 'wifewantstogohome' bullshit.?

It's surprisingly common amongst English footballers.

I think what he's said is fair enough.

I don't appreciate the way he acted about it during the summer but if that's honestly what happened then fair enough.

He wouldve got further props if he came out and blamed his missus and her tower of solitude
