Liverpool rival Hammers in hunt for £10m-rated Irish star

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign Ireland striker Shane Long from Championship side Reading.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to add to his squad for the new season and he reputedly sees Long as a player that will fit snugly between Jay Spearing and David Ngog on the Liverpool bench.

The striker, who scored 25 goals in all competitions last season, is expected to leave the Madejski Stadium this summer, with the Royals willing to cash in 12 months before the end of his existing contract.

West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson had been fronting the chase for the 24-year-old but failed to make a firm offer and the Baggies now look likely to lose out.

West Ham have made two formal bids over the past 48 hours, both of which value the player at approximately £8m with the most recent offer increasing the among of cash they’re willing to pay up front. (See more on West Ham's here and here.)

However, Long would surely be a crazy fool to accept a move to another Championship club if there are other offers from Premier League clubs on the table. (A very rich crazy fool, but a crazy fool nonetheless.)

There was a minor link about two weeks ago I think too, £10m though? We weren't prepared to pay that for Wickham so I don't see us doing it for Long.

Is long better with little risk (developmentally speaking)? I could see us paying it. Wickham still might be shit.

I'm not sure Long is good enough to score regularly in the Premiership, I do like him though.

He's 24, he only has 12 months left on his contract, there are not a queue of clubs desperate to sign him for £10m. I think we should offer £6m and he'd be decent value at that or wait 6 months and sign him for free on a pre-contract which would mean he'd be ours next summer.

He's a good player and he reads the game very well, he's decent in the air and he's not afraid of getting stuck in - he works hard for them team. he'd be a much better option than N'Gog as 4th choice behind Suarez, Carroll and Kuyt but I wouldn't be surprised (if we did sign him) if he started at least 8 or 9 league games.

Edit: The other option is Maynard (Bristol City) who also has 12 months left on his contract and would be available for about £5m. He's also 24 and also worth a risk.

I liked the sound of Rodallega for £9 mill.which was posted on here a day or two back. I liked that very much.

Long's a good player though and *may* be more willing to accept the understudy role. BTW the blueslime are being linked with him (again) this morning.

I like him as well, although I'm not sure Liverpool should be the club to take a punt. He'd be better at Wigan / Fulham etc where he can play regularly, like Zamora.

I agree, I like him as a player and think he deserves a shot at the Premier League and think he could shine given a regular game.

If he's £9m I doubt they can afford them. Rumours are they had N'zogbia at Goodison the other week but they just couldn't afford him

I'd have Hugo. Just for the novelty of having a player called Hugo

From a Blueshite blog (with an agenda it seems):

Reading have rejected a bid for Everton target Shane Long, unfortunately the bid was from West Ham and even their initial offer was probably too high for us to compete with.

Earlier this month we reported how it looked like David Moyes had sounded out Reading over the availability of striker Shane Long.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international scored 28 goals in 60 appearances for club and country last season and is one of the hottest commodities in the Championship this summer.

Ourselves, Newcastle, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion have all been linked at some stage over the past couple of months and Reading have already conceded defeat in their attempts to keep hold of him.

'If a Premier League club comes in and we feel it is the right offer there`s nothing we can do.' Reading manager Brian McDermott said to the Mail a few weeks back.

But while West Ham have had to deal with the financial hit of being relegated from the Premier League and are now rivals with Reading in the Championship, it would seem they still have more cash to throw around than us because the latest bid for Long comes from them according to The Times newspaper.

They have reported that an offer of about £5million rising to £8million has been rejected and West Ham have already made an improved bid.

Reading could have course be unwilling to sell to a rival in the same division, but even so that is simply cash we appear to not have available.

The failed sales of Yobo and Yakubu have really hit us this summer, we all knew that we had to sell before we could buy and if we'd been able to cash in on them then perhaps we could have at least made an attempt at signing this promising striker, it would have still been a long shot (pardon the pun), but at least we could have been in the race.

Instead we are being linked with free transfer moves for the likes of James McFadden, who lets face, doesn't exactly give you the urge to go out and buy the shirt with his squad name and number on the back.

It's of little wonder that the national newspapers in the UK are picking up on an apparent 'crisis' at Goodison Park. The latest of which is the Daily Mail (click here to read their article) who have attempted to report the debate from various angles.

Although I doubt things are anywhere near that bad at Everton, 25-1 for them to go down next season is looking tempting.....

Yeah, I've never really considered them bad enough to go down, this could be their year though, especially if they lose Fellaini. That said, they still manage to somehow play decent football and give the tops sides a game, so who knows?

Vlad will obv.have some of those odds. ;D

I'm holding on to my money for the moment, but I'll be down the bookies quicker than a rat up a drainpipe if Moyes leaves.

If they lost Moyes that price would tumble.

Well there are always a lot of teams worse than them. As you say they are still pretty effective and consistently finish in the top half of the table. Its very rare for a club to fall that far so quickly.

If they lose a few players and certainly the manager though then who knows?

James McFadden. It's not a joke either

They're probably trying to convince Alan Stubbs to make a comeback aswell
