Not much to report on the transfer rumour grapevine today so instead of a News from the Web thread we have an Updates on Remy thread since that seems to be the only 'new' news.

Loic Remy is desperate to join Liverpool according to his agent who suggests he is just the type of player needed at Anfield. The Reds are reported to have made a bid to Nice and even said to have agreed a payment structure. Acceptable prices are rumoured to be anything between £8.4 million and £12.5 million. West Ham United are said to have made an offer acceptable to the French club but have not been able to woo the player.

"Liverpool are passing up a huge opportunity if they decide not to go with Remy," Fredric Guerra said. "Nothing has been settled yet but I know that Liverpool are having a meeting about transfers and we expect something this week. "The boy is pure gold and I am not saying that because I am his agent. He has great pace and that is something Liverpool need in attack. Their first Europa League game is on July 29 and you have to ask yourself that if Fernando Torres does not play, whom do they have in attack?"

He added: "Remy will get goals in England, that is certain. Potentially, he is a better, stronger player than Nicolas Anelka or Thierry Henry. "He is ideally suited for the English game and while he is determined to go to the Premier League, his heart is set on playing for Liverpool."

Was stated in the transfer thread that we can't afford to pay what West Ham are offering; but are willing instead to offer cash+El Zhar+Plessis.

That would be an excellent deal for us.

Fucking hell, it's a pity Ms Guerra could not have had a word with Sr Benitez sometime over the last couple of years, he is bang on there.

I think we are in a strong position with this one, if Remy holds his nerve we should get him for less than West Ham, and indeed on that basis they might jump at a deal including players.

I wonder if Mr Remy is a replacement for rather than a backup to Fernando in the event he chooses to leave.
Perhaps we are just keeping our options open?

We don't need to pay what West Ham are willing to pay if Remy is not interested in moving to West Ham - and it certaily sounds like he has no interest in them. Nice may be displeased at not getting 13M or whatever WH have offered but if we have made what was initially an acceptable offer to them (9 or 10M say) and Remy now puts his foot down, for him it's Liverpool or nowhere (which sounds very much the case) then the ball is in Nice's court - accept it and Remy comes to LFC or refuse it and Remy stays at Nice.

We've been on the other side of the fence in cases like this in the none too distant past.

From what I have read, it seems like the Nice management seems to want to sell Remy to us too. Or has it always been his agent who has been encouraging us to make bids?

I think Nice were happy with whatever the original offers were but are now looking at a fee well in excess of expectations - which maybe should worry us. It seems his agent knows he wants to come to Anfield and hence the reason he has been making all these statements and giving us an elbow in the ribs whenever we look like nodding off.

His agent is an absolute twat. All this "better player than Anelka, the new Henry" bullshit.

Quick Hodgson, buy him. His agent says he's going to be the best player ever. Twat.

I wonder if it's also a negotiation tatic with West Ham.

"My client really wants to go Liverpool, but if you offer him attractive enough terms he'll be willing to move to you."

take a chance, 'ONE' of these 'better than henry' youngsters has to be the real deal.
It just smacks of a crap agent trying way too hard to sell his client.

If a player really was "the new Henry/Anelka" etc (with stats/performances to back it up), his agent would be batting off a host of interested clubs form Europe's top table.

to be fair, what we're drogba's stats in france? what about ronaldinho?
Drogba is the exception. Anyone else described as a pacy striker should have made their own name by age 23.

Both were already putting in big performances and were creating a buzz long before their big moves.

Had any of us (bar Bunny) heard of Remy 10 days ago?

from skysport Transfer Clockwatch

10:55 Football Editor: A little bit more on Loic Remy and reports suggest the Nice striker would prefer a move to Arsenal as they are the Premier League club he supports

Other clubs may have had success with strikers from the French league, but when we have signed them in the past they have never been 100% successful. I am thinking of Titi Camara, Sinama Pongolle, Cissé and N'Gog.

In the commentary to the Grasshoppers game last night, Roy Evans said that we could do with a forward who was capable of holding up the ball, which I think is a fair point.

I've never seen him. Agree with Buddha, though, that his agent is sounding a bit *too* desperate to sell him to us. I wouldn't buy a used car off that bloke, never mind a £12m footballer.

Hahaha. "Desperate" for a move to Liverpool. Anywhere more like..
Well to be fair there are no direct quotes from Remy or his agent on any Arsenal preference whilst there are plenty of DIRECT quotes on his preference for Liverpool.

oooh now you've done it - cue a burst on the Huntelaar thread for another 5 pages.

i think anyone who watches any French football has heard of Remy...

He isnt Aguero, Dzeko or Higuain - And thats the exact reason we are linked to him. We simply cannot afford those players.
If we are looking at the likes of Remy then it can only be a good sign that Torres is likely to stay... If Torres was going to leave we would be linked to far more expensive prospects.

The plot thickens..........

seem pretty direct to me but at the same time who cares? arsenal won't be making a move for him so if we wanted to make a move for him we could make him ours just like both kuyt & babel who showed their love for Arsenal but became our players.
