Lucas signs new contract

Yeah, cos the man whose return has had no part in us scoring more goals, is entirely responsible for us being shit for 3 years.

No he's not alone, he's part of the core that hasn't been good enough for years now and I wasn't in favour of giving the others new contracts either.

I don't get the Lucas hate.
Now here's a player who's been treated like dirt by some Liverpool fans to the point of being booed on Anfield, didn't complain, worked hard, performed well, came back from a severe injury and wants to stay in a club that hasn't been in the CL for 3 years.

I don't believe for a second that he's not wanted by other top sides in Europe.

He's not brilliant though, he's a steady player who can occasionally play very well. He's also been quite mediocre regularly. This is what annoys me about your constant sniping at Downing, and you say Lucas has been treated like dirt, yet are happy for Downing to get it in the neck? Smacks of favoritism and a touch of hypocrisy really Modo.

It's different though. Downing was 26 when he joined. £20 million, premiership proven and all. I never wanted him cause I thought he was overrated, suffice to say, he didn't disappoint.
To be honest it took me a while to start liking Lucas and I admire the fact that he despite being booed and ridiculed managed to prove himself.
Then there's Downing, who imo hasn't really proven anything. Compare that to Couthinho who just walked in and pretty much took over. Now that's a winger.

Coutinho's quality, but he's the exception rather than the rule, it's rare anyone picks up a player of that standard for that price and let's be honest, Downing didn't pick the transfer fee, the club did, he's still worked hard and got his head down this season and done reasonably well. Lucas was poor initially, I don't agree with the booing and the stick that many players get, it's counter-productive, Downing got similar treatment last season and struggled, this season he's had the backing of the manager and it's lifted his confidence and people have got off his back. You've backed other mediocre players in the past, the likes of Babel, so it's unfair to then use Coutinho as the stick to beat Downing with, yes he looks a great player but Downing isn't as poor as is made out by some and he's certainly not a slip from the standard we've had in recent years with the likes of Riera, Yossi and a few others, he's just got a massive price tag weighing him down.

He'll go at the end of the season anyway, I just find it a bit rich the double standards some people have, we've got a fair few under performing, mediocre performers in this squad that get afforded far too much slack, while others who aren't household favourites get an unfair wedge of stick.

Makes sense.

Lucas has been fucking awful recently. I understand that players need time to get back to their best after a long spell on the sidelines but is it really too much to ask for the basics to be right in the meanwhile?

I hope we buy a viable alternative in the summer.

He's average and no more. He's been here long enough now and still not really come good enough. Bye.

Forget the injury, he is back to his best. His best was always decidedly mediocre.

I hope there's not a history rewrite on the cards here, i.e., he was brilliant before the injury, and that's what has cost him. He wasn't. He's had 5 or 6 decent games in about 210.

Nice fella tho.

He is one of the main reason we are finding it hard to break into top 4. The day he is pushed to the bench or out of the squad by a better player is when we will actually make it.

It's funny, when we had Mascherano and Alonso I'd have happily sold this kid to Crewe, yet now when mediocrity is the norm around Anfield we have a superstar amidst the banal that is our midfield.

And whilst our increasingly silent owners continue ram the idea of low expectations down our throats, I suppose we should be grateful for what we have.

We're only Liverpool after all.

He was excellent. He's a very good footballer.

He was the in-form midfielder in the league last year prior to a serious injury. He's slowly coming back to that form, so you stick with him.
