That's the team I want. We've struggled to break teams the last few times we've started with Benteke. I'd much rather he came off the bench.

Just a comment on why I went with Benteke in my selection and not Firmino.

Firstly Benteke was rested versus Sion and that against a tall WBA he will offer a serious heading threat in the box - something that will be totally absent without him. We can expect to spend a considerable amount of time there against a defensive and unambitious WBA whose main threat will not come from breaks but from set-pieces. Another reason for having Benteke on for when we have to defend those set-pieces.

Secondly, although I like Firmino, there has to be some reaction to his recent poor displays. Dropping him to the bench may give him a wake-up call. In addition to the fact that I doubt Coutinho-Firmino-Lallana is the right front-line for WBA.

So do I. Of all the teams in the Prem they probably pose the most physical challenge, especially those animals Yacob and Olsson if they're playing.

I've never understood the idea that one should try and match a physical side to beat them. That's just playing to their strength.

The much better way is to play quick, intelligent players, who can outfox their lumbering brutes in defence.

Yep. We've seen just recently how well that works against 10 men behind the ball teams.

Huh? Didn't we play Benteke in both the games we lost (Newcastle and Palace)?
I was referring to the 2015/16 season when I said 'recently' though of course you are right with regard to those two. However it doesn't dissipate the point. We have failed miserably when trying to play our way through teams with little dinks and flicks (of which Coutinho is often one of the worst). We need to have some aerial threat.

I really don't agree. Our best run last season came in that 10-12 run game when Rodgers went 3 at the back, and went with that front 3 of Coutinho-Sterling-Lallana.

Coutinho-Firmino-Lallana is similar, and the best we have in the absence of Sturridge. Also think Benteke is more effective when he has 30 minutes to batter already tired defenders.

Any striker will find it easier against tired defenders, but playing Benteke against their cloggers from the start will (a) help to tire the latter out and (b) take the heat off the quicker players to whom you referred above. In any case, last season was last season, and assuming things will continue in the same vein - especially when they haven't so far, as per Froggy's most recent post above - seems a dubious approach.

Don't let them drag us to their level. Lallana, Coutinho and firmino for me until sixty, then drag firmino off for Benteke if we're not killing the game by then.
Won't be easy at all this one as they're really used to being compact and solid, which we don't fare well against, especially at home.
Can't see us losing it, but a win is gonna be tricky unless we sneak an early one.

The bolded bit is very true, for the moment anyway, so what's the point in playing our usual game against them?

You could just say "ditto."

When playing tall physical teams, I think generally it's better to match them in midfield (or you will be outfought and overran), but in attack it's better to give them something they are not comfortable dealing with - quick, interchanging attackers.

So, our main rivals dropping points and we have the chance of capitalising in what should be a winnable game. This sounds far too familiar, we better not fuck it up yet again. Klopp really needs to address this mental block our shithouse squad has.

Agree with you. Need to really win tomorrow to keep the pace with City as well. They should be dropping points in their game with Arsenal next wkend

I'm nervous. West Brom and Tony Pulis...yuck. Please fucking win Reds.

don't worry - this time we will and I think the players will be really up for it. No false expectations they will really be pumped up for it.

Sometimes yes, but not invariably. Lately we've been getting no joy against those sides by playing that kind of football at home, in addition to which WBA are the nastiest bunch of hackers in the Prem. We need to tailor our approach to individual circumstances, not simply assume that "one size fits all".
