Shane Long scored or assisted 34 of Reading's 82 goals (41.4%) in the Championship (inc. playoffs) in 2010/11.

His stats for last season were far less impressive. Also, for the first 8 or 9 games this season he was far from prolific (I think he scored 1 goal in his first 9 games) which actually makes his season total even more impressive.

It's a lot of money to spend on a player who has had 6 good months, having said that, even when he was struggling you could see there was talent there.

wouldn't be the first time we paid loads for a player who had a good 6 months

I'm assuming you're referring to Andy Carroll? Similarly though there was potential visible before he hit the headlines at the start of last season. I'm still uncomfortable with the price tag but Carroll & £15m for Torres makes it sound better.

If we're selling N'Gog then we definitely need another striker and although I'd prefer the cheaper option (Maynard) I think Long would be a significant improvement on N'Gog.

i haven't seen enough of long or maynard to comment on them, but i trust your judgement

btw, you know pratley scored for bolton in a friendly the other day

I think that's his second for them already. He's very similar in style to Gerrard in that he's strong, can tackle, likes to always be involved and likes to get forward although he's never been a prolific midfield goalscorer.

If you discount all the "major" signings this summer i.e. above £10m then I think Pratley for free represents the best signing of the summer. He's a bargain in Fantasy Football too ;-)

According to a poster on YNWA, we've been in contact with Reading twice regarding Long and had a bid of 4 mill rejected.
The posters dad plays golf with Longs dad, so thats a decent source..

Must be a strong fella then. I'd prefer to use a club myself.

Reading striker Shane Long looks set to join West Brom after the two clubs agreed a deal thought to be in the region of £6million. The 24-year-old will sign a four year deal, and earn around £22,000 a week, the Reading Chronicle reports.
